Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

BeccaMumsnet · 04/08/2015 12:52

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

Customised to turn off the alert, still getting emails over 24 hours later.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 10/08/2015 04:01

Urgh, that reminds me, I'll have to brave my email account at some point...

Fiderer · 10/08/2015 07:25

There's no opt out of social media - is that just on Classic then? So to opt out we'd have to SIOB go to New Shock

Maryz I have no undeletable dangly bits (thank feck) but I do have the buttons. Wouldn't mind so much if they were lower down with the link instructions & emoticons but they're big and bold and straight after the last post.

Also find it annoying that I opted out when they first came in and now they're back without so much as a by-your-leave. Shocking manners Grin

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 10/08/2015 07:40

Fids, yes that's right. You can opt out of the stupid social media dangly bogey and buttons only if you're using MN New now, whereas you could opt out in Classic before, despite them saying that you couldn't.

I see NO GOOD REASON for this. NONE.

Fiderer · 10/08/2015 08:05

Thumb Pfft. I feared as much.

So, reasonable requests:

  • Opt out of "Automatic watch...", social media, email alerts without losing/gaining anything
  • Classic remains and no changes in Customise will switch you to New
  • Option to "Remove" / "Bump and reset" on TIO as it is on TIW (which would get rid of the 18 posts) or a limit of 5 (?) posts per thread.

Anything else?

RatOnnaStick · 10/08/2015 08:12

Yes the TIO 18 posts thing is desperately annoying. Its making TIO difficult to navigate. I don't really need to see anything other than the thread title and the fact that there are some new replies, if I want to actually read the replies I will click on the damn thread.

^^

BertieBotts · 10/08/2015 08:31

No don't add a bump and reset on TIO, just put it back to five. Two or three would be fine too. I'm more likely to then click on the threads if I can see at a glance what's there without having to scroll three miles

Also this is an old issue, but are you ever going to get around to fixing the fact that clicking on a picture to see it bigger redirects three or four times (invisibly) so that when you click back (to active/I'm on/etc) you have to click it several times to get it to work?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/08/2015 11:35

At the risk of causing explosions in various people's laptops/phones, I've never really known what the difference is between Classic and New. I use New because I arrived here after it became the default. On the screenshots upthread I couldn't really see any difference.

What! I'd never have guessed that, Maryz. Never.

Bogeyface · 10/08/2015 12:00

I am on classic, how do you change to new?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 10/08/2015 12:40

Well that's one improvement, although I preferred to have 10 posts on TIO - 5 is a bit snippety, 18 was waaaaay too many. never mind! I'd rather have too few than too many. But I'd still prefer the CHOICE back again.

Now, what about getting rid of the social media bogey?

msrisotto · 10/08/2015 12:50

Yay! Back to 5 TIO posts. Awesome, thank you :)

BertieBotts · 10/08/2015 12:59

Hooray :) Thanks MNHQ and Tech!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 10/08/2015 13:12

Who dares me to venture into Customise and see if I can get rid of the social media bogie?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 10/08/2015 13:12
cozietoesie · 10/08/2015 13:13

What's this 5 TIO thing. I have 26! Grin

cozietoesie · 10/08/2015 13:15

Ah got you - 5 per thread. I shall have to go back to work now lunchtime is over. I think I need to spend less time here.

Bakeoffcake · 10/08/2015 13:26

This may have been answered already so sorry in advance but is there now anyway we can now actually watch a thread without posting on it?Confused

cozietoesie · 10/08/2015 13:49

Being on New - I just click 'Watch this thread'. (I have no idea what is available on Classic - and never will now, I guess.) Which are you on, Bake ?

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/08/2015 14:01

ThumbWitches I double dare you to go into 'customise'

Gwan. You know you want to. Gwan gwan gwan

And huzzahs and Flowers to MNHQ for fixing TIO

cozietoesie · 10/08/2015 14:04

AmyGMumsnet · 10/08/2015 14:07

Hi all

Thanks for bearing with us over the weekend Flowers

We can clarify that Tech have not only reduced TIO back down to the most recent five threads rather than the previous 18, but you also now have the option to switch TIO replies on or off in Customise if you want to.

Bogeyface, are you still receiving TIW notifications into your email inbox?
