Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Flowers Justine

Sorry but another one here who is finding the new font challenging. Not sure what is going on but the wiring is definitely trickier to read, especially on the bright white background. It's very much affecting my eyes in terms of glare and it blurs quickly. Especially when I compare it to other websites. I don't think I will be able to look at a chunk of text for very long at a time.

nemno · 17/03/2016 20:51

Just having a look again, the lines are closer together than earlier. I am definitely seeing things differently to other posters as the writing is not faint or spidery and the buttons on the left are blue with white writing. But the text was, and continues to be, too small for my comfortable reading. I have astigmatism and use varifocals , I'm on a laptop using Chrome.

RobotMenu · 17/03/2016 21:33

The letters are still too thin. The contrast makes it hard to read.

shoeaddict83 · 17/03/2016 21:46

So fine on desktop site, but logged in on mobile and all my watched threads have disappeared. Checked on desktop and they show there so somethings not working!!

CoteDAzur · 17/03/2016 22:03

OK, so I gave it some time to get used to it, as MNHQ asked.

And the new font is still crap. It's faint and difficult to read. It was fine before.

If it ain't broke, why try to fix it?

CoteDAzur · 17/03/2016 22:10

It's not even just that the writing is very faint.

On "Active" page, the lines are too close together relative to font size.

SirChenjin · 17/03/2016 22:16

What exactly was wrong with the site the way it was? Confused

SwedishEdith · 17/03/2016 22:16

It seems to keep changing (testing?) so I can't work out what it's meant to look like.

Why is it so narrow? Why is no-one explaining that?

I like a nice Verdana so I think you should choose that.

PenguinsAreAce · 17/03/2016 22:33

Is anyone else getting the time delay whilst typing that means you have to wait for the text you typed to catch up with you and meanwhile it is whited out? Only started happening immediately after the change went live. Slightly better today, but still happening some of the time.

SilverBirchWithout · 17/03/2016 22:51

Me too Penguins.

PenguinsAreAce · 17/03/2016 22:59

What device/browser are you on?
I am trying to use using safari on an iPad

cozietoesie · 17/03/2016 23:11

If you're on an iPad with the right iOS, why not try the MN App or Firefox. (Safari brings me out in spots and they're both an improvement.)

BackforGood · 17/03/2016 23:24

Sorry if I've missed this in the last 28 pages, but, can anyone tell me where 'Unanswered Threads' has gone? I often have a little peek to see if I can help anyone at this time of night, but it seems to have gone. Confused

SilverBirchWithout · 17/03/2016 23:28

Safari and iPad too.

slithytove · 17/03/2016 23:29

I'm finding it better today, it seems darker and the white is less bright. And I don't even have brightness turned down the whole way

Allalonenow · 17/03/2016 23:32

BackforGood At the top of the page, to the right of TALK is a white circle, this is a drop down menu, click to open it and "Unanswered messages" are there. Smile

BackforGood · 17/03/2016 23:44

Thank you AllAloneNow Smile

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 18/03/2016 05:04

It does seem to be a bit better now. Less white space in the posts, the correct font/typeface size in the message box, all good.

Even TIO seems to be a bit bigger - not much, mind! but less spidery now and more legible. Maybe just darker than bigger. Hard to tell, but it's a bit easier to use (could still do with being a little bigger though!)

QueenElizardbeth · 18/03/2016 06:55

checks back in

it's still the same as yesterday.

I really don't want to be here. The active conversations page just looks terrible. (desktop)

It was fine before. I don't get it.

Roussette · 18/03/2016 08:26

This is so weird. I am just not getting what a lot of people are getting. No small writing, nothing spidery (except on the page "last 15 minutes" or "last hour"), no purple buttons, the white isn't whiter, the writing isn't faint.

To me it is just like it was before but a different font which isn't a problem.

Sorry I am not disputing that others have problems, but just wanted to say that on Chrome on my laptop, all is OK. I honestly think it might be something to do with browsers or some other techy thing.

Shelby1981 · 18/03/2016 08:31

it's a bit better than it was, less space between the lines of writing I think? However still harder to read than it used to be. Date and time of posts are absolutely miniature, as are these buttons:

Start new thread in this topic | this thread | Flip this thread | this thread | Refresh the display

Roussette · 18/03/2016 08:46

Just to say also "Threads of the Day" hasn't changed in 2 days.

It used to change all the time.

DarrenHardysDrongo · 18/03/2016 08:48

Yes, a bit better for me too this morning, not as faint, but still difficult to read and I wouldn't want to spend more than 5 or 10 minutes on the site now.
Scrolling the page makes me feel like I'm spinning my head around Confused um vertigo I think it's called.
