New member profile facility

Hello all,

We've added a function to Mumsnset so that you can set up a page about yourself that other people will eventually be able to see when they click your name on Talk. We figured this would work more easiliy better than starting a "member profile" thread, though you can of course still do that if you want to. If you go to the "my registration" link above you can get started from there if you'd like to set up a profile. This is of course totally optional, and only for those as want to do it. A number of people have expressed an interest in being able to do that over the months. If you do want to, remember you can answer as many or as few of the questions as you like.

You can set your profile to be "private" so only you can see it, or visible to all mumsnetters. There's also an intermediate level "Mumsnet mates" that lets you choose who can see it. You can set up a list of "mates" by following the "Mumsnet mates" link and typing their talk names into a box.

You can also set up a photo gallery for any pictures you'd to share with other Mumsnetters. For the moment, you can set these to be either public (any registered Mumsnetter could see them) or private to you. We'll add the intermediate level to them over the next day or so.

Anyway, take a look and, as ever, tell us what you think. It's still a work in progress, so we'd appreciate input on what people think works and what doesn't.

I've set up a sample page about me (must be mad). You can see it here .

Best wishes,
Tech

I don't remember changing my name to MyNameIsEarl

So this is attached to your current nickname, so if I fiddle with it now it will just appear when I am IFS?

Oooh oooh - when people name change if they could put their old name in their profile that would help us who have no idea who they now are

Report
Tutter · 17/01/2007 08:09

no, think tech fixed it so it will still appear even with name changes

Tutter · 17/01/2007 08:11

Tech - what if you change your name and want your profile to follow you? Is there a way to do this? I often tweak mine a little, not because I want anonymity, but just because, and I'd hate to have to re-do my profile every time.

Hobbies and fav threads don't come through onto public page. Is that just a hitch tech?

I've heard that Tech is a bit of a looker despite his taste in films

Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion ?!

Really ???

(Not even Some Like It Hot will make up for that aberration....)

it won't keep the book that i'm reading as the thing that i type. does that make sense?
if i put "the phonebook" it deletes it and instead puts my list of favourite books.

Some good feedback here already. And can I just I'm in full support of this profile feature. Fab work, tech!

I've only had a quick look, but what strikes me is the titles/categories chosen. CanI suggest something more like:

My kids/family:

Where I live:

My work:

My hobbies:

Other stuff I want to share:

The private/public option is great. Deffo like that.

Then, can we have a search facility. So I could say search for people who are accountants in London and organise a meet up. This would be a great networking tool.

Also, would be nice if I could "contact a mumsnetter" with multiple screen names and not have to retype message.

Can I ask what might be a silly question? Why would anyone want a profile that's so private they can only see it themself?

Report
nappyaddict · 17/01/2007 09:33

also another category could be age ... obviously optional though!

i filled in mine and made it public

anorak, I suppose it might be handy if you suddenly and quickly want to hid your profile from all but don't want to have to type it all back in later. But, I agree I don't know if that is really a required feature.
