Oh the weather outside is frightful,
but Mumsnetters are so delightful,
since we've no place to go,
let gifts flow, let gifts flow, let gifts flow...

Yes, folks, it's that most wonderful time of the year: the day we launch the Mumsnet Secret Santa! True, it's only the end of September, but Santa requires plenty of time to prepare his sleigh Wink

Secret what, you say? You mean you don't KNOW? Grab a snifter of gin and a cinnamon danish and come sit by us while we tell you all about it.

The way it works is this: we ask Mumsnetters to nominate a fellow Mumsnetter* - someone who's had a tough time recently, perhaps, or someone who has been a fantastic source of support to others - to receive a Christmas gift. At the same time, we also ask for gift donations. Once the nominations and donation offers have come in, we at MNHQ match nominees with donors, and contact the donors to tell them where to send their gifts. Et voila: Merry Christmas, everyone.

And just to be clear: this really is a SECRET Santa. Thanks to our tinselled-up tech team, everyone who takes part in the process is anonymous: special Christmas codenames are assigned at the start to both nominee and donor. Neither the team working on matching up nominees to donors nor the donor sending out the present will have anyone's name or username details, and only those who donate will see the address (and only the address - not the username) of the nominee they've been matched with. Security is our number one priority - if you've any questions or concerns, please do ask on the thread (or email us at [email protected]).

But back to the gifts. This year we've created a special

Secret Santa Christmas grotto

where you'll find all the information you need on how to get involved, an explanation of how this annual feat of logistical wonderment works, and an account of how it came about in the first place.

The grotto is also the place where you can make your nomination (at any time between now and October 15th ) and/or pledge to donate (up until 30th October). There are more details about what sort of thing you might wish to give over there too (vouchers are always a good idea), but basically, every gift is welcome. The idea is to spread some festive cheer and make a Mumsnetter's Christmas that little bit more joyful by showing them that they're in your thoughts.

Now, if you'll excuse us, we have something in our eyes.

*Nominated Mumsnetters do need to have been around for six months. We'll be able to see from our end if that's the case, even if they've namechanged.

RebeccaMumsnet · 28/09/2015 16:50

@Sparklingbrook

Would anyone be notified their nomination was unsuccessful?

Hi Sparkling.

Simply put, no.

We never have. Nominations are almost always accepted it is not for us to decide if they are worthy or not.

If the MNetter nominated hasn't been around for more than 6 months, has deregged or been banned they will not be eligible. However, due to recent issues, we will have a look and see those who have been nominated and deregged, if they have come back under a new account.

RebeccaMumsnet · 28/09/2015 16:56

@ButtonLoon

I do wish we had a choice other than "Boy" and "Girl" for children. My gift is suitable for either but I could only pick one!

Thanks Button, we're looking at this one...

RebeccaMumsnet · 28/09/2015 17:09

@LineyReborn

Hi RebeccaMN on this lovely day.

Will you be able to vet those nominating at all?

Hi Liney,

No we don't vet the nominators. Having said that, a lot of this work is done manually with Sandy and her team looking at each one in turn. So if NEWBIE1 nominates NEWBIE2 (who has an awful new thread) it would raise suspicions and we'd look into it.

RebeccaMumsnet · 28/09/2015 17:10

@Sparklingbrook

Thanks Rebecca I only meant unsuccessful because the poster was not here any more not because you thought they were undeserving. Grin

SandyMumsnet · 29/09/2015 16:41

@frazzledbutcalm

MNHQ ... Can I donate to the person I nominate?

Hiya frazzledbutcalm Nice idea, but Secret Santa is completely anonymous so we're afraid this kind of option is impossible.

SandyMumsnet · 29/09/2015 16:48

@BathshebaDarkstone

Just to clarify: Do I need to state the specific item that I'm donating? If not I can fill it in now!

Go for it! It's not essential to be specific it just helps with the matching. But totally fine to decide later on.

SandyMumsnet · 30/09/2015 11:09

@Electrolux2

I think lots of people deregged and then rejoined. Some under the same or very similar usernames ( like me) Can HQ give an update as to security of PM's now please? Have you changed things? Of course nothing is 100% secure but it would be good to know what has changed and whether they feel things are more secure now than they were.

Hiya Electrolux2,
An important question. We can confirm that no addresses will be sent via PM. Any addresses provided to MNHQ will be temporarily stored within the Secret Santa system and then disposed of securely on completion, which realistically, will be February.

SandyMumsnet · 30/09/2015 11:19

Hiya everyone,

It's a complete joy to watch the numbers creep up on the nomination and donation pages. Thank you to all of you lovely lot for embracing the love and taking part in Secret Santa this year.
Our new Secret Santa grotto should answer all of your queries, but as always, you are most welcome to drop us a line at [email protected] and we will be happy to help you. [santa]

EmmanuelleMumsnet · 03/10/2015 12:28

@sleepyelectricsheep

The wonderful Let Toys Be Toys originated on Mumsnet yet you are asking people choose either girl or boy?!

