Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Flowers Justine

*Please go back to how it was MNHQ or at least give us the option to choose.

I can not explain how or why it is affecting me so much but it really is, after 5 minutes of reading I literally feel sick and on the verge of a migraine.*

Same here, making me nauseous.
One positive is that it is breaking my MN addiction, a few more days and I will be able to quit entirely.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/03/2016 13:07

I am still really struggling with it on my ipad. The letters are still too close together. Changing the weight won't sort that out.

On my pc I'm managing by usng font changer and by enlarging the screen further.

I had to take my laptop to the office earlier to print something, which meant unplugging it and running on battery. So the screen lights right up - and I saw what people meant about the almost 3D effect! It was VERY weird.

Look, it's improving slowly but FGS, why is TIO so small still?? It's still TINY. A wee bit clearer (did you change to "book" version as OurBlanche suggested?) but still TINY.

Still Chrome, Windows 7, laptop.

Still giving me a head pain, but not as bad as yesterday's.

Going to bed now anyway. Hopefully by tomorrow this will alllllll have gone awaaaayyyyyyy...

RobotMenu · 18/03/2016 14:09

I feel that they are listening and altering the lettering.

However...

Wouldn't it be easiest just to give the option to choose the font? In the same way I have the choice over layout and colour...

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/03/2016 14:21

I'm using Chrome on the PC, and I can see no improvement or change in the font this morning.

Tbh, it is making MN almost unusable on my PC.

RobotMenu · 18/03/2016 14:36

I think it's the same text as my iPad. This thing is, all of the text on the iPad is separated. A few words here and there, not blocks of text in paragraphs. That's what makes it hard.

specialsubject · 18/03/2016 14:40

still a silly art student font, poor readability.

still huge spaces so too much clicking and scrolling needed. Design catastrophe.

front page is fine because it hasn't been dicked about, talk is awful. Can't comment on rest of site as don't use it (what is it for?).

time to wean off MN. Shame really but there you go. As we always say, 'when someone tells you who they are, listen'. MN are telling us!

I assume there is money involved...

SirChenjin · 18/03/2016 15:12

Yep, suspect a significant amount of money has already been spent and not enough post launch development time has been factored in.

Were any users of the site consulted either at the pre or post launch stages?

StandMyGround · 18/03/2016 15:16

Another one who has avoided Mumsnet due to eyestrain and headaches. The problem for me is the actual font, making it bigger or darker does not improve it at all. It is tiring and unpleasant to read. On the plus side I have managed to get loads done in the last few days.

If this is to be the new font I will probably only post on one regular thread and no longer read others for the sake of my eyes. I am firmly in the give us back the old font camp.

BYOSnowman · 18/03/2016 15:19

Yes - when you spend money on developing'new' and 'modern' it takes a big person to go back or compromise

The font is quite good for short bursts of text but really hurts my head when reading chunk

Roussette · 18/03/2016 16:38

I am just not seeing what for instance Osmio is seeing. It just all looks fine on my laptop with Chrome. It looks very small in the screenshot but on the laptop, it just seems quite normal.

(sorry... I am not doubting others are having problems, I'm just saying what it's like for me and by posting a screenshot hopefully it can be compared with others Smile)

Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...
QueenElizardbeth · 18/03/2016 16:41

OH GOD

I CAN'T COPE WITHOUT MARYZ AND SPECIALSUBJECT

WE CAN JUST WRITE IN CAPITALS ALL THE TIME?

Please don't go. Sad

SecretScwirrels · 18/03/2016 16:41

I don't care about the font but the page twitches and jumps up and down randomly. I cannot stand it.

QueenElizardbeth · 18/03/2016 16:45

Do you mean someone PAID for this? That's like London paying for the Great Fire of London or something. Its like paying to go and see the X factor on stage, when you can watch it for free at home and hear what they're singing.

Surely there are free fonts?

rumbleinthrjungle · 18/03/2016 16:47

Argh this is still here. Sad

It's not so bad on ipad but this is awful on the laptop, it's just too hard to read.

Please say MNHQ aren't going to go to ground and ignore us until we either give up or forget it used to be so much more user friendly than this Sad This is a massive loss of functionality for a cosmetic change.

MTPurse · 18/03/2016 17:02

This thread has been un-stickied?

Yet still no response?

specialsubject · 18/03/2016 17:37

wow - a mention! do I have a fan club? Or a heckler? Smile

specialsubject · 18/03/2016 17:39

MN, can I point you at whatusersdo? (and not just because I am one of their testers, honest!) That will get the site checked out for you at not much cost by real people.

Goingtobeawesome · 18/03/2016 17:44

I'm having to read threads in segments as I can't read a lot of the same thread together without a headache Confused.

IkeaIsNeverCheap · 18/03/2016 17:46

I keep checking back to see if they have gone back to normal, sadly not and also no response?

I wonder if they will just wait and see how many users stop going on and if the site stats are not changed much then won't bother.

I think there should be a roll back option.

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 18/03/2016 17:58

Same here IKEA Sad Suspect we are just collateral damage and doesn't matter if we leave.
