Hello, hello,
Tech's feeling very brave and has said we can start playing with the new toy he's built us - Mumsnet local . The idea is that it's going to be a guide to all the best stuff for parents and kids in the UK, broken down by geographic area.

It is still very much in it's infancy and so we are not going to add navigation to it from the menu bars for a wee while whilst we (ie you pretty please!) refine and improve it. So please, please take a look and fill it up with lots of great listings because obviously it's not going to be much cop until it's got something in it, and right now it's a bit sad with only a couple of north london hotspots added .

By way of added incentive anyone who adds a listing will be entered into our competition to win a trip to fairy school

So please do take a look, add as much as you can and let us know of any problems/ suggested improvements.

Many cheers,
Mumsnet Towers

Soupy, yes, you're right, you should probably be able to change categories on edit basics. I'll have a look at that

Littlelapin, the idea was to be all collaborative and modern, but yes, there is a danger currently that someone could vandalize listings. One thing we've thought of is to version the listings so that if someone does vandalize, another member can just revert it to a prior version at one click. We'll discuss that internally and get back to you all on it.

The idea of allowing anyone to edit was....

I have a two year old who loves a particular soft play area.
My two year old grows up and I forget all about that play area.
Someone later has a two year old and realises class times / costs have changed and listing is no longer accurate. That person can correct it. If we don't allow some form of editng, things will get stale quite quickly.

I'd be interested to hear what people think the best solution would be.

Cheers,
Tech

Hi ejt1764, what sort of place was it? We've stripped out most of the "non-geographic" postcodes on which the Royal Mail doesn't supply location information. My thinking was there wouldn't be anywhere that wasn't "somehwere". What was the postcode? Email me if you'd rather not post it here. The other possibility is that it's not on the Royal Mail postcode list we have. I'd like to check.

Thanks,
Tech

Iota · 09/03/2007 17:43

hmmm having a problem finding
Giraffe
39 - 41 Silbury Arcade Centre
Milton Keynes
MK9 3AG

which I thought I'd just added

and if you search on milton keynes it brings up very long list of streets with the streetname followed by milton keynes

sophiewd · 09/03/2007 17:57

Right now I appear to be completely boggin this up - after managing so easily first time.

Tech any idea where my entry for Gambado has gone?

!Gambado! Milton Keynes
Roebuck Way (off the V4)
Knowlhill
Milton Keynes
MK5 8HT

BTW I think I forgot to put a postcode in the
postcode box for Giraffe MK

Also I seem to have failed to make map markers for Giraffe and Gambado

sorry - hope you can sort it out, thanks

cleaninglady · 09/03/2007 18:20

Tech - have added a family friendly farm near myself - a category for farms might be handy ???

Re the edit/update problem (16.21 post) would it not be easier to just add additional lines with the date the information included so people can look at the latest entry rather than edit the original information and then "Tech" doing a clean up on it every now and again and deleting anything prior to 6 months ago for example:

Original info: open 2-4 cost £3.00

Additional info: Dec 2006: open 3-5 cost £3.50

etc, etc...
Just a thought good luck though its excellent!!

Twiglett · 09/03/2007 18:28

the concept of winning that prize is totally putting me off doing anything on it ..can we opt out?

Hulababy · 09/03/2007 18:31

Someone has already added the Spa!

Aloha · 09/03/2007 18:45

Can we have a category for cafes rather than just restaurants and pubs? Have just put a cafe in that category and feel it doesn't quite fit.

Breastfeeding support is a good idea too.

DrMarthaMcMoo · 09/03/2007 18:47

I'm not putting anything til the competition's over

Tech · 09/03/2007 18:47

Hi, Iota,
The problem with "Gambado" is that our system doesn't think that MK5 8HT exists. Now, what it should have done is fallen back on "MK5 8" to put it in the approximately same place, but instead it blew up. We've patched it now so you should be able to add them. Sorry your effort was wasted. If you try again now it should work.

Regards,
Tech

boredwithlife · 09/03/2007 18:48

What about a 'schools' category?

Twiglett · 09/03/2007 18:51

can you put a shops category in please tech

I want to add our fabulous sweete shoppe .. a la charlie and the chocolate factory

Kif · 09/03/2007 18:51

tech - I'm limbering up to work hard on you behalf - but can you make all the fields bigger pls? if i copy and paste things like admissions prices or addresses that may go over several lines, copy and paste only picks up first line iyswim.

Twiglett · 09/03/2007 18:53

oh and when you look at listings on the map and hold your cursor over them it is turning apostrophes into a code (hash39;) so you might want to tweak that too

Lilliput · 09/03/2007 19:11

I still don't see where you link to Mumsnet local anywhere on the sight other than on this thread. Where is the button?

Kif · 09/03/2007 19:11

lilli - it's not on the site cos they've not got many listings yet

saltire · 09/03/2007 19:12

I added one of my fave restaurants in St Andrews, and miraculously it has appeared on the mumsnet local. i am astounded as I usually manage to get these things wrong

Iota · 09/03/2007 19:15

I second Kif's comment of 18.51

Lilliput · 09/03/2007 19:17

Oh right, sorry.
I will add as many as I can think of.

Tech · 09/03/2007 19:17

Cleaninglady, that sounds like a potential plan. We are sort of figuring things out as we go along, so we could give that a try.

Cheers,
Tech

filthymindedvixen · 09/03/2007 19:18
