Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

The font is much harder to read.

FreshsatsumaforDd · 16/03/2016 12:24

Ok. I have moved away, looked at several other webpages and now returned to Mumsnet.
I still find it hard to read, and uncomfortable...a real strain and unpleasant on the eye.
I am using an iPad mini so perhaps it is easier to see on larger devices, but for me this is a retrograde step and could not spend very long reading this font.
Sorry.

JUDICIAL REVIEW

Nicky333 · 16/03/2016 12:25

The font is awful, especially in the message box. A lot of sites give you the option to change back to the old way if you wish.

Also, the Discussions of the Day/Trending box defaults back to DotD when you click into something, rather than staying on Trending.

meditrina · 16/03/2016 12:27

"For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged"

That's not right.

Useful things like short cuts to acronyms, FAQs, getting started have all gone.

Nice irony, in removing getting started just when there's a thread to tempt out lurkers.

I hope you'll consider restoring functions, introducing a choice of font, and generally losing the idea that making everything like the app/mobile is inherently desirable. It isn't.

Seeline · 16/03/2016 12:29

I'm on big desktop PC and still find reading it really difficult - I don't think it is actually the font size, it's the style and tone that is wrong.
Also the bits at the top and bottom of the thread which allow you to start, watch, flip, hide and refresh appear to be in all different fonts which looks really weird.

mumto3boysHE · 16/03/2016 12:29

testing testing
Just checking how it looks in the message box... looks fine to me.
However, I have my laptop set to 125% and this has made it seem really big and 'in my face'. I've changed back to 100% but it's too small. I could try a custom size of 110% or so I suppose...
No doubt I will get used to it. But you know we don't like change MNHQ!

Samcro · 16/03/2016 12:29

i think it ......sorry can't even see what I am typing

P1nkP0ppy · 16/03/2016 12:29

I initially thought I liked the new look but the font's giving me a headache 😡
Please change or give an option to view in a different font asap!

Seeline · 16/03/2016 12:30

meditrina if you go to the top of the page where it says Talk in huge letters, there is a drop down arrow menu that gives you those links as I discovered by chance .

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 12:31

Just noticed this Halo - when and why? Did anyone ask for that? Why? What's it for?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 12:32

oh yes, Seeline - so there is. That's good to know, thanks, as I was also wondering where they'd gone.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 12:34

Mumto3boys - I have mine set to 110% because I find it too hard to read at 100% (gimmerish here too) - it's all too small then. 110% is comfortable, except for the message box text which is headache-inducing here too.

daddyorchipsdaddyorchips · 16/03/2016 12:34

The font is really, really awful.

SenecaFalls · 16/03/2016 12:34

It's harder to read, and it's not a question of getting used to it. And posting is really difficult because the font is so light when typing a post.

almondpoisson · 16/03/2016 12:37

Halo ? religious indoctrination

piffle, all of it

almondpoisson · 16/03/2016 12:39

Justine re readability, for me the font density is wrong - far too light; and also the font seems to allow a lot of glare/ make me strain overly to read what is written/I am writing. It looks neat, but functionality is much more important and the very least that should be done is to adjust the density (and preferably revert to a more readable font)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/03/2016 12:44

:( please, please change the font back. I have sight issues and I can barely read this. Its really hard work. Enough to make me abandon mn., certainly on my ipad.

And on budget day when I want to chat with people. Please please fix this :(

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/03/2016 12:45

I know Im really tired and quite unwell at the moment, but it prompted a ridiculous bursting into tears when I saw that you mean it to be this way.

LagunaBubbles · 16/03/2016 12:46

Its hurting my eyes, what was wrong with the original font anyway?

AdriftOnMemoryBliss · 16/03/2016 12:46

Who on earth thinks the changes make less of a difference for those of us who switch between mobile and desktop? The fonts are different! I would have thought kep ping them the same would have made more sense?

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 16/03/2016 12:47

Hate it, hate it, hate it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/03/2016 12:48

I'm logging off. Please please be fixed when it again.

MarshaBrady · 16/03/2016 12:48

Awful - much harder to read

AdriftOnMemoryBliss · 16/03/2016 12:48

I don't mind the mobile font, this one hurts my eyes!
