Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Flowers Justine

Apologies if this has been covered before (I haven't RT whole FT: it has 35 pages - don't judge me) but I can no longer find an 'unanswered messages' button/link. Is it hiding somewhere, or has it gone, for some reason?

Jasonandyawegunorts · 20/03/2016 09:22

pippi

Scroll up to the "TALK" at the top left and next to it is a (/) drop down arrow.
Unanswered messages is listed there.

Thank you, Jason, much appreciated.

I agree with Maryz on the short-sightedness of hiding the buttons.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 20/03/2016 09:33

You're welcome Pipp

something has improved as i'm no longer struggling as much as i was on the first day it switched.

it still feels rather glarey, and there is still an element of eye strain to read it, it certainly isn't as easy. I'm a speed reader, and i'm used to just glancing over the text to take it in, i actually have to concentrate to read this, and while increasing the page size to 125% does help, i don't see why i should do it.

The idea that i have to adjust my screen zoom to access a site i had no issue reading before the change is ridiculous.

I'm not exactly an old gimmer either, i have astigmatism and i'm only 34!

to be honest, the overall feeling is that this typeface, while aesthetically pleasing, is just too crowded together, too boxy, too pale and spindly and just doesn't enable the eyes to track the page with ease.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/03/2016 10:14

agreed.

AdriftOnMemoryBliss · 20/03/2016 10:47

TBH, i actually feel 'wee changes' like this ought to be released to a Beta site you can ask ALL of us to visit and send feedback on, rather than doing something so detrimental to so many of your regular posters.

CoteDAzur · 20/03/2016 11:01

I don't see an improvement.

Threads I'm On: Font is too small. It's tiny. It's also too faint (light). Line spaces are not sufficient. I can read it but frankly don't want to.

Active: Font is large (arguably too large) but it's still too faint and line space is not sufficient. Again, I can read it but it is not a pleasant experience.

I never thought I would prefer the mobile site to the desktop one but now I do.

Jux · 20/03/2016 12:03

The pages float, instead of loading and fitting to the screen. I have to pinch the screen to make them settle down and stay put.

Ipad, Safari. Software up to date.

Kpo58 · 20/03/2016 12:18

Where has the link to the Acronym List gone?

I have no idea what half the random letters mean and I need having to google "Acronym" as I don't really know how to spell it. Sad

DarrenHardysDrongo · 20/03/2016 12:30

It has improved quite a lot for me, although some areas are better than others.
The best font for me, ie the one that isn't making me dizzy/queasy/squint is the font in reply to post. Like now as I'm typing it's perfect. But when I've posted, it won't be so easy to read.

DarrenHardysDrongo · 20/03/2016 12:32

And a loud YY to what Adrift said at 10.47.

magimedi · 20/03/2016 12:36

I see that threads I have read during a session on MN now show up as a different colour - but only by a shade. It's great to have that feature back again, but could it be more of a contrast, please?

On my iPad (Safari), the difference between DotD and Trending is barely discernible. Need to adjust the colours a tad.

MajesticWhine · 21/03/2016 09:41

I am used to the changes now, although I do think this box with Discussions of the day / Trending looks a bit daft, it's a bit too tall and unwieldy, the buttons are fat and to me it doesn't look right. But maybe I'll get used to it.

Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...
trufflesnout · 21/03/2016 10:16

MNHQ will soon think we've gone quiet because we've all gotten used to it. Meanwhile, downloads of Font Changer have spiked Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/03/2016 10:19

I'm just fed up of moaning :( spending much less time on here on my ipad now. That might be a good thing I suppose.

QueenElizardbeth · 21/03/2016 10:23

Me too Kitten Sad

AC is horrible, TIO is horrible. Threads themselves are alright, for me at least.

I don't like it when everything is in different fonts and sizes, it makes no sense.

nickelbabe · 21/03/2016 10:35

I don't like this at all.
i haven't gone through the thread yet because i've only come onto to the desktop for the firrst time in months (having used the mobile site more frequently) and I do NOT like the design one bit.

It looks too much like a mobile site on a desktop - it's ugly and stupid.
the whole point of having a desktop site is that it looks like a desktop site, like a proper page, not just a lerge version of a mobile site - if i want the pissy stupid mobile site, i'll log on through my mobile or tablet.

FFS

When will you lot in MNHQ Tech learn to STOP PISSING ABOUT WITH THE FUCKING SITE

The font/typeface/thing is horrible - i can barely read it (I have astigmatism, but it's only half a bloody dioptre, so it's not even worth fucking mentioning) - it's too narrow, too soft, too grey, whatever, but i can't fucking read it, and when i lift my eyes from the keyboard to the screen, i get a whopping head pain from trying to focus on the narroest lines of type i've ever seen in my life

And of course, there's NO fucking option to change back to the proper site design - can you please stop messing about with it!!!

nickelbabe · 21/03/2016 10:36

seriously, i've only flicked up a couple of posts up the page and I cannot read it

my eyes hurt and I can't put in the effort to strain my eyes on the very pale and faint and thin font.

SoupDragon · 21/03/2016 10:41

I don't think there's any need to be quite so rude.
