Why is MN so slow?

I'm not moaning - honest!

But Mumsnet s very slow - all the time. There's definitely nothing wrong with my internet, I have 200MB download and all other sites are fine.

I just wonder why this is? Are you throttled?

Catzpyjamas · 17/01/2017 23:46

Sorry but now there's something else going on. Just clicked on TIO and the Mumsnet logo is all blurry

That looks like interpolation rather than anything sinister, but it is all a bit weird.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine that site is indeed interesting! And, yes, a LOT going on with advertising by the looks of things. Some alarmingly titled ones as well.

BertieBotts · 18/01/2017 00:48

Mine's slow too BTW, I'm not just piggybacking.

I've just noticed even John Lewis website has the 'not secure' symbol. Bought something expensive on there two days ago and now worried after reading this article. www.information-age.com/googles-strong-arming-shape-secure-web-just-took-another-twist-123464027/

I thought it was my laptop being useless but it's only Mumsnet that's slow.

catz - can you report your post please so that mn def see it.

ChuckSnowballs · 18/01/2017 08:30

I am also getting the information that this site is not secure, along with the slowness.

Catzpyjamas · 18/01/2017 09:21

I have reported it @OhYouBadBadKitten and I emailed them too. Smile

I am

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 18/01/2017 09:43

i'm getting the "not secure" icon for MN, but worrying also for other sites I had a look at - Digital Spy forums, BBC news, John Lewis and Sainsburys. So a variety of discussion boards AND sites you would enter your card details.

Although as I'm now not getting any site being secure, including my personal and business banking (different banks), maybe it's me? Off to check my security stuff. Although Gmail is secure, and any Google searches I do, odd?

MN very slow, pages not loading on my phone (Android, Chrome, desktop site, not mobile or app), slowish on Chrome on PC.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 18/01/2017 09:52

looked at some of the same sites using a different connection (work remote desktop, Internet Explorer) and got secure sites for all my banking, and http: for MN, DS and BBC news. Sainsburys login page was secure.

Is it a Chrome problem maybe?

LouMumsnet · 18/01/2017 10:24

Morning all. Thanks for all the reports and messages, which we appreciate. Our tech team has looked into the slow running of the site and that issue should now be resolved. Do please let us know if you have any more problems though, wont you?

The other issue which many of you have flagged up to us is concern over the security of the site. Again, we've been speaking to tech this morning and they've asked us to reassure you all that the login page is secure. When you submit your login details it is https and none of your details are compromised.

We hope that sets your minds at ease.

00100001 · 18/01/2017 10:29

@LouMumsnet

But Mumsnet is ALWAYS slow for a lot of people.

There are many people who have come on this thread who have been affected the past few days - and great that's fixed (hopefully)

But my original enquiry as to why MN is slower overall. It is consistently noticeably slower to load than other similarly popular forum sites.

Another one saying that it's slower than most of the rest of the internet, pages timing out, pretty much every day, and has been for over a year now.
Using Windows 10/Firefox, and a Samsung J3 Android phone (don't buy that phone, it's crap!)

About 10% of the time if I hit a link on MN, it will take about a minute to load, or time out. Other sites are fine (except a certain social site hosted by Russians who keep fending off DNS attacks).

NotCitrus · 18/01/2017 11:01

For reference the above comment took 15 seconds to post.

unlucky83 · 18/01/2017 11:05

Not a Chrome problem - I've got the same problem on Firefox -
and things like the homepages are not secure but as soon as you try to login it become secure, that's the case for my bank and things like Tescos and Digital spy (DS login page does say parts of the page like images are not secure but it is a https)....
Actually just looked using MS Edge browser - MN is not secure even on log in page (no warning, but no padlock) - looking at things like Tesco Grocery - and it is marked as being a secure login.

wasonthelist · 18/01/2017 11:07

asked us to reassure you all

Nice but not helpful. Are you going to do anything, or just reassure us all.

AgentProvocateur · 18/01/2017 11:15

As well as the slowness and the porn, I'm getting acccesss denied when I click on random innocuous threads. It's not feeling like a secure site at the moment.

Why is MN so slow?
BertieBotts · 18/01/2017 11:23

Speed seems fixed for me at least. But it's still jumping. Even on the mobile site, it doesn't jump but it's like it invisibly jumps sometimes and I click on the wrong thread title, which is annoying when I do actually have slow mobile internet much of the time.

Is there any reason why it's ONLY the login pages using https? That was standard about five years ago, but it feels outdated now.

BertieBotts · 18/01/2017 11:24

(I miss when Tech used to actually come and speak on the boards...)

BestIsWest · 18/01/2017 11:29

Last night I got a pop up telling me I'd won an iPad when I clicked on one of the threads. Took me ages to get rid of it.

Speed is probably better because traffic is lower now.

The inability to be able to click on a thread title without it opening a completely different thread, drives me crazy!

unlucky83 · 18/01/2017 11:35

@louMumsnet
THE LOG IN PAGE IS NOT HTTPS
or at least not always if you log in using the login button on the dropdown bar that appears at the top if you scroll up the page.
It is if you log in using the option at the end of a thread where it says you need to register to post a copy ...
These images were taken a few minutes ago -big red arrows pointing to the unsecure (and secure!) login.
