New feature - @ mentions

As previously requested, we're very pleased to introduce a new tag function.

You will now be able to tag Mumsnetters by name on Talk threads - just type @ followed by their username, et voila! The MNer in question will get an email notification (unless they've turned the feature off). So to tag user LovelyMNer, you'd type @LovelyMNer, and so forth.

This is now available to all users on the Mumsnet site and in the Talk app. It's switched on by default, but if it's not for you, just turn it off by going to Customise Settings.

As usual, this is a beta version, so please do let us know what you think and how it works for you, and we'll feed all your thoughts back to our tech team.

I've now seen the problem, I keep trying to tick the box in Settings and it keeps refreshing and unticking it. I've tried 20 times now.

I had to give up and sign in on a PC to change the settings on mine. It would not change on my phone.

I never get messages, it will be nice to see something!

I don't know if it has to be PC. I only tried a million times on my phone (iOS) and it never worked. It worked first time on PC.

I unticked the box successfully on my iPad.

Maybe it just has to be the desktop site though.

My reaction was the same, DixieNormas. Did anyone actually ask? I can't imagine anything worse than having my email box filling up with people pestering me about something on MN, and if they need to contact me they can always PM me. Yes, I can opt out, but then if loads of people opt out it makes the entire thing pointless unless there's an easy way of telling who's in and who's out.

And I can't see why developing this was a priority over fixing the User9876654321 issue.

Well I was tagged in a discussion but the email notice came through 30 minutes or so later. The conversation had moved on. But I think it's a useful tool.

I'm not in favour of an edit button. Too many goady fuckers who will back track and change what they originally said - the ensuing argument over what was said/not said would be a nightmare.

Maybe the edit could be like on Facebook. You can correct what you've said but the unedited version is available if you click on a certain button. Personally, I don't care about the edit. It's easy enough to just correct any autocorrects in a second post.

leadpipe a timed edit button, is normally discussed, so after hitting post you then have minute to quickly right any problems.

I agree with pps that having this come through as a PM would be more useful than an email - people can after all turn PM email notification on if they are often absent for periods unlike me hahaha.

I would like an edit option

I suppose with this kind of message board type though edit could get incredibly complicated. People could comment on something which by then had changed, or been deleted. Maybe just an option to change the spelling if one word only
