New feature - @ mentions

Afternoon

As previously requested, we're very pleased to introduce a new tag function.

You will now be able to tag Mumsnetters by name on Talk threads - just type @ followed by their username, et voila! The MNer in question will get an email notification (unless they've turned the feature off). So to tag user LovelyMNer, you'd type @LovelyMNer, and so forth.

This is now available to all users on the Mumsnet site and in the Talk app. It's switched on by default, but if it's not for you, just turn it off by going to Customise Settings.

As usual, this is a beta version, so please do let us know what you think and how it works for you, and we'll feed all your thoughts back to our tech team.

And only post on some threads, for years tbh, and am frequently called "Fids" or "Fid" by the lovely posters who know me and cba to type more

Well, in that specific case it will work exactly the same as I've got emails turned off :o

This is the sort of change that doesn't bother me in the slightest because I can opt out of it. Those that want it can have it, those who don't can just pretty much pretend it didn't happen.

Tagging is unnecessary! It would be much more useful to be able to quote previous posters without copy and pasting.

Please not nested boards, though, they are a pain in the arse.

And won't OPs get a bazillion emails just when people reply to their threads?

Mind you, I still don't like the "new" emojis and use classic layout on my PC so I'm a grumpy old fucker.

Seriously though, I don't really understand why this is a new thing. Just reply to people you want to address/respond to on a thread, maybe bold their name if you want? If you want to speak directly to someone and they're not answering on thread, PM them?

(I know the non response to reports is a policy now, but reporting disablism/goady fuckery three times and the posts/threads are still up makes me think they're maybe not getting through. I'd prefer to think that then MNHQ are just not arsed anymore when they said they would come down harder on disablism).

We most certainly are arsed, have you reported something today? I will go and take a look.

TBH, much like the PM system, it is not a good idea to @ mention or PM a MNHQer as most folks are part-time and they may not see your message for several days, especially this time of year. The report inbox and [email protected] inbox is communal so will be actioned a lot faster.

Thank you RebeccaMumsnet, I think it was yesterday rather than today (and via the iPhone app) but it's on my TIO (which I imagine you can see as MNers are all seeing )

Or even worse @ tagging the same poster a gazillion times in one post?

Why not just message poster if you want to get their attention?

I'll reserve judgement - my initial thoughts are that it's quite a good idea as long as people don't go mad with it!

Or have an FAO topic and you put the recipient's name in the thread title?

Which means that Fids or Soupy would still see it.

I'd like it if it was nothing to do with my email. I don't want stuff like this coming through to an email as I use an account I may only check a few times a month when I'm really bored since being on Jeffrey's list.

I would use it if I could get a notification in site.

Threads I'm Tagged In.

Then it's there if I want it without being intrusive or interruptive outside of MN.

That said I'm an invisible MNetter. I can't imagine getting tagged by anyone in the first place.
