Spotting people who you know in RL on MN - What is the MN etiquette?

I'm sure it's been done before but what is the accepted MN etiquette when you spot or think you have spotted someone you know in RL?

ah, but I'm not enough of a "someone" on here to have been noted, methinks! It helps sometimes, you know!

oh don't think so! It was a one-off, months ago -we just happened to be in same hotel. I've never and would never refer to it/out her on a thread. I don't know her in RL at all, met once only by chance. Otherwise, i agree, creepy and stalky andwould hate to be in thatposition myself.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 20/02/2007 12:36

How did you KNOW she was an Mner RTTH???

oh cross posts! I could make a fortune, coudlmn't I?
Sadly know no scandal, though could always improvise!

RanToTheHills · 20/02/2007 12:39

posts on travel-related threads I'd also just been looking at. Where she lived, "issues" of interest, age of children etc etc God,I feel like a stalker now!
where we went wasdoubtless full to the brim with otherMNers as a popular place on here.

Aefondkiss · 20/02/2007 12:56

oh I would want to know if someone knew me in rl and spotted me here

theblonde you should cat the person, whatever that is

poppiesinaline · 20/02/2007 13:04

I spotted a MNetter who was one of the mums at school. I did tell her I had sussed her....on the school run one day.

I thought it was only fair. Then if she wanted to post personal stuff she could name change. Otherwise I would have felt a bit like a stalker

Its quite nice actually. We sometimes pass each other and whisper "have you seen that thread on MN about...." I do have to try and remember not to call her by her RL name and not her post name!!

poppiesinaline · 20/02/2007 13:05

remember to call her by her RL name that was meant to be

trice · 20/02/2007 13:11

I spotted someone. I said hi. I am not sure that they wanted to be recognised and they deleted the thread rather than saying hi back . They haven't posted under that name since so I guess they would rather be anonymous. I am terribly tactless in real life too.

TheBlonde · 20/02/2007 13:13

I'm not 100% sure but I might mention MN to the RL person and see what happens

I have been outed by someone on here! I panicked initially then CATed them to suggest a coffee sometime and they never replied.
Trice...do you think something similar may have happened in your case??? or a mix up in communications or something?

And I got very paranoid reading this thread title as I have just been spotted by another MNetter this morning!! Bless her, she noticed my Pink Square For Maud

I have had this recently. (A lurker, not a poster) Cue panic deletion of a couple of threads and reversion to old name.

Issymum · 20/02/2007 13:32

PPH spotted me and asked, very discreetly, if I was who she thought I was. I'd far rather know that there our other Mnetters out there who know me in RL than continue blithely posting in the happy but deluded expectation of anonymity. Although I think we are the only family in the country with a Vietnamese DD1 and a Cambodian DD2, so I'm fairly easy to spot.

More scarily, somebody I know through adoption "recognised" me on a MNet thread whilst googling for 'Madonna Adoption'. I hadn't considered that Mnet posts might come up in Google search results.

foxtrot · 20/02/2007 13:32

Plenty of RL people know i'm a MNetter and i think i'm pretty easy to spot, but no-one has ever said anything
