Hello, hello,
Tech's feeling very brave and has said we can start playing with the new toy he's built us - Mumsnet local . The idea is that it's going to be a guide to all the best stuff for parents and kids in the UK, broken down by geographic area.

It is still very much in it's infancy and so we are not going to add navigation to it from the menu bars for a wee while whilst we (ie you pretty please!) refine and improve it. So please, please take a look and fill it up with lots of great listings because obviously it's not going to be much cop until it's got something in it, and right now it's a bit sad with only a couple of north london hotspots added .

By way of added incentive anyone who adds a listing will be entered into our competition to win a trip to fairy school

So please do take a look, add as much as you can and let us know of any problems/ suggested improvements.

Many cheers,
Mumsnet Towers

How about a section on where to find nice kids clothes and/or shoes? Also where you can sell your old stuff?

carriemumsnet · 15/03/2007 20:42

Bumpety bump... loads of great listings so far, but surely there must be more places you can recommend... go on give it a go and keep the feedback coming.

Thanks

treacletart · 15/03/2007 22:42

How about adding "Cafes" "Bars" and "Clubs" to Pubs and Restaurants and perhaps splitting the eateries into best for families and best for visiting without kids?

dibblesquibble · 16/03/2007 13:41

Hello - am really getting into this, it's great! I added a listing yesterday and happended to revisit the actual place this morning - I've got something slightly wrong in the description - how do I amend that, please? Thank you!

AbbyMumsnet · 16/03/2007 17:20

Bump bump bump

treacletart · 16/03/2007 18:50

I used an ampersand in the title of one of my listings, but it reads on the map alt tag as "&"

serenity · 16/03/2007 19:35

Hope I'm not repeating another post, but it's a bit annoying that if you search a particular area, but then move manually around the map, you can't see any tags from another area. Example being, I searched 'London', had a quick look and then moved down to look at Kent/Surrey (which are easier to get to than North London for me) and there was nothing there!

some suggestions for new categories:
cafes
take-away/delivery food
pottery painting
language classes
cinemas - ie, that offer parent/child sessions

what if somewhere covers more than one category? ie, there is a theatre in North Finchley which also has a cafe, various classes for children - dance, messy play etc, they do special events in school holidays... Is it possible for places to be listed under more than one category?

also agree that restaurants needs to be broken down into child-friendly and "special occasion"

Ooh, I'm sure I can think of more!! I'll be back...

TwinklemEGGan · 23/03/2007 23:50

Are you charging for advertising under Tradespeople?

JustineMumsnet · 24/03/2007 00:22

no - do you think we should?

Yes

2Happy · 24/03/2007 09:33

(Sorry this thread is too long to read all of it so apologies if I'm repeating what someone else has said!)

For rural areas, it may be helpful to be able to put a county/region in rather than a place or postcode. Where I live, there might be one attraction in one town, and one in another 20miles away, and certinly nothing for my postcode! It's a PITA to have to put each town in separately, plus you might miss certain attractions that are in the middle of nowhere (such as farms that children can visit). I'm not sure I'm explaining myself too well...

TwinklemEGGan · 24/03/2007 21:25

Justine - I was hoping you wouldn't!

I agree with Happy2 about rural areas.

maverick · 29/03/2007 16:11

Would it be possible to have 'Tutoring' as a separate heading -perhaps under 'Professional Help', please? I put my recommendation under 'Academic' but that quite 'touch the spot' :-)

ucm · 29/03/2007 16:32

What a fab idea. I have added.

ucm · 29/03/2007 16:40

How would you be able to charge for recommending a tradesperson? If you are recommending someone, then you would have to ask the person you are recommending to pay IYKWIM.

Have added 3 listings. Why doesn't the website address show in the listing? Also, you need to alow the original poster to correct the Title - I forgot to put the name of the restaurant!

cremeggafoam · 06/04/2007 13:11

we need a mumsnet local button at the top of the page.had a bit of a job finding it

Tech · 06/04/2007 19:15

cremeggafoam · 07/04/2007 12:02

thanks tecn.
not sure if i actually like being called creme egg!!!tee hee

FlyingSaucer · 07/04/2007 17:56

This may be a London-only problem, but looking at the list for SW6 (Fulham) it is showing up activities in locations as far away as Battersea SW11, Wandsworth SW18, South Ken SW7 and beyond. I know these areas are not very far away, but in areas with a high population density (and an even higher Mums and babies density) these are not very "local". It may be that as more locations are added, it will give the ones within SW6 first and then more distant activities by distance, but if not, this would be a good idea IMHO.

shonaspurtle · 10/04/2007 12:27

I've just added a listing but because I only put the first part of the postcode it's pinpointed in the wrong place on the Google map.

I went to look up the proper postcode but there's no facility for me to change it in the listing.

Just looks a bit odd since the map and the address don't correspond.
