Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Flowers Justine

I have a headache now. I don't know if it's the new font or if I'm just a sheep.

Beaverlac · 16/03/2016 12:51

What was wrong with the old font? This new one is much harder to read, too pale, making me screw up my eyes to read it.

ElementaryMyDear · 16/03/2016 12:55

I don't see any buttons on the left (desktop). Where are they?

Sallystyle · 16/03/2016 12:55

I posted in chat that I love it.

After 5 minutes I have to say I am wrong. I like aspects of it, but I now have eye strain and everything is looking fuzzy.

If it stays this way I won't be able to post much because it's making me a bit dizzy. It's all starting to blur into one.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 16/03/2016 12:56

I'm another one who's finding this font really hard to read!

The letters look squashed together somehow. It's giving me a headache Sad.

squoosh · 16/03/2016 12:57

Is this one of these changes that helps people who access MN via their phone but hinders those who are on a laptop/P.C?

FurryFox · 16/03/2016 12:58

Sorry I'm another one not a fan of this font. I'm finding that all the words just look jumbled together, nothing looks very clear Confused

WhenDoISleep · 16/03/2016 13:00

I seem to be seeing two different fonts. This thread is showing in a different font the the tread I was just reading in AIBU.

The font in this tread is readable but the font I sa on the other tread is not so good for large blocks of text.

I'm using Safari on an Ipad, iOS8.

EdithWeston · 16/03/2016 13:02

Where's 'unanswered messages' gone?

WhenDoISleep · 16/03/2016 13:02

And that, would be thread and saw, not tread and sa.

Nanny0gg · 16/03/2016 13:06

Do we assume this is a done deal Justine?

Are you only wanting to iron-out glitches, but otherwise this is how it's going to be?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 13:06

"Unanswered messages" is now in the Talk dropdown at the top of the page, see the down arrow next to it? Click on that, and it's in there.

I'm not minding the posts font too much, I can cope with it when it's not large blocks of text (which, to be fair, were hard to read in the old font too) - but EVERY TIME I start typing in this message box, I wince. HATE it.

OurBlanche · 16/03/2016 13:06

The background needs to be less white, I think. The typeface (not font, please ) is OK, I am surprised it passed the clarity test as it is a bit spindly, most especially here in the message box, where we have a lighter weight than the final post does.

The leading needs to be increased, in my once expert opinion (I used to design and digitise typefaces, before they became free and somehow referred to, incorrectly, as 'fonts'). The ascenders and descenders have very little clearance, so all that extra white space is lost, to the eye.

And I do agree with those saying that it does look a little fuzzy after a short while. Probably more to do with the sites display balance than the typeface though - FB uses the same typeface I believe Smile

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 13:07

I reckon so, NannyOgg - see how Justine reckons we'll all get used to it in a couple of days, move on and get over ourselves.

I still say that there'll be some permanently moving on if it stays like this.

cjt110 · 16/03/2016 13:08

The font is very, erm faint and spikey. This!!

I either have to zoom in using CTL and + and the text goes fecking huge, or squint at the screen.

Not for me this change.

mychildrenarebarmy · 16/03/2016 13:08

I'm also finding the font difficult to read. It is slightly easier if I dim the brightness but who wants to faff around doing that every time they switch to Mumsnet. I'd be interested in what you mean by accessibility tests because it seems to be playing havoc with a lot of people.

shoeaddict83 · 16/03/2016 13:09

Really dont like the fact that on the box on the right (mumsnet talk) it now defaults to the Discussions tab, no matter how many times i select the 'Trending' tab (which is the one i want to see!) it reverts straight back to discussions as soon as the page changes or is refreshed.

mychildrenarebarmy · 16/03/2016 13:10

And like a few others I am also getting a headache from trying to get my eyes to focus on it. :(

LoisEinhorn · 16/03/2016 13:10

Me too, really finding it hard to look at

Nanny0gg · 16/03/2016 13:11

Thank you OurBlanche, I hoped an expert would come along.

I suppose I don't think of it as a 'typeface' anymore as it isn't real 'type'.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 16/03/2016 13:12

i've gone a bit headachey and dizzy too actually (not good as I currently am two months into labyrinthitis which makes me dizzy and a bit headachey anyway). Really not enjoying MNing on my desktop atm Sad

PingPongBat · 16/03/2016 13:12

Feeling seriously queasy with the new desktop site. Finding it really difficult to read (on laptop, Chrome, Windows 10).

Mobile on Android looks great, but desktop - urgh. Will try iPad later.

Sparklingbrook · 16/03/2016 13:13

Slippery slope. there will be a Like button by the end of the day probably. Angry

Goingtobeawesome · 16/03/2016 13:14

I have issues with my eyes but I'm getting a bad head ache from the effort of trying to read this new font Sad.

ChippyMinton · 16/03/2016 13:15

I like the clean look.

But the font is too small or spindly for my old gimmer eyesight, and it's even worse in the message box, and TIO is weeny.

It needs to be a touch bolder and a touch larger IMO.
