Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Bog standard Safari on an iPad and the fonts 1) in a thread, 2) on Active Conversations and 3) TIO are all different sizes/weights

Jessica - in TIO, it's not the thread titles that are the problem - it's the fragment of the opening of the thread that's illegible for me. It is OK on the iPad, but unusable on the PC.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/03/2016 14:08

on this thread using safari on my ipad when I pinch out so I can make the text big enough to read, the text no longer fits on sideways so I have to shuffle the page about.

On some other threads the text fits sideways even when enlarged so its a bit easier. Why are the threads different widths?

HPsauciness · 19/03/2016 14:41

In some ways this has been good for me, I have a natural limit now of about 5-10 minutes reading the new font, post on one or two threads, then I have to get of MN. This is much better for my work rate than when I used to get immersed for hours and hours. It just isn't compulsively readable anymore.

I can't be faffing around changing font sizes and brightness, I MN inbetween working, so don't want to be messing up my usual work displays.

Thanks very much SoupDragon and BoreofWhabylon for those and noted SDGT - we'll look at these asap on Monday

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/03/2016 15:11

I'm still finding it far too faint, even now I've enlarged it. It's still giving me a headache and eye strain.

Thanks bookbook!

Remus, very sorry to hear that. Would you be interested in being involved in testing next week? If so, would you mind mailing [email protected], we're specifically looking for people who are struggling with the current font.

Jessica - am somewhat of a Luddite, so it depends how complicated the testing would be! Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/03/2016 16:07

I have emailed you about being involved in the testing, Jessica. Smile

JessicaMumsnet · 19/03/2016 16:44

Super, thanks SDTG have replied Smile

Remus it will likely involve visiting a url and having an opinion - very much like mumsnetting generally Wink

pointythings · 19/03/2016 18:10

OK, just to stay involved with this:

It seems less grey now, which is good. It is still too small - if I magnify through my browser it's bearable - but it still feels 'squashed' compared to the old font - letters not tall enough and too close together for comfort.

When on my laptop I use Chrome exclusively and it is here that I have the problem. On my phone/tablet it's ok, though that is probably down to expectations as well.

cardoon · 19/03/2016 18:45

What was the name of the old font - this ones a bit of a chore

BoreOfWhabylon · 19/03/2016 19:01

I've just reported a post on another thread - different font again in report message - v large, pale and spindly.

The space to type the report is huge compared to what it used to be, so space to type looong reports.

Iggi999 · 19/03/2016 19:29

I need to stretch the text to read comfortably on my iPhone - but then it's not comfortable as it doesn't fit on the screen. If I only mumsnet from a laptop that will decimate my online time!

the text moves. somehow it is difficult to decipher each word as one scans. it seems to be moving. I am not having problems on other websites. I am prone to motion sickness so moving text and still head is sending my brain into melt down.

Astigmatism. reading glasses. firefox. desk top.

ExitPursuedByABear · 19/03/2016 22:56

It all seems much better now.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 19/03/2016 23:04

I'm still not keen. Haven't spotted any different font sizes (Safari on a Mac), but my middle aged eyes with one contact lens for close work and one for far work are feeling the strain slightly, I keep having to focus deliberately instead of just reading automatically.

caroldecker · 20/03/2016 00:30

I do not understand why you have changed - most users have a preferred access, either phone, laptop or tablet, often because the experience is better for them.
Please tell us how MN or laptop users benefit from the change.
