New feature - @ mentions

Afternoon

As previously requested, we're very pleased to introduce a new tag function.

You will now be able to tag Mumsnetters by name on Talk threads - just type @ followed by their username, et voila! The MNer in question will get an email notification (unless they've turned the feature off). So to tag user LovelyMNer, you'd type @LovelyMNer, and so forth.

This is now available to all users on the Mumsnet site and in the Talk app. It's switched on by default, but if it's not for you, just turn it off by going to Customise Settings.

As usual, this is a beta version, so please do let us know what you think and how it works for you, and we'll feed all your thoughts back to our tech team.

Pointless for me as I have specified MN email address which I only look at very very occasionally.

Can you organise it so that, if you disable this function, the person who tags you gets notified? It would be very useful to let people know that your're not being rude, and also to notify them that it's pointless to keep trying and they're better off doing a PM. Plus it might put off the people who do it purely to goad.

All that means @RebeccaMumsnet is that whenever people want to bring something to HQs attention, there will be a long list of every tagged HQer they could think of

Which is another problem with this idea. You and I will keep getting each other's emails. At least till the end of the Christmas period. But there are many other posters with similar usernames.

I never check that email account. The would rather have a little section where you could check your tagged posts. Like the "I'm on" tab.

@RebeccaMumsnet what would be useful is a note sayinf that you (the poster not MNHQ as already have it) have posted on a thread, particularly for competition pages as some are very similar or are open for such a long time you forget or think it's a new one and there are a lot of pages to have to search just in case

As an aside @RebeccaMumsnet is it disabled for those who cannot access their accounts because of banning etc? Seems a bit harsh to not be able to turn it off...
