Why is MN so slow?

I'm not moaning - honest!

But Mumsnet s very slow - all the time. There's definitely nothing wrong with my internet, I have 200MB download and all other sites are fine.

I just wonder why this is? Are you throttled?

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!

Fine on my iPhone app - on laptop now and used chrome, firefox and edge - all painfully slow. Usualy co-incides with the horrid full screen advert for Netflix, or the CASA one Angry

JanuaryMoods · 18/01/2017 20:11

Still getting worse, sort it out HQ.

Optimist1 · 18/01/2017 20:12

It seems to have improved in the past ten minutes or so!

SapphireBird · 18/01/2017 20:13

Definitely slower today. Painful. If I wasn't feeling so poorly, I'd log off.

mumndad37 · 18/01/2017 20:17

Painfully slow today. On MacBookPro using Chrome browser....

pointythings · 18/01/2017 20:21

Veeeeeeeery sloooooooow.
Windows 10, current version of Chrome.

Notwhatiexpected · 18/01/2017 20:22

Very, painfully slow to load threads.

AddToBasket · 18/01/2017 20:24

Slow, and losing my posts

DaisyQueen · 18/01/2017 20:24

Mine has also been slow all day. Either not loading a page of taking minutes to do so. Not experiencing problems on any other site.

MischiefManagedAlways · 18/01/2017 20:25

I'm finding it very slow using the site on chrome via my phone.

PencilsInSpace · 18/01/2017 20:27

This is crap. I might have to actually go and do stuff Angry

Someone upthread suggested testing pages with pingdom - the results are quite interesting. To me it looks like it's the ads and tracking sites that are causing the problem. And the porn pop-up problem. And the occasional landing on skimlinks problem. And possibly compromising security - dunno.

Ads seem to have caused a lot of problems for a long while now. Maybe time for a complete rethink? I don't mean don't have ads Grin (although I'd happily pay a small subscription for an ad free version) I mean see if there are better ways of delivering ads that are less bloaty and intrusive and are more secure, and that give you a bit more control over what ads you run.

I use adblocker but I'm usually happy to switch it off for sites I use regularly and want to support. I'm leaving it on on MN until this is properly fixed.

I'd really like to know more about the ad tracking sites - Lotame, AudienceScience Inc., Google GPT, Quantcast, Doubleclick and Skimlinks. What data are they collecting from us and what are they doing with it?

PencilsInSpace · 18/01/2017 20:30

Woah, whatever you did in the few minutes I was putting that post together has helped a lot.

MegBusset · 18/01/2017 20:52

Nope - still awful for me

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/01/2017 21:08

hmmm....

Why is MN so slow?

JennyHolzersGhost · 18/01/2017 21:21

MN - I've said this before and so I hesitate to say it again in case you ban me for nagging Grin but, very succinctly:

  1. you have a communications problem;

  2. you have a tech problem.

Please let me know if you are actually listening to us and I will elaborate. Otherwise I'm not typing it all out yet again.

wasonthelist · 18/01/2017 21:30

How can this still mean 30 seconds + to load a thread? This is only happening on MN

Why is MN so slow?
Gallavich · 18/01/2017 21:34

Still pretty slow here
Any word from MNHQ recently?

BertieBotts · 18/01/2017 21:35

Hear hear Pencils.

The third party ads are a problem; the native ones are okay (if visually annoying sometimes.)

When the third party ad service was brought in it was a different beast, a bit naff but harmless. It's now malware ridden and untrustworthy. I'm sorry to say but I run adblock on every site which runs this particular service, because I've often had problems with it. Every time there's a problem with a third party ad MNHQ apologise and block that one specifically but something else always crops up. I don't really understand why they seem so committed to that particular provider? I'm sure third party ads are financially sensible, but this can't be the only provider? Is there a monopoly? I wonder if it's just that they've had the system for so long that they are seeing complaints about the ad service as being people not liking adverts, rather than seeing the fact they're using a crap ad provider.

I would love to whitelist MN as I used to but it's just not worth the random crashes, the offensive ads (or the reporting of each one individually) and the risk of pop ups, malware and scanners.

I think MN would drop a good 80-90% of their users' complaints about advertising and probably a surprising portion of the complaints about usage issues in general if they dropped the third party advertising.

If it's too big a risk to take to drop it outright I wonder if they would consider logging all complaints about advertising and seeing how many of them are related to third party and how many are related to native advertising and how serious these are - ranging from "annoying/I don't like this" to "sexually inappropriate/distressing/impedes on site use".

Oh and it's gone slow again for me tonight.

Jetcatisback · 18/01/2017 21:43

Very slow here, mobile on iPhone using safari Sad And I keep getting the error message as well.

BiscuitMillionaire · 18/01/2017 21:45

Oh the irony of it taking aaaaages to load a thread called Why is MN so slow?

I'm using Chrome on an old MacBook, if you're reading HQ. This slowness to load threads (some quicker than others, randomly) is putting me off using MN.

PidgeyfinderGeneral · 18/01/2017 21:47

Still having to keep reloading threads on iphone and pad using Chrome. The PC with ad blocker is still fine.

I am getting well annoyed with seeing that baby on the right hand side too.

MotherFuckingChainsaw · 18/01/2017 22:10

Painfully slow

That's with variously

iPad
iPhone
Mac

Safari and google.

Can't clear my history too often because it logges me out and takes hours to log back in.

MotherFuckingChainsaw · 18/01/2017 22:11

All other sites load fine. Just mn

unfortunateevents · 18/01/2017 22:47

Very slow still, has been for several days, just MN. Am using Chrome on a Mac. What the chuffing hell is going on?

AutumnalLeaves38 · 19/01/2017 00:29

The excellent posts by Pencils and Bertie sum up everything I'm concerned about.

And other MNers seem just as confused on this AIBU thread:
"Is MN website insecure again? Anyone else got this?"...

Please reassure us, Tech Dept...I'd suffer major withdrawal symptoms if I have to abandon Mumsnet, even temporarily Sad
