MNHQ, please may we have Preppers Topic? At the moment we have 'Topic Takeover' on the spare topic of 'Ebola' which is confusing everyone!

We would love to have our own topic to talk about crisis preparation.

The reason they gave last time, if I recall, was something along the lines of 'If there's a Zombie Acopalypse, there will be no internet and no Mumsnet' - which rather shoves aside the whole idea of being prepared for things. All sorts of things.

LadyMaryofDownt0n · 28/10/2015 23:26

Woo hoo hello, I found it!

Yes, please MNHQ it's a viable topic. Just look how many subjects we've touched upon & there's a whole lot more we want/ need to discuss.

Please, pretty please Grin

cozietoesie · 28/10/2015 23:30

When I think of how much 'The Bunker' (or whatever) could encompass.........

Not only that but it could provide some very useful reference threads for people who only wanted to read rather than post.

FuckTheseSixFishInParticular · 28/10/2015 23:55

Wait a second, I have an idea...

FuckTheseSixFishInParticular · 29/10/2015 00:00

...linked to this thread in the topic take currently over going on in the Ebola bit.

Also, I think we might have to concede to calling it 'Crisis Preparation' in order to soothe mnhq's delicate sensibilties, but we can still call it The Bunker among ourselves, right?

SconeForAStroll · 29/10/2015 07:42

I know it's fun to be on the Zombie Apocalypse threads (I still like the idea of HMS Mumsnet), I would like to learn more about generally prepping for bad weather and social unrest.

Plus I live in the countryside where we get flooded all the time!

Stratter5 · 29/10/2015 08:00

Absolutely 100%, and it simply must be called The Bunker - genius name.

Sorry for the neglect, I've been illing in horspital - and there's another prep that's needed. No ready packed emergency hospital bag; you try surviving 4 days in hospital with what your 18yo daughter deemed necessary (hint Minion slippers and a Christopher Eccleston figure not quite as needed as things like deodorant and books).

In all seriousness, Prepping is NOT about zombies, or TEOTWAWNI; it's about being sensible, thinking ahead, and learning to assess what's reasonable to act upon. There's never anything wrong with that.

motherofallhangovers · 29/10/2015 08:10

Of course diacussing prepping is a sensible idea.

We live in a system I'm which - unless we take steps to prepare ourselves - we totally depend on the global system to keep going for our survival

If it broke down - for whatever reason - we would be totally fucked.

History tells us all civilisations come to an end eventually.

Current events (climate change, wars, financial crises, unstable political situations) tell us our civilisation isn't necessarily on particularly stable foundations.

Hopefully it'll all be fine .... but totally wise to prepare in case it isn't.

I think the reluctance among many to face it might come from people not wanting to accept that we're living on a house of cards. Much less scary to not think about it and decide preppers are nutters.

I'd love a preppers topic because I haven't really has a chance to think these things through in a practical sense.

Hopefully none of this would ever be needed. But on the other hand it could save lives.

Please give us a peppers topic mumsnet!

motherofallhangovers · 29/10/2015 08:12

Damn I should have previewed! Hope you can make sense of my post!

Should say discussing

and system in which

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/10/2015 08:17

Made perfect sense mother

Sorry to hear about your hospital stay Stratter5. Hope all is well now. And A perfect example of the simplest of prepping which we all may have to do some time.

It's the little things like a "power cut box" - aka "keeping small children from killing each other when you can't fob them off with tv".

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/10/2015 08:33

hesterton for the first time I can remember there was a burst pipe or something which put our whole area out of water two weeks ago for most of a day. Some bottled water would have helped no end, for drinking and loo flushing. Luckily I popped out to buy some Grin but if it had been longer I guess the shops would have started to run out.

Another vote from me Smile

ISpidersmanYouMeanPirate · 29/10/2015 15:25

I agree that prepping almost has a bad name from the zombie apocalypse stuff. Whereas all of us prep to a certain degree, especially since having DC.

How many of us now go out making sure we have drinks, nappies, plasters etc. "just in case", which we didn't necessarily do pre-DC.

I always carry plasters with me (in case of blisters) and paracetamol (in case of pain) and have done for years. Since being interested in prepping I've just thought through different scenarios to take it that bit further. Eg. a mini torch, whistle and dust mask, in case there's a problem when I'm in the metro.

gleam · 29/10/2015 15:26

Yes please.

Very useful topic.

costbenefit · 29/10/2015 16:21

ClashCityRocker · 30/10/2015 09:03

Come on, we have a gazillion niche topics already, at least this one would be useful!

ISpidersmanYouMeanPirate · 30/10/2015 09:13

Agree!

It would be useful to everyone! Unlike other topics....

As people repeat many times on various threads, you never know what is going to happen. Everyone can be impacted by misfortune of various kinds, so some prepping is useful for everyone.
