Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Ok these are the radio buttons at the left hand side and how they look to me on a desktop. What is the point of them if they are illegible?

Maybe white text instead of black/purple would be an idea. (trying to be constructive with no knowledge of the delicacies of web design)

IkeaIsNeverCheap · 18/03/2016 09:20

I'm using Chrome on my laptop and still some letters are feint and others bold.

ProfYaffle · 18/03/2016 09:22

I'm using Chrome on a laptop too. The font does seem better today though still not as easy to read as other websites.

My buttons on the left are white on blue and easy to read, not purple like QE's.

IkeaIsNeverCheap · 18/03/2016 09:29

I am spending a lot less time on here because of it.

bookbook · 18/03/2016 09:30

Seems a bit better, but when looking at the list of Threads I'm Watching/Last 15 mins/Last Hour they are still too small - (Threads I'm On is a better size) Why are they different? Still having to focus a bit harder than I would like (oldie)
i am on a macbook with chrome

coffeeandlurking · 18/03/2016 09:43

Better for me too this morning, thanks MNHQ Flowers

ViewFromThe4thFloor · 18/03/2016 09:53

I don’t mind it now, no more headaches and I can go back to mn'ing and ignoring ironing

BYOSnowman · 18/03/2016 09:53

Don't still too narrow for my liking but spacing is better. Still too pastel!!

CoteDAzur · 18/03/2016 09:59

Nothing has changed for me. The font is still too faint. Line spacing is still too cramped.

Actual threads are sort of legible but Active and Topics are really hard to read.

cozietoesie · 18/03/2016 10:24

The fonts made you iron? Shock

Now that is serious.

sulee69 · 18/03/2016 10:33

Hi everyone, I've read lots on mumsnet but never posted so complete newbie.
I must don't get all the dd ds etc or where to start!Confused

sulee69 · 18/03/2016 10:35

See can't even spell now. You lot are scary. * just not must.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 18/03/2016 10:36

QueenElizabeth - that's what mine looked like to start with as well, but now the writing has changed to white on the blue buttons, so it's ok.

Have you explicitly told MNHQ what set up you're using? Browser, computer type etc.?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 18/03/2016 10:47

hi sulee - just jump in and post.
You'll get the hang of it soon enough :)
There was an acronyms list around somewhere, I suspect it might be in the dropdown from the Talk button at the top of the page, that will help you.

VelvetGreen · 18/03/2016 10:51

It's still here :(. I don't have any visual impairment, don't wear glasses or contacts, but i can't read this font without it looking like the letters are having a disco. Will try again in a few days (hopeful).

coffeeandlurking · 18/03/2016 10:53

Hello sulee here the list! There's loads I don't know either Blush

Samcro · 18/03/2016 10:55

well i have given it time....the lay out is fine. but the font hurts my old lady eyes

BackforGood · 18/03/2016 11:00

Another who has tried to get used to it, (not against change when it is an improvement) but is finding this font very hard on the eyes. I don't have a visual impairment either, and optician said my 'reading' vision is fine. I also do a lot (for work) on my laptop and never have problem with anything else on a screen.

MTPurse · 18/03/2016 11:06

Back again to see if there is any improvement.

Please go back to how it was MNHQ or at least give us the option to choose.

I can not explain how or why it is affecting me so much but it really is, after 5 minutes of reading I literally feel sick and on the verge of a migraine.

I do not have any problems with my eyesight or need glasses but I do suffer from Migraine with aura.

I am using a 27" Mac, it is not the size of the text that is the problem for me.

I honestly feel like someone has spiked me with magic mushrooms or something after about 5 minutes of being on the site, it is like the text is going between dancing and blurring into nothingness.

I have honestly never had problems like this on any other site.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/03/2016 11:36

JessicaMumsnet - I can't work out how to screenshot my TIO - as and when I do, I will post a picture for you. It's no better this morning. Sad

Newes · 18/03/2016 11:37

I never used to get why people would be all "aaaargh! Need paragraphs!" but now I do. Longer posts and OPs are awful to try and read.

QueenElizardbeth · 18/03/2016 11:44

Thanks Thumbwitch, I assumed it was the same for everyone - I'm on the generally hated IE and win 7.

Anniegetyourgun · 18/03/2016 11:53

Not liking it. Please offer option of rollback to old style.

TalkingToaster · 18/03/2016 11:57

Active looks a bit better (bolder?) on my Chrome this morning, but the thread text still seems a bit pale. There is a lot of white, which is a problem tbh with the mobile site as well. I couldn't use the desktop for more than a minute yesterday, today I am managing only about 10 mins at a time. But hey, the house is getting clean!

NewYearNewToads · 18/03/2016 12:40

After two days I'm getting used to the change...I think....

But yes there should be an option to choose between the two.
