Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Why don't you all just install the font changer as suggested, like, 7 pages ago? I did, and problem solved.

It's all a bit whiny flouncery, really. You should know by now that you're not the customer of this site, you're the product being sold.

DrAmandaBentley · 18/03/2016 18:10

All this thread proves is that people hate change. In a few months everyone will be used to it and the complaints will stop.

P1nkP0ppy · 18/03/2016 18:13

How do I do that on my iPad mini Janet?

SilverBirchWithout · 18/03/2016 18:15

Hi MNHQ,

Can you give us an update about how you are approaching this feedback from users?

Are you waiting to see whether we are just a vocal minority with specific eyesight problems? Or can you offer any insight on whether the devices and browsers some of us are using are not optimising the changes? Or are you trying to fix some of the issues.

Personally I still feel it's to do with how some of us have eyesight which reacts to the extent of white on the page and how this particular size and shape of font contrasts with the whiteness. The narrowness of the font means our eyes are reacting more than is comfortable to the white surrounding the letter.

It would explain why there is a prevalence of people with astigmatism or a tendency to suffer migraines and auras that are find it a struggle.

The best descriptions are from PPs who have described it feeling like reading outside on a very bright day.

SwedishEdith · 18/03/2016 18:15

I've got Font Changer for Chrome so it's all OK atm. No idea about Apple stuff but presume similar extensions available.

SwedishEdith · 18/03/2016 18:16

Should add, the talk pages it still look a complete mess but at least my font is now readable.

SoupDragon · 18/03/2016 18:34

You don't appear to have actually read the thread.

mind you, the complaints may well stop. Not because people have got used to it but because they have had to leave because it is illegible or causing them actual headaches.

I've just been to the "other" site. I didn't like it.

I've come "home" and set my screen brightness to minimum and it's better.

Astigmatism here too. :(

ProfYaffle · 18/03/2016 18:46

The font changer is miraculous! I've got Times New Roman - so soothing and easy to read

SwedishEdith · 18/03/2016 18:48

Verdana is good for screen reading.

TalkingToaster · 18/03/2016 18:48

Thanks for the font changer recommendation, it has made such a difference! I'm working my way through the different ones to see which one I prefer.

DrAmandaBentley · 18/03/2016 19:02

I've read the full thread soup - it happens on all forums, a tiny change and there is outrage, threats to leave etc.

I'm a glasses wearer with eye problems and have no issues viewing the site at all. The again, perhaps I'm special. I think the moaning and whining about the font makes people look quite over invested and silly.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 18/03/2016 19:06

That settles it completely then, we have the officially appointed voice of everyone with vision problems.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 18/03/2016 19:08

Could someone please link / explain how to get the font changer?

MNHQ obviously don't care about being fair to people with VI so I'd like to see if there is a workaround before I just give up.

On the plus side, having only spent 10 minutes per day on here for the last couple of days I have got loads more done in real life.

specialsubject · 18/03/2016 19:09

font changer - genius! Just playing with the Firefox options for 'sans serif' text, which seems to be the major readability cockup.

Arial does seem to be working although Comic Sans Ms looks quite funny... Smile

Lweji · 18/03/2016 19:09

I do think the font used in the text is a little too small, but apart from that I have no problems now that TIO has been fixed.

Lweji · 18/03/2016 19:14

Ah, I've just increased the minimum font size in Chrome settings and it's better now.

ProfYaffle · 18/03/2016 19:15

Anne I just googled 'font changer Chrome'

AnneEyhtMeyer · 18/03/2016 19:15

Wow! Font Changer is miraculous! Suddenly I can read and scroll without pain!

Going to try different ones to find the best, but liking Tahoma.

Allalonenow · 18/03/2016 19:19

specialsubject Where did you find the font changer on Firefox please?

SenecaFalls · 18/03/2016 19:31

I've tried to change the font in Firefox but have not been able to.

BlackeyedSusan · 18/03/2016 19:33

I am using reader view in firefox which is ok to read but no good for posting. mind you my typing was shit anyway!

QueenElizardbeth · 18/03/2016 19:51

Special, it's a fan club I promise - it may be just me small and exclusive, but it's not the sort of club where people stick pins in plasticine models of other people.

I promise. That's my other club.

I can't get font changer as I'm not on chrome.

specialsubject · 18/03/2016 20:04

I am honoured. Flowers

the font changer seems to be working in firefox if you have that.
