Mumsnet Live Event - What would you like to see?

RachelMumsnet · 06/06/2017 15:21

We're looking at hosting a Mumsnet Live event in 2018 (at Birmingham NEC) and we'd love to hear about what you'd like to see (or rather not see).

The idea is to transport Mumsnet from the world-wide web to RL.Whether you decide to bring the kids for a family day-out or come alone for much-needed relaxation and inspiration (and hook up with other Mumsnetters), there will be something for the whole family, including:

  • Talks and panel discussions with inspiring speakers; from authors and bloggers and food writers to parenting experts and psychologists and thought leaders.

  • health and fitness workshops and masterclasses

  • Style and beauty demos plus opportunities to talk to experts

  • Food tasting and cookery demonstrations

  • Entertainment for you and your children through music, dance, and art

Let us know what YOU would like to see at Mumsnet Live by 10am Friday 16 June. Everyone who joins the discussion will be entered into a draw to win £100 voucher for Love2Shop.

Knotty and Pistey with a lovely woolly hug grotto.

Police style line up's to Guess the MN'ter

Fun speakers, authors, workshops....

CMOTDibbler · 07/06/2017 10:50

I'd love to that -esp as I can actually go to the NEC!

An Exercise area - This Girl Can, Breeze, sportswear sellers like Threo, Fat Lad at the Back and others who make sportswear that fits women of all shapes and sizes. Have a go sports. Sports bra fitting and demos

S&B with bra fitting and demos of how to fit. 'Tell the buyers' where we can show people what over 40's/50's want

Talks from people like Margaret Attwood

I like the idea of zones - I really don't want to go near pregnancy and babies, but would be very willing to give some volunteering time in Elderly Parents or a Careers zone to talk about what I do to kids

tectonicplates · 07/06/2017 10:57

A Boden clothing stall. Grin

AdaColeman · 07/06/2017 11:34

A Christmas Grotto stall would be extremely popular.

Lots of glittery stuff to buy, Elf on a Shelf, make your own crackers workshop, tastes of humbug vodka, best mince pie competition, how to decorate a naice Christmas cake master class, how to do a buffet.....

Highalert · 07/06/2017 12:01

A police officer who can log everything that goes on.

TheImprobableGirl · 07/06/2017 14:17

I think a little Christmas meet up section would be good, although I don't know if I'd be brave enough to out myself, I second the woolly hugs section with a space to donate or to see them- and sparklingbrook I will hoist you onto the train on my way to b'ham (I believe your town is the next one to mine on the way Grin )

I hope it goes well! A mumsnet scarf buying section could be good Wink

InigoTaran · 07/06/2017 14:53

Meet ups with pp in your local area would be good!

TiggyMP · 07/06/2017 17:31

Just trying to think what I could give a talk on...

...hmmm...

TiggyMP · 07/06/2017 17:35

Ooh! How about a zombie preparedness expert?!

They could tell us about the correct way to smash their brains out, emergency zombie survival kit, best member of family to sacrifice if needed, how to deal with slow lurchers and the modern fast swarmers, etc.

Crochita · 07/06/2017 18:19

First aid area with demonstrations, talks, leaflets and encouraging people to take courses.

Crochita · 07/06/2017 18:37

I could come and d some crochet demo's!

For a large fee! 😂

BishopBrennansArse · 07/06/2017 21:02

Stocks where you can pelt a troll with rotten fruit and veg.

paxillin · 07/06/2017 21:22

Wine, naturally.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/06/2017 21:42

A cat section for the litter tray community!

SorrelForbes · 07/06/2017 21:46

Bra fitting (maybe some Bravissimo fitters in attendance?)

Fostering and adoption agency reps

Style gurus (colour, style, shape advice)

Merrylegs · 07/06/2017 21:59

loling at the police officer.

Gender neutral loos.......

TiggyMP · 07/06/2017 22:05

I assume at least half the gents will be switched to ladies.

Thinking back to the last time I went there, how about somewhere to sit and eat food? The eateries couldn't cope at peak time last time I went.

Bacere · 07/06/2017 22:06

Friendship bench!

Bra fitting for sure.

Swap shop for all those books you can't bear to part with but must or all those free samples Grin or paint tester pots etc.

Sparklingbrook · 07/06/2017 22:07

This Morning did a Live event at the NEC recently. What will make the MN one any different from that?

CMOTDibbler · 07/06/2017 22:19

And could we have donation points for stuff for Woolly Hugs, and maybe a collection for Womens Aid - so you could drop off childrens clothes, nappies, toiletries, sanpro, and whatever else they ask for.

Drop in learn to knit or crochet a square for WH

Camping stuff Smile

I'd def want a focus on it being an event for women, rather than mothers iyswim. Though there would have to be things to entertain the cherubs. Maybe getting Islabikes in to run childrens cycling stuff, Jump mag for sessions on great women you've never heard of

Flumplet · 07/06/2017 22:46

Tom hardy doing a naked interactive pottery demonstration.

Offers and freebies - bags of them!! Stalls selling Baby and kids stuff at a discount!

Live topical discussion, ask the expert kind of thing, workshops and tutorials, style and beauty zone.

Sign me up I can't wait!!!

FlyingFordAnglia · 08/06/2017 00:59

Tom hardy reading stories in a corner somewhere... for the kids obviously.
Beauty workshops, make up tutorials where you're not badgered into buying a million products after.
Crochet/woolly hugs demo of basic things to help people get started.

erinaceus · 08/06/2017 01:20

Space to have a conversation about feminism.

"Let toys be toys" should have a presence.

Aibu live debates! Shock This sounds...lively. Would hard hats be provided?

A space for MNers to showcase their talents. I remember one MNer writing that she had taken up slacklining for example which I thought was amazing. There must be all sorts of talents on here. "MNetters got Talent", anyone?

erinaceus · 08/06/2017 01:25

How about a stand for issues like DV and relationship stuff?

This is an important suggestion.

I was thinking, along similar lines, of a supportive space for people who are struggling with their mental health, maybe by involving one of the charities such as Mind or The Samaritans who could also fundraise at the same time. It is good to have a chill-out space at events like this in any case, because they can get overwhelming for those of us who get overwhelmed relatively easily.

A chill-out space involving lots of art and craft materials and those mindfulness colouring pictures?

Firefries · 08/06/2017 05:32

A panel for the mumsnet HQ team so we can ask, whatever happened to? Where'd that story go? etc
