Mumsnet Live Event - What would you like to see?

RachelMumsnet · 06/06/2017 15:21

We're looking at hosting a Mumsnet Live event in 2018 (at Birmingham NEC) and we'd love to hear about what you'd like to see (or rather not see).

The idea is to transport Mumsnet from the world-wide web to RL.Whether you decide to bring the kids for a family day-out or come alone for much-needed relaxation and inspiration (and hook up with other Mumsnetters), there will be something for the whole family, including:

  • Talks and panel discussions with inspiring speakers; from authors and bloggers and food writers to parenting experts and psychologists and thought leaders.

  • health and fitness workshops and masterclasses

  • Style and beauty demos plus opportunities to talk to experts

  • Food tasting and cookery demonstrations

  • Entertainment for you and your children through music, dance, and art

Let us know what YOU would like to see at Mumsnet Live by 10am Friday 16 June. Everyone who joins the discussion will be entered into a draw to win £100 voucher for Love2Shop.

Giant bean bag nap area.

I would kill for a giant comfy nap area, would even visit just to have a nap in said area. Of course the rest of the family would be left at home so I could take full advantage.

Can we set up the stocks for some of the rotters that spout crap in the media?

AdaColeman · 06/06/2017 22:42

Quiet room for those with special needs to escape to if needed, events at the nec are always so busy and full. And maybe some stalls or talks about disabilities.

An Antiques Roadshow type of stall, maybe run by an auction house.
Threads about old items are always popular on MN.

PS I was only joking about Brian from Hull.

Gin tasting and pin the pants on (a nakid) Tom Hardy.

I'd like to see clothes stalls and catwalk shows, but ones that are representative of all types of women (e.g. plus size and all ages). Also jewellery and beauty/hair product stalls and maybe someone doing manicures.

I'd also like to see some talks and Q&As with well known experts (e.g. Simon Calder for travel and Martin Lewis for money). Psychologists and 'thought leaders' don't appeal to me personally. I'd like more practical talks.

Lots of food stalls offering samples would be good. And some takeaway stalls selling tasty food (e.g. pizza/burgers).

aliceinwanderland · 07/06/2017 00:22

I appreciate it's not what you're asking but a rl mumsnet event doesn't appeal at all. I like to keep my virtual world and rl world quite separate!

mogloveseggs · 07/06/2017 00:30

I imagine the Aibu section to be like the duel from gladiators with the giant cotton buds Grin

AdaColeman · 07/06/2017 01:10

The post about removing spiders has got me thinking...
Maybe a zoo would bring along spiders and snakes and do a sort of "how to overcome the fear" talk.

Or along similar lines "the fear of holes" so that it wouldn't frighten you to chop up liver or fill cannelloni tubes.

OlennasWimple · 07/06/2017 01:13

Yy to Dr Pimple Popper!!

You could do them and us a favour by getting the fashion buyers for M&S in to hear first hand what we really want from them (especially if any of them are willing to come wearing That Pink Dress)

Internet security and safety talks

Jenni Murray, Mary Beard, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Mariella Frostrup

ohfourfoxache · 07/06/2017 01:49

Women's aid

Baby sling demonstrations

Mexican estate/time share agents*

Demonstrations showing how to bake the perfect lemon drizzle cake*

  • may or may not be serious Grin
ohfourfoxache · 07/06/2017 01:51

Oh! Children's nutritional experts, particularly geared toward those of us with fussy little sods eaters

OlennasWimple · 07/06/2017 02:18

Could that MNer bring the Victorian safe and have a grand opening so we can find out what was inside?

Alakazam7 · 07/06/2017 06:16

A representative from Fostering/Adoption to recruit potential carers.
Aibu live debates!
Chance to meet the team behind mumsnet
Lots of Free samples to try before you buy- love these at these sort of events
A gransnet area?

SillyMoomin · 07/06/2017 08:00

A row of trestle tables filled with lemon drizzle cakes for punching Smile

Merrylegs · 07/06/2017 08:50

'The idea is to transport Mumsnet from the world-wide web to RL'

Nope.

Merrylegs · 07/06/2017 08:55

(I think if you invite properly good/famous speakers then people might come under pretext of seeing them: eg 'oh no, I don't MN but I really want to see Germaine Greer' (or what-have-you.)

Sparklingbrook · 07/06/2017 09:01

Imagine all the newbies registering as a result.

Faithless12 · 07/06/2017 09:22

A book corner or something for both recommendations for adult reading and children's reading.
Educational specialists, how to know where your child should be, and recognise if they are truely g and t and how to ensure they get the education they need.

I'd like to see an emphasis on digital literacy. So parents can learn about the ways of keeping their children safe, the latest apps and how they are used. I'd be happy to help on the digital literacy side of things.

Faithless12 · 07/06/2017 09:25

Digital badges, with the show guide and where to find things. Aiming high on that one.