Are you sure about this?

You make a very good point of course, thank you. We just thought that question might help the matching process on a practical level - but as you know, we definitely have no allegiance to gender specified toys! And we have every trust in Mumsnetters' choices Smile.

SandyMumsnet · 06/10/2015 12:14

@FruSirkaOla

".... Mumsnet secret santander ..." May I have a wee chuckle at that hilarious typo/DYAC? Grin

It must be so hard for Sandy and her Elves to co-ordinate all of this, but they do a fab job Xmas Smile

Thank you so much Fru! [santa]

SandyMumsnet · 13/10/2015 16:35

Hello everyone,

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all who have nominated or donated in this year's Secret Santa. It's a very special thing to see the nominee's names and donation pledges roll in.

Thanks for all your thoughts on the Secret Santa. They're always welcome and we do take them on board and try to improve each year. Although not a perfect set up, we hope folk will stick with it and enjoy the festive goodwill and generous spirit that's been a Mumsnet tradition for many years now.

We wanted to give you a heads up that the Nominations page will be closing this Thursday (15th October) so it's your last chance to nominate any Mumsnetter you think could do with a treat.

The lovely Secret Santa Grotto explains how it all works, but if you have any questions, however small, please get in touch with Santa and his Elves at [email protected] and we'll be very happy to help.

SandyMumsnet · 14/10/2015 10:33

@OddSocksHighHeels

I can't donate this year but I have nominated.

Can I nominate more than one person? I had one who came to mind but there's another I'd really love to nominate too.

Hi there OddSocksHighHeels Please do not worry about being unable to donate this year, we completely understand. You are most welcome to nominate as many Mumsnetters as you like!

SandyMumsnet · 21/10/2015 18:19

Hi everyone, a big thank you again to all you lovely lot. Reading this thread makes us so proud here in Santa's workshop.

The nominations are now closed. Many congratulations to all nominees, just a reminder to make sure you go to the acceptance form and give us all your details so we know where to deliver your gift. You've got until October 30th.

It's not too late to pledge a donation, you've got until October 30th to pop along to the donation form. Remember all gifts are most welcome and no gift is too small.

If all this still makes no sense to you, our festive Mumsnet Secret Santa grotto will hopefully answer any queries you may have, or please mail Santa's Elves at [email protected].

Anyone seen my jingle bell earrings?

SandyMumsnet · 05/11/2015 13:14

@MrsWembley

Oh fuck-a-doodle!

Sandy, I can't remember if I've put my name down or not to be an SS - if I do it again, will it get picked up or will I get two nominees?

Hi MrsWembley, sorry for the lateness in reply here. I've just checked and you have donated, so thank you very much! Flowers

SandyMumsnet · 10/11/2015 10:49

The matching has begun! [santa]
A massive THANK YOU to everyone who has nominated a Mumsnetter or donated a gift. Flowers

Both the nomination and donation pages are now closed, the spreadsheets are out and we're well stocked with gin and biscuits.
Apologies to anyone who has missed the chance to take part in this year's Secret Santa, we'd love you to join us next year!

If you've been nominated and have accepted your nomination, it's now time to sit back and relax. You'll receive your present in December.
If you've agreed to donate something, you'll receive an email in early December with instructions on sending your gift out.

As always, if you have any queries please drop us a mail at [email protected]

SandyMumsnet · 01/12/2015 10:16

Hiya,

It's December! That means we can now send all the donors their nominee match mail giving them all the information needed to send their gift.

A big thank you to everyone for getting into the festive spirit with us. We elves are a happy bunch stuffed with mince pies and eggnog, those spreadsheets certainly work up an appetite. But now it's over to you donors to gather those lovely gifts and work your magic.

We may be full of Christmas cheer, but we are still here to answer any queries you may have. Take a look at our jingly Mumsnet Secret Santa grotto, but if you're still in the dark, please mail us at [email protected].

We can say it now, Seasons Greetings!

christmasmum Thanks for the heads up!

We are SO SORRY about this, please could we ask you to bear with us on this, our techie team are taking a look right now.

Just to confirm that the mails will be duplicates, if you've pledged one gift, we've matched you with one nominee.

SandyMumsnet · 01/12/2015 11:42

@BoreOfWhabylon

Make it stop Sandy - pleeease!

Am overwhelmed with SS emails!

If only I could!

SandyMumsnet · 01/12/2015 12:01

@BoreOfWhabylon

Sandy - my emails are not duplicates! The recipient is the same but I'm beng given three different SS numbers (a/b/c)

SandyMumsnet · 01/12/2015 12:27

We are so terribly sorry about this.
Our tech team are working on a fix right now and in the meantime they've disabled the pop up.
We'll come back and bring you an update just as soon as we have any news.

SandyMumsnet · 01/12/2015 15:43

The lovely tech team have now identified this particular glitch and are working on a fix. Meanwhile please visit HERE where you will be able to print the correct address label and indicate when you've sent your gift.
