Preppers Topic

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 27/10/2015 22:16

MNHQ, please may we have Preppers Topic? At the moment we have 'Topic Takeover' on the spare topic of 'Ebola' which is confusing everyone!

We would love to have our own topic to talk about crisis preparation.

pretty please

atticusclaw2 · 27/10/2015 22:18

We'll let you have
Cake
Biscuit
Brew and
Wine

from our stockpiles when the SHTF

FuckTheseSixFishInParticular · 27/10/2015 22:32

I do genuinely think it's a good topic to have.

There are mumsnetters here who live in fairly disaster prone areas abroad, and some who live rurally enough for severe weather to be a real problem. In the last year alone where I live has seen the main railway line washed away and flooded out in different areas, hundreds of people evacuated due to major flooding, and a fair few people dying due to severe storms.

Prepping runs the gamut from 'extra tins of soup, spare batteries and matches' right up to 'secret bunker', so if nothing else it's a good resource for people to be able to ask questions if they suddenly find themselves having to stock up.

ThomasRichard · 27/10/2015 22:48

Yes please.

Lots of prepper resources are aimed at ammo-heavy Americans with tanks guarding their forest cabin, so it's nice to talk to normal other people about the basics and swap ideas.

PanicNotAtTheDisco · 27/10/2015 23:14

Yes please can we have a preppers board?

It is scorned as being a bit or a lot neurotic or a doomsdayer, but I don't think that's what the vast majority of MN preppers are about. It's actually just about being sensible and ready - house fire or pipes freezing or a substantially long power cut are all things that could reasonably occur to most people in their lifetimes, even if you leave out something like a widespread flu pandemic that disrupts infrastructure on a larger scale.

Surely Mumsnet HQ can see the value in having a space to discuss that? Encouraging people to be in the best position possible for when life shit happens - that's a good thing.

thatstoast · 27/10/2015 23:20

I thought you already had a little corner? MNHQ is normally pretty good at sending off the weirdos to far found sub forums (like people who love Xmas and feminists)

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/10/2015 03:49

We don't have a nice comfy corner of our own yet thatstoast - that's why I'm asking.

OP posts:
winchester1 · 28/10/2015 03:59

Id like one too, seems silly to have it flooding chat.

FuckTheseSixFishInParticular · 28/10/2015 09:33

Prepping is only short for Preparedness anyway, which is something nearly everyone does on a daily basis in some for or another (particularly if you have kids).

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/10/2015 11:58

Bumping, anyone else like a specified topic?

OP posts:
ArmchairTraveller · 28/10/2015 11:59

I'm all for it, but then I'm a feminist who likes Christmas too. Grin
It's just sharing ideas amongst like-minded people who like to be proactive about possible emergencies rather than flapping about and shrieking when the lights go out or the floods come up.

Hey, what about a Christmas Preppers topic, for all those nutters who buy stuff in the January sales for next Christmas? Who stockpile resources in case there's a sudden collapse in the Mincemeat industry?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/10/2015 12:08

Yes we could have sub headings under our 'Preppers Topic'.

A) flooding prepping
B) zombie apocolypse prepping
C) Christmas present and food prepping Grin

OP posts:
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/10/2015 16:54

Anyone else?

OP posts:
thatstoast · 28/10/2015 18:03

I'm preparing for a matriarchal society. Mainly stocking up up on dungarees at the moment. Come on mumsnet!!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/10/2015 18:13

Thanks for the bump thatstoast

OP posts:
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/10/2015 19:43

Okay....as only 5 people want a prepper topic, I can concede that mnhq are probably correct in not giving us one.

Sorry, preppers, Take Over of Ebola, will be the way to go.

OP posts:
atticusclaw2 · 28/10/2015 19:50

Hang on what about the others on the threads. We don't even have Stratters here and she's the original MN prepper

winchester1 · 28/10/2015 19:54

I think a lot of people have boards hidden so may not even know this conversation is ongoing. Also the whole ZA stuff must put a lot of people that actually do this without realing off the whole subject.
I prefer to think I'm aiming for the 'good life' or self sufficientcy (sp?) but if thats call Preparedness/Prepping thats fine too.

Theres far more poeple in the discusisons and I assume some others would just like us to go away do they can hide us if they want to.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/10/2015 19:55

Hooray. Get Stratters over? Haven't seen her for a while.

How long does the site stuff thing run. Do we have time?

OP posts:
gamerchick · 28/10/2015 19:59

Can the name of the Ebola topic not just be changed and we can just carry on?

atticusclaw2 · 28/10/2015 20:02

That would do perfectly well. Its just the ebola topic title that is confusing everyone

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/10/2015 20:06

Yes, every other person posting thinks there's another Ebola outbreak. But confusing, plus! ...always the potential for a pisstake.

OP posts:
atticusclaw2 · 28/10/2015 20:10

And unless someone stumbles across a thread they won't even know we're here..

swisscheesetony · 28/10/2015 20:12

Yes please can we have a PB?

I've got 50mph winds right now which is pretty normal and it's only October. I regularly get power cuts and I'm 50 miles and a boat ride from a supermarket.

I need to be able to discuss the best recipes for cowboy coffee and trout tickling. Plus of course "how many implements do you have within 6 feet which would take a walker's head off"?

This is a topic which is NEEDED. When shtf ocado may not be able to deliver and we will become gods of our own domain.

Please please pretty please. I'll let you have a go on daryl Dixon.

SconeForAStroll · 28/10/2015 20:12

I think a preppers topic is a great idea. I know that for us it's essential as DS has Type 1 diabetes, I have to be prepped for lots of situations.
