Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

Now imagining a floating blue glow following Maryz to the loo, to the car, hiding behind trees in the street, fleeting glimpses in the mirror...

RatOnnaStick · 08/08/2015 15:17

It doesn't move though, just drops down once as you scroll down the screen and stays there, faded into the background really. Then when I'm ready to look back in Active or TIO or TIW the button is just there like the right sort of butler fading into the foreground, obsequiousness personified.

Single page here too. I like the ever-present Active, TIO, TIW button. The rest of the stuff on the bar is just frippery.

BertieBotts · 08/08/2015 16:44

I don't like the floating bar either because it feels like it's in the way. I generally don't like elements like that on any sites.

Plus I can't even remember what's on it but I can get to Active or I'm on immediately from the link either at the top or at the bottom of the page. I'm never hanging in the middle of a page so it's always there. Or I just use backspace to go back. Or I press Home to zoom to the top of the page.

cozietoesie · 08/08/2015 17:13

The Viewport Bar? (That option is still in the Customise of Doom if you're able to use it.)

Jux · 08/08/2015 17:50

Could someone do a screenshot of Classic? Just for old time's sake. I know I shall never be able to use it again, but I'd like to just give it a nod in farewell.

I have my little violin out, all ready....

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/08/2015 17:52

But Maryz and Thumb, new is nice and v easy, honestly! I have it all on one page and no cluttery bits.

Thumb, if you google 'take screenshot in Windows' you should get up some youtube videos.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 08/08/2015 18:00

I'll have a go...

nickelbabe · 08/08/2015 18:00

when i joined, i was put on "new" and when i went to "classic" i didn't like it.

but there you go.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 08/08/2015 18:15

I've tried and this is what I've got for you.

I shrunk it down a bit so you could see more of it in one pic. My eyesight isn't good enough to have it that small all the time! Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/08/2015 18:23

Too small for me to see anything Sad

nickelbabe · 08/08/2015 18:36

okay, i see - you've got outlines on your title bars, and you've got underlines.
and your reply box hasn't got the blue top bar.

what does it look like at the top of the page?

i've got quite a widescreen so i'm just happy it all fits on the page.

i see what you mean about loads of white - i like that better because it's easier on the eye.

but not like it was when they made it all white - that was daft.

Yep, I'm on classic still, and now I have my colours back I'm happy.

I never really use TIW anyway
