Deletions due to being discussed elsewhere

Hi

I was wondering if this is going to be the case for all posts now? Can they be deleted just because they’re discussed elsewhere?

It’s a public forum of course all posts might be discussed elsewhere, that’s the risk you take when you post online.

Why doesn’t this happen when people’s threads end up on Facebook/twitter pages dedicated to slating MN users? Not to mention the scummy journos who lift entire threads on here but MNHQ are happy to keep them?

I thought you didn’t delete threads unless against guidelines etc? Is this going to be a new guideline? Must not be discussed on certain forums?

Rufus, not only can you up and down vote, but if lots of people downvote someone their posts disappear.

Reddit is really easy to manipulate. Click on the name of a person you don't like. All their posts come up as a list (useful for trollspotting too) Click the minus sign beside every post (takes 30 seconds). Repeat with each of your five different names, get your friend and her three different names to do the same, and bingo, all dissent disappears. Which rather makes a mockery of the claims of "freedom of speech, nothing is deleted here" Grin

For those who think the site was set up for spotting trolls, remember they are happy to have the person with the (at least) five different accounts as one of their most prolific members. It's a bit pathetic. At least on mn regular well-known posters who were also long-term trolls had to put a bit of time and effort in.

Those of you complaining about cliques on MN & Reddit sub - I wish you were here before the Moldies scandal.

Now that was one cliquey place. The minute you got into a debate with one of them on a thread, they would PM (call?) each other and ALL of them would descend on you like a pack of vultures.

"Click the minus sign beside every post (takes 30 seconds). Repeat with each of your five different names, get your friend and her three different names to do the same, and bingo, all dissent disappears."

Nice story. Not true, though.

The only posts that go under -5 or so are the truly unpopular ones, and there are very few of those.

""wider audience" Lorna mentioned meant more places rather than specifically greater numbers."

Do we really need to go into the definition of "wider audience"?

Of course it means larger numbers of eyeballs on the thread.

I agree with you that discussing an MN thread doesn't mean a wider audience, since the same people are on here as well. Which I already said in reply to Lorna.

Does this mean that threads discussed in the press will be automatically deleted from now on?

Report
paxillin · 15/11/2017 23:41

No, Bloomed, doesn't sound like it does. Plus Daily Wail in particular just sticks all the posts onto their webpage, they don't need the thread to keep it running.

Bloomed from what I have seen recently anyone who is concerned/upset about their privacy for whatever reason can contact HQ and ask them to take the thread down and they usually do.

TBH I really don't have a problem with that.

paxillin · 15/11/2017 23:45

But they don't disappear. They are hidden, you can unhide them. So there is a way to know how many are hidden, display and count.

Bloomed · 15/11/2017 23:47

Interesting paxillin. I guess the Wail brings traffic.

Cote, do you post there? If so (a) why on earth would you want to be associated with that lot and (b) anyone who disagrees with the most prolific poster (and all her names) disappears. Have you not noticed? How odd.

I'd forgotten about downvoting meaning having to wait to post which is yet another way to "silence" dissent - again not quite as free-speech inclusive as is claimed.

You seem to be misreading Lorna's explanation as well. Is that deliberate? She explained what she meant by "wider audience" - are you calling her a liar?

Downvoted to oblivion on a sub called Trolls for disagreeing with an actual troll Dixie?

That's fabulous. :o

You can make them reappear with one button Dix. Reddit is quite hard to learn at first.

Maybe I am you, Farse. I’m sure I’m not LaQueen, though. So maybe I’m not you after all.

Cote - what makes you think posters here weren’t around before Moldies? Smile I can spot at least 4 in this thread who were, and that’s without trying too hard Smile

It would, of course, be easy to ensure a post got to -5 if you had 5 different usernames/accounts on the go (although if it truly is 1 per device, due to inability to log in/log out, then that’s a lot of devices to be juggling Grin)

I never thought I'd say this, but there are worse things than having your thread picked up by the mail. At least the DM actually quote from the thread. They are cunts, but they cut and paste accurately.

Other places, they just make up shite. Along the lines of "Did you see X admit that she beats her children every night and lock them in a broom cupboard. I remember (never admit to AS) she's a police officer, I'm going to contact her station and tell them. Of course, I can't prove this, the thread was 7 years ago and in chat, so it's gone now, but I have the memory of an elephant I wasn't frantically ASing just now so my word is fact" and I'll upvote it with all my other accounts so you'll believe me.

So teenage. So last year.

Apologies to sensible teenagers Grin

No, no, Farse. Cote explained that (although sadly without pictures Smile)

The wider audience thing simply must have meant more numbers, despite the redditors either all being MNers themselves, or reading MN anyway. It wasn’t just the fact it was shared elsewhere, it was that there were more people, who are actually the same people, reading it. See?

(And apart from the more-people-who-are-the-same-people bit, Lorna did also clarify that actually it was privacy concerns which led to the deletion, rather than numbers, umm wider audiences, oh whatever)

It takes less than five seconds to switch between accounts.

If you have lots it's probably easy to forget to switch when you are deep into trolling which is what happened yesterday.

Of course the posts can be unhidden but if (as they insist) the raison d'être of the site is free speech, everyone is welcome, no deletions etc, why are they hidden in the first place (especially by the multiple account posters).

Downvoting doesn't just hide posts, it makes it impossible for posters to debate. If someone with five (or more) accounts want to argue with someone with one account, they simply downvote them so they can't post for a while. That way the first poster can post multiple times, upvote themselves and make the argument appear skewed.
