New feature - @ mentions

Afternoon

As previously requested, we're very pleased to introduce a new tag function.

You will now be able to tag Mumsnetters by name on Talk threads - just type @ followed by their username, et voila! The MNer in question will get an email notification (unless they've turned the feature off). So to tag user LovelyMNer, you'd type @LovelyMNer, and so forth.

This is now available to all users on the Mumsnet site and in the Talk app. It's switched on by default, but if it's not for you, just turn it off by going to Customise Settings.

As usual, this is a beta version, so please do let us know what you think and how it works for you, and we'll feed all your thoughts back to our tech team.

Cheers and happy tagging,

MNHQ

Could somebody tag me please?

SpeakNoWords · 23/12/2016 14:49

@BathshebaSnowflakeStone

BathshebaSnowflakeStone · 23/12/2016 14:57

Thanks SpeakNoWords

BathshebaSnowflakeStone · 23/12/2016 19:47

SorrySoup I missed your reply earlier. that would be very sensible.

00100001 · 27/12/2016 08:46

So after the initial flurry of #"tag me I want to see if I get an email"

Does anyone actually use this? Confused

or will it be akin to the ever so successful year-long cadbury emoticon that was everyone uses all the time...?

BeingATinselTwatItsABingThing · 27/12/2016 10:31

Nope. Not used it once.

WicksEnd · 01/01/2017 12:55

I very nearly landed someone in trouble with this.
What about people who are posting on relationship boards who have abusive partners who have access to their email account?
Fortunately I realised before I '@' the poster in question, but someone's going to do it without thinking.

LeadPipe · 01/01/2017 16:54

But they have to opt in so unless the OP on the abisive thread has opted in to receive notifications then they won't be notified anyway.

SoupDragon · 01/01/2017 16:56

No, I think you have to opt out. I had to at the very beginning of this as I'd automatically been opted in to it.

MonkeysLostApostrophe · 01/01/2017 18:19

The only place for @ is Twitter.
I don't like it here.

MonkeysLostApostrophe · 01/01/2017 18:21

Wicks

I think that's a very important point that you've raised. It's really quite concerning.

LeadPipe · 01/01/2017 22:28

See upthread where we couldn't opt in on our phones - I definitely had to opt in but it may not be that way for everyone.

WicksEnd · 01/01/2017 23:12

LeadPipe, I didn't opt in and I received an email yesterday after someone tagged me.

WicksEnd · 01/01/2017 23:14

I started a thread in relationships to give posters heads up but nobody posted on it. 🙁

LeadPipe · 01/01/2017 23:24

Might be worth getting some clarity on the opt in or opt out initial status MNHQ. @rebeccamumsnet

TiggyD · 26/01/2017 20:50

Just thought of a possible issue.

If you've hidden a thread because it's distressing, or there's a large amount of bigoted arseholes on it, could you keep getting messages trying to draw you back in? If I've hidden a thread I want nothing more to do with it.

LouMumsnet · 27/01/2017 12:27

Hi all. To those asking if you can opt out of receiving emails with the new tag function - yes, you certainly can.

All you have to do is follow this link to adjust your settings. Go to the line saying: 'Notify me when others mention me in a thread'. If you untick the box, it will opt you out.

Hope this answers your questions.

TiggyD · 27/01/2017 18:13

It answered my question thanks LouMumsnet. You're saying I can't turn it off for just the threads I'm hiding. I Can only totally turn it off. Not ideal.

EwanWhosearmy · 29/01/2017 19:51

I've had 2 of these messages now. Neither of them bore any resemblance whatsoever to my username (one was to Another, can't remember what the other one was), and were from threads I'm not even on.

Reported both but not heard anything.

FlissMumsnet · 30/01/2017 11:34

Hi EwanWhosearmy, we're sorry to hear that - most annoying for you!
We'll make sure this gets flagged to tech as soon as possible. Thanks for being patient while we perfect the tagging feature.

FlissMumsnet · 30/01/2017 11:42

Could we also ask for a few more details so that we can give our tech team a clearer picture of what's going on?

  1. Can you let us know which device you're using (mobile, pc, Mac, laptop, iPad etc)?
  2. If you're using a mobile, which one is it (Samsung, Blackberry, iPhone etc) ?
  3. What browser are you using (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google, Chrome etc)?
  4. Are you accessing Mumsnet via the main site, the mobile site or the app?
