Oh the weather outside is frightful,
but Mumsnetters are so delightful,
since we've no place to go,
let gifts flow, let gifts flow, let gifts flow...

Yes, folks, it's that most wonderful time of the year: the day we launch the Mumsnet Secret Santa! True, it's only the end of September, but Santa requires plenty of time to prepare his sleigh Wink

Secret what, you say? You mean you don't KNOW? Grab a snifter of gin and a cinnamon danish and come sit by us while we tell you all about it.

The way it works is this: we ask Mumsnetters to nominate a fellow Mumsnetter* - someone who's had a tough time recently, perhaps, or someone who has been a fantastic source of support to others - to receive a Christmas gift. At the same time, we also ask for gift donations. Once the nominations and donation offers have come in, we at MNHQ match nominees with donors, and contact the donors to tell them where to send their gifts. Et voila: Merry Christmas, everyone.

And just to be clear: this really is a SECRET Santa. Thanks to our tinselled-up tech team, everyone who takes part in the process is anonymous: special Christmas codenames are assigned at the start to both nominee and donor. Neither the team working on matching up nominees to donors nor the donor sending out the present will have anyone's name or username details, and only those who donate will see the address (and only the address - not the username) of the nominee they've been matched with. Security is our number one priority - if you've any questions or concerns, please do ask on the thread (or email us at [email protected]).

But back to the gifts. This year we've created a special

Secret Santa Christmas grotto

where you'll find all the information you need on how to get involved, an explanation of how this annual feat of logistical wonderment works, and an account of how it came about in the first place.

The grotto is also the place where you can make your nomination (at any time between now and October 15th ) and/or pledge to donate (up until 30th October). There are more details about what sort of thing you might wish to give over there too (vouchers are always a good idea), but basically, every gift is welcome. The idea is to spread some festive cheer and make a Mumsnetter's Christmas that little bit more joyful by showing them that they're in your thoughts.

Now, if you'll excuse us, we have something in our eyes.

*Nominated Mumsnetters do need to have been around for six months. We'll be able to see from our end if that's the case, even if they've namechanged.

Gah, only just seen this and I wanted to nominate someone. - I am too late.

I will volunteer to donate instread.

BIWI · 18/10/2015 09:53

But why should they 'revel in their warm fuzzies in private'? I love reading the threads when people find out they've been nominated, or when they receive their gifts. What's the problem with reading that?

I like to 'see' the results of the MN Secret Santa!

CormoranStrike · 18/10/2015 11:47

Oh, I have now read the full thread and am a bit worried - do we have to send big things? I was just planning on something for about a tenner, but chosen with great thought?

BIWI · 18/10/2015 12:05

No you don't have to send big things at all! What gave you that impression? Something for a tenner but chosen with great thought is fantastic. And it's actually more about the ethos of MN's secret Santa. It's absolutely not about sending big, flashy gifts.

glenthebattleostrich · 18/10/2015 16:25

What is wrong with being excited about an unexpected present?

I luffs secret santa. I do all the 'worthy' things too - womens aid, food bank etc, but this is just a nice bit of fun.

I also love the swap thread that appears after Christmas.

I love all of the Christmas stuff, right down to Maryz complaining about all the Christmas threads in October Wink

CormoranStrike · 18/10/2015 17:55

Phew.
What gave me that idea? People mentioning hampers and recipients being underwhelmed by chocolates etc.

daisychain01 · 18/10/2015 22:51

I like the idea of secretsantander (esp. With the autocorrect!) and have bought gifts this weekend ready to send them to whoever I'm told are my recipients by HQ

I felt happy, I hope the nominees will be happy. If they aren't , I won't ever know! I'm not bovvered if they thank me or not, as long as they get a few moments of enjoyment and a warm glow that someone cares

Apart from that I wont be giving the mechanics of it much more thought! Other than that it is an amazing feat of logistics by HQ!

Stratter5 · 19/10/2015 14:26

Oh God, the whining has started already.

Look, it's NOT a popularity contest. One year I got nominated, I was having a really shit time of it. Next year, I wasn't nominated. My posting style hadn't changed, I still had the same 'friends' on MN, I just wasn't having a bad time, and nobody thought I needed cheering up. If it was down to who's popular, and who's not, you'd see the same names every year, with very little variation. You don't. I've been here for years, and years, and I've been nominated once.

Please don't spoil it for those who are having a bad time, and have been nominated. Just be grateful you've not in a situation where an MNer thinks you need cheering up, hey?

AndDeepBreath · 19/10/2015 15:20

(Just to clarify ... I was only kidding up thread. In case that one was at me!)

BIWI · 20/10/2015 07:22

Great post Stratters

I thought I wouldn't be able to donate but I've just been sorting through some things I have stored with my friend. I have two unopened toys (duplicates of what DD had) so I'm happy to be able to donate now. I feel all festive.

SandyMumsnet · 21/10/2015 18:19

Hi everyone, a big thank you again to all you lovely lot. Reading this thread makes us so proud here in Santa's workshop.

The nominations are now closed. Many congratulations to all nominees, just a reminder to make sure you go to the acceptance form and give us all your details so we know where to deliver your gift. You've got until October 30th.

It's not too late to pledge a donation, you've got until October 30th to pop along to the donation form. Remember all gifts are most welcome and no gift is too small.

If all this still makes no sense to you, our festive Mumsnet Secret Santa grotto will hopefully answer any queries you may have, or please mail Santa's Elves at [email protected].

Anyone seen my jingle bell earrings?

I nearly missed this! Where have I been?! Grin

MrsWembley · 22/10/2015 22:25

Oh fuck-a-doodle!

Sandy, I can't remember if I've put my name down or not to be an SS - if I do it again, will it get picked up or will I get two nominees?

DPotter · 24/10/2015 18:55

I missed the nomination deadline - grrrrrrrr

elliejjtiny · 31/10/2015 10:38

Have all the nominations gone out now? Bit worried as the poster I nominated doesn't seem to have received one Sad

FruVikingessOla · 31/10/2015 11:09

But how do you know they haven't received notification that they've been nominated? Confused

Or did you tell them that you'd nominated them?

BIWI · 31/10/2015 13:15

How do you know that ellie?

elliejjtiny · 31/10/2015 14:30

We're on a thread together (which also has a fb group) and I posted a "just wondering if anyone has been nominated" post. it's a thread with lots of people on it and usually 3 or 4 people get nominated each year so it was fairly anonymous. a couple of people replied saying they'd nominated someone in the group too but no replies from people who'd been nominated. Hopefully people are just keeping quiet about their nominations. I was a bit worried this year that there would be people who were nominated but they wouldn't get their presents because of all the namechanging after the hackers.

BIWI · 31/10/2015 14:54

If they've been nominated, MNHQ will know if they're a namechanger.

I'm guessing that people have chosen not to 'confess' given all the misery guts who like to moan about the Secret Santa!

FruVikingessOla · 31/10/2015 15:56

I'm sure that your nominee is just being a bit secretive about her nomination at the moment? [santa] [santa]

Maybe you'll find out in due course?

Jux · 03/11/2015 15:56

I'm very late to this - tbh I haven't seen any SS threads this year until now Blush

Are the nominators kept secret? If you were nominated, is there a way of finding out who or, more importantly, why?

cozietoesie · 03/11/2015 16:42

Secret Santa 2015, Jux. Grin

If you've nominated someone or have an idea who has been nominated, you just keep it to yourself, I think. Smile
