Spotting people who you know in RL on MN - What is the MN etiquette?

I'm sure it's been done before but what is the accepted MN etiquette when you spot or think you have spotted someone you know in RL?

People tend to ask on MN later, ime.

I've been spotted a few times. And once someone imagined they'd spotted me, but it wasn't really.

twinsetandpearls · 19/02/2007 22:08

I mught cat them, but I woudl only do it if they were posting quite neutral happy go lucky stuff.

If for example I ahd posted thatI was sleeping with my husbands twin brither ( to pick a random example ) it would be a bit creepy if I got a CAT saying I knwo who you are!

malaleche · 19/02/2007 22:08

I spotted someone but she hasnt posted for a while and i didnt say anything to her. I've been trying to spot my sister but i obviously dont know her very well or id have worked out her username by now. Msybe she just lurks and doesn't waste all evening posting nonsense like me?

SherlockLGJ · 19/02/2007 22:09

Wait until you are alone, and say UCM is that you ???

DinosChapman · 19/02/2007 22:10

I spotted you, NQC . But you didn't remember me because I'm so eminently forgettable...

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 19/02/2007 22:11

I was actually wondering about the reverse today.. how many times we have a convo with someone in RL.. it could be on the phone to a call centre/in a shop etc or walk past someone in in street...

..and it is actually a Mumsnetter than we know and love..

..but we'd never know it!

That must happen surely! Odd to think about it really..

That's where the "Is that YOU ICM?" pin badges would come into their own... .. a little in joke from one Mner to another..

NotQuiteCockney · 19/02/2007 22:23

DinosChapman, who did you used to be?

DinosChapman · 19/02/2007 22:24

I'm Dinosaur, NQC...

NotQuiteCockney · 19/02/2007 22:26

Ah, yes.

To be fair, you only spotted me because we were catting and you remembered my name, which isn't quite the usual run of things.

I met one MNer in a swimming pool and she worked out who I was and came on the next day to ask, was that me?

DinosChapman · 19/02/2007 22:28

That's true, NQC - I hadn't identified you just from your mn persona!

NotQuiteCockney · 19/02/2007 22:28

When I posted my 'hello, I'm new' message, JJ came on to say 'oi, I met you the other day by the bike shed'. I was thoroughly but it's certainly kept me from starting any 'OMG, I met the most horrible mum the other day' sorts of threads.

airy · 19/02/2007 22:30

See now you have to come back and say which mnetter you think you've spotted otherwise we'll all be wondering if it's us

p.s Is it me?? lol

ja9 · 19/02/2007 22:31

i 'outted' someone recently on here without even thinking - i was just so shocked when i realised i knew them that i didn't stop to think!

could really do with some etiquette lessons

skiwear · 20/02/2007 01:26

shphh I think that happened to someone they'd called CAB or similar and been given advice by a MN then posted on here and it was her!

I've been spotted on here several times, and they either just blurt out that they have seen me on here, or ask me about something that I have only posted on MN, making it obvious I've been spotted!
I have never spotted anyone, only the couple of RL friends who post on here & have told me their MN names.

popsycal · 20/02/2007 07:49

I met someone yesterday who I thought might be a MNer but I don't think she is......

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 20/02/2007 09:47

Popsy why did you think she might be but now don't?

popsycal · 20/02/2007 10:38

I did a search on birth announcements for her kids; names.....
although that isn't defintive proof

LieselVentouse · 20/02/2007 11:13

The blonde - who did you spot?

RanToTheHills · 20/02/2007 11:16

interesting one.
How about the other way round, meeting a v "well-known" MNer in RL and immediately guessing who they are? Happened to me on w/e away - was v English and pretended not to know who she was. Should I have outted her? Interestingly, she's far more impressive in the ether than face-to-face!

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 20/02/2007 11:17

Was it cod, RTTH?

RanToTheHills · 20/02/2007 11:20

No! wonder what she's like in RL?!
Can't say nowreally, can I?Not been overly glowing- was 1st impression and only chatted a bit so I'm probably being unfair!

TheBlonde · 20/02/2007 12:26

Sorry I can't say who I've spotted!
I don't want to "out" people
