Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

yes mistress, they've gone AWOL a couple of times now.

TheSilveryPussycat · 17/03/2016 17:26

My pages...load...slower

And sometimes I click on something, and get taken somewhere I don't want, because the page was still...loading...

claig · 17/03/2016 17:30

'It's ok when viewed at 150 %, so I do that.'

On Firefox it is perfect at 133%. It has thickened the scratchy thin font, but you have to keep scrolling to the right to see the end of each line of a post.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/03/2016 17:37

It's giving me a migraine - it's too faint.

DarrenHardysDrongo · 17/03/2016 17:55

First visit of the day, I thought I'd look in to see if it's improved at all.
It's still faint and blurry and after about 10 minutes on the site I want out, eyes are hurting and I'm headachey. It's making me queasy Confused

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 17/03/2016 18:07

Same here - faint/ queasy/migraine etc. Did try enlarging it, but as I flick between website, annoying to have to keep changing just for MN.

SilverBirchWithout · 17/03/2016 18:08

It does seem strange and counter-intuitive that the main body of a thread has smaller text than surrounding pop-ups and titles.

SirChenjin · 17/03/2016 18:15

Bloody hell MN - what have you done to this site?? Just got back home and am using it on the laptop - it's far too spaced out, and what the hell font are you using?

How do I put it back to the way it was??!

IkeaIsNeverCheap · 17/03/2016 18:19

It makes my eyes hurt/strain. I dislike it a lot.
Some letters seem in bold other fainter.. For example the word 'all' the 'a' is faint and the two 'll's' are bold. That's just weird.

Can't you just go back to the old font?

Came back feeling this evening feeling certain that MNHQ would have swapped back after all the feedback from those of us with eye issues.

Surely MNHQ, who are so quick not to upset all manner of groups wouldn't want to alienate the visually impaired?

But no, we will just have to wait. Probably only to be told that actually it is ok and we will get used to it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/03/2016 18:26

Just had to turn it off for a while to give my eyes a rest, even with it at 125% - I feel like I'm looking at a narrow tunnel of text surrounded by loads of adverts etc.

DarrenHardysDrongo · 17/03/2016 18:35

Mine's better now. Not perfect, and thread titles are still faint and blurry but when I open the thread, the actual posts are better than they were.

DarrenHardysDrongo · 17/03/2016 18:44

Hmm. For 'better' read less faint. But it's still blurry.

RockUnit · 17/03/2016 19:08

It's gone faint and hard to read again.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/03/2016 19:20

I like the new fonts Smile
I have a visual handicap and I find Mumsnet noticeably easier to read now.
I agree it would be nice on the mobile App to be able to increase font size - I can only do that on Safari atm.

btw, did anyone glance and read that as Mumsnet warning us they were about to have a wee Hmm ?
No ? Just me, then Blush < slinks off >

Newes · 17/03/2016 19:21

It's better with glasses on rather than contact lenses but it's a struggle to keep focused on a thread and follow it.
Everything more prominent than the actual user input? Weird.

DarrenHardysDrongo · 17/03/2016 19:25

Yes it has Rock. The annoying thing is that the site home page is absolutely fine, font easily readable. But when I click on Talk it's horrid.
Off to browse some other sites that don't hurt my eyes or make me feel sick!
Will check back again tomorrow.

ProfYaffle · 17/03/2016 19:31

Maryz interesting you say that re 3d films. I have vision very dominant in one eye, can't see 'magic eye' pictures and 3d films make my weak eye ache. MN at the moment is making my weak eye ache in the same way. There must be something weird going on with the new font affect how our eyes have to work together.

almondpoisson · 17/03/2016 19:42

I also get migraines triggered by 3D movies and hate them as they're very hard work - I have astigmatism in both eyes and if a page is too bright I tend to blank out part of it, or descend into migraine auras and optical migraines while trying to struggle on

eleflump · 17/03/2016 19:56

Oh no, I logged in again tonight feeling sure something would have changed but it's still the same. Is it going to be like this forever, I am really disappointed as I literally cannot read the threads without feeling queasy and that my eyes are straining. I agree that it might help if the text was darker, but it is the blurring as well, as though it has been printed on a fuzzy ink printer. I am using a laptop - can you help us please Mumsnet????

AdriftOnMemoryBliss · 17/03/2016 20:01

is it me or has it shrunk suddenly?

claig · 17/03/2016 20:12

Maybe the font is good for tablets etc, but I don't think it is good for reading on some other devices and browsers. The Daily Mail and Guardian sites are nothing like this, they are OK to read. I don't think it is an eyesight problem, I just think this is not an optimal font for reading.

Mine is bold rather than faint on Firefox but it is still no good because it is blurry and as someone said some letters are sharper and bolder than others. The letter I is faint and the letter a is bolder.
