<rings festive bells<adjusts fairy lights> Gather one, gather all, for the Mumsnet Secret Santa 2015!

Oh the weather outside is frightful,
but Mumsnetters are so delightful,
since we've no place to go,
let gifts flow, let gifts flow, let gifts flow...

Yes, folks, it's that most wonderful time of the year: the day we launch the Mumsnet Secret Santa! True, it's only the end of September, but Santa requires plenty of time to prepare his sleigh Wink

Secret what, you say? You mean you don't KNOW? Grab a snifter of gin and a cinnamon danish and come sit by us while we tell you all about it.

The way it works is this: we ask Mumsnetters to nominate a fellow Mumsnetter* - someone who's had a tough time recently, perhaps, or someone who has been a fantastic source of support to others - to receive a Christmas gift. At the same time, we also ask for gift donations. Once the nominations and donation offers have come in, we at MNHQ match nominees with donors, and contact the donors to tell them where to send their gifts. Et voila: Merry Christmas, everyone.

And just to be clear: this really is a SECRET Santa. Thanks to our tinselled-up tech team, everyone who takes part in the process is anonymous: special Christmas codenames are assigned at the start to both nominee and donor. Neither the team working on matching up nominees to donors nor the donor sending out the present will have anyone's name or username details, and only those who donate will see the address (and only the address - not the username) of the nominee they've been matched with. Security is our number one priority - if you've any questions or concerns, please do ask on the thread (or email us at [email protected]).

But back to the gifts. This year we've created a special

Secret Santa Christmas grotto

where you'll find all the information you need on how to get involved, an explanation of how this annual feat of logistical wonderment works, and an account of how it came about in the first place.

The grotto is also the place where you can make your nomination (at any time between now and October 15th ) and/or pledge to donate (up until 30th October). There are more details about what sort of thing you might wish to give over there too (vouchers are always a good idea), but basically, every gift is welcome. The idea is to spread some festive cheer and make a Mumsnetter's Christmas that little bit more joyful by showing them that they're in your thoughts.

Now, if you'll excuse us, we have something in our eyes.

*Nominated Mumsnetters do need to have been around for six months. We'll be able to see from our end if that's the case, even if they've namechanged.

I've got three as well. (I had just thought that the system had got to the gin and was spewing out duplicates.

That's got to the gin before Sandy. Grin

SandyMumsnet · 01/12/2015 12:27

We are so terribly sorry about this.
Our tech team are working on a fix right now and in the meantime they've disabled the pop up.
We'll come back and bring you an update just as soon as we have any news.

OP posts:
Kacie123 · 01/12/2015 12:30

Oh, I just deleted the duplicates. Not sure if they have different numbers. Balls.

teddybearsbear · 01/12/2015 12:36

I got 42 emails!! I am so confused!

cozietoesie · 01/12/2015 12:49

42 - I think that that's the record so far ? Grin

Don't worry, Sandy. something was always going to SNAFU. Was it last year that the whole spreadsheet went West at a critical juncture?

christmasmum · 01/12/2015 14:10

Lots of different codes but only one recipient address - handily they're ll a totally different country and I'd promised a gift voucher - what to do what to do what to do????

cozietoesie · 01/12/2015 15:08

Does that country have eg an Amazon? You can get vouchers to a different country to spend there. Smile

(While still sending a separate card if you want to of course.)

SandyMumsnet · 01/12/2015 15:43

The lovely tech team have now identified this particular glitch and are working on a fix. Meanwhile please visit HERE where you will be able to print the correct address label and indicate when you've sent your gift. Your correct Secret Santa nickname will be on the nominee's address label you use to deliver your gift.
Please ignore any duplicate emails and just rely on the info on this page.

Secret Santa is always an administrative challenge, but this error has been a particular faff for you all and we're really very sorry.

christmasmum · 01/12/2015 18:36

Cozietoesie - it was a good idea but apparently Amazon vouchers are only valid in the country in which they are bought - might just get some of their currency and post that!

cozietoesie · 01/12/2015 18:52

I've done it on Amazon to the US - just signed in on amazon.com with my .co password (after a long disucssion with Amazon CS Chat) and proceeded. You could give that a try?

nickelbabe · 01/12/2015 19:35

I had 8 emails Grin
I feel left out seeing how many more some got!

nickelbabe · 01/12/2015 19:38

That's okay. The code on my many emails is the same as the one in your link.

I looked at the country in question and Amazon don't do gift vouchers there! Is cash in their currency just not 'gifty' enough?!

cozietoesie · 02/12/2015 07:17

Oh, that's a bit of a PITA then.

No, I think cash can be pretty 'gifty' although much would depend, I suspect, on the festive message that accompanied it. I'm just conscious that it's very easy for cash, with the best will in the world, to be put into the back of a purse and end up being used for the common weal if things are difficult whereas actual gifts tend, in my experience, to 'stick' more with the intended recipient. Still - if needs must, and if you can find a way of getting it there without it being purloined on the way.

Good luck anyway. Smile

cozietoesie · 02/12/2015 07:22

I think that that's one for MNHQ, Polter.

It would almost look to me as if you hadn't got onto the spreadsheet at all for some reason. I mean - not even getting one email let alone 7 or 8. That sort of categorises you as off the edge rather than just 'less important'. Grin

I'm sure that Sandy or another of the Elves will cast their eye over things this morning - although I guess we need to be conscious of Sandy's possible fragile state after her [hic]ness, yesterday. Smile

SandyMumsnet · 02/12/2015 10:54

Thanks to everyone for being so lovely about the email error from yesterday. Flowers Over the years our tech team have worked their magic on Secret Santa and we do hope you can forgive us this small hiccup. [santa]

christmasmum Ah, thanks for letting us know about this. This is news to us and something we need to address for next year. Please do email us at [email protected] if your match is now unworkable for you.

Polter So sorry to hear this, we'll get tech to take a look and drop you a mail.

cozie A big thank you so much for helping everyone out on the thread Flowers [santa]

If anyone has any further queries please drop us a mail at [email protected]. Try to avoid using the PMing system as there is a chance that your message will not get picked up if I'm not on duty.

Tealtowel · 03/12/2015 16:10

How is everyone posting their gifts? MyHermes or royal mail?

nickelbabe · 04/12/2015 19:36

Royal mail first class here.
It was under a kg, so only £3.30 Xmas Grin

cozietoesie · 04/12/2015 22:37

Royal Mail but I guess it depends what people are sending and the practicalities for them.
