Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

Fuck this. I'm seriously upset.

cozietoesie · 08/08/2015 14:24

Thumb

Now that you've been in to Customise - and are 'wet all over' (so to speak) - go back in and check you have 'Hide the Social Media' ticked to Yes. It should still be there - about three from bottom.

RatOnnaStick · 08/08/2015 14:24

Oh Thumb Sad Do you need a sit down and some hot tea?

cozietoesie · 08/08/2015 14:25

Oh My. I still have it - are you sure it's not there?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 08/08/2015 14:25

I've been back into Customise - I checked the last time I whinged (I started a thread) and some nice person told me how to do it, so I went into Customise and it is not there.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 08/08/2015 14:27

I can't screen shot on the laptop (bit thick) but this is C&P of what is in my customise options:
Newest messages at:
Messages per Page:
Number of threads in Active Conversations:
Highlight posts by thread author:
Highlight own posts:
Ignore thread stickies:
Put "hide" link on Active Conversations? (hide selected threads from Talk), show thread options on mobile:
Threads I'm On — days to check:
Threads I'm On — sort method:
Display all topics on Talk homepage:
Hide the viewport bar (A.K.A. slide bar):
Automatically watch: threads I start threads I post on
Notify me when others post on threads I'm watching: by email

Note: no hide social media option.

cozietoesie · 08/08/2015 14:29

Now that is ......not good. There will be a good few people leaving Mumsnet if that blasted left hand dangle is there all the time.

Can I check - are you on MN New or (at least notionally) still on Classic ? I know I should recall but my brain is suffering from Fade.

cozietoesie · 08/08/2015 14:30

Here is a sample of mine. (I'm on MN New.)

Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming
RatOnnaStick · 08/08/2015 14:32

Here is mine, also on new (I have no idea how to screenplay on my laptop either so I did it on my phone)

Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming
cozietoesie · 08/08/2015 14:32

PS - re screenshots. Which Widows are you on - if it's a PC?

mummylin2495 · 08/08/2015 14:32

I don't have anywhere to tick social media etc either, and I am on classic same as Thumb. I'm not going to change to new in case I can't change back

RatOnnaStick · 08/08/2015 14:34

Oh goodness, they really are trying to do away with you classic people aren't they?

Jux · 08/08/2015 14:34

OMG is that the next terror they are going to subject us to, enforced participation in social media??????

Bet Gransnet doesn't have to contend with this sort of new-fangled nonsense

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 08/08/2015 14:35

Classic.
And I have just remembered that when I went into it last time, after my last whinge about it, that it did say that the option to remove it was only available in New - BUT it still worked when I ticked to remove it. So I was well chuffed. But now the bastards have obviously fixed that "glitch" and I'm fucking stuck with it, or switching to New, which I absolutely don't want to do.

MNHQ - WHY are you making this so fucking difficult for us? Do you really hate us all that much? Do you want us to leave? This so called set of "improvements" (HA! Angry) has been an absolute arseache from start to finish, and I STILL don't have an answer as to why you fucked around with it in the first place, because NO ONE WANTED IT.

If you need to give Techs something to do, then get them to allow removal of social media crap in Classic View as well please.

cozietoesie · 08/08/2015 14:37

Not quite so, Jux. I'm on MN New and I have it. This is more like a massed pawn attack in chess until everyone is on to MN New by one means or another. Wink

cozietoesie · 08/08/2015 14:39

New's rather good actually. Smile I recal going to Classic recently for an evening and thinking how darned messy it was. You'll get used to it very quickly indeed.

Jux · 08/08/2015 14:40

if you're on Windows, you should have the snipping tool. Look for it under all programs on 7 or just search on 8. I've only just got 10 so not sure about that.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 08/08/2015 14:41

No, I've seen it. Linked threads from someone else's MN on FB, in New - hated it. Too unstructured. :(

cozietoesie · 08/08/2015 14:42

It should still be on your taskbar in 10, Jux - I haven't used it yet on 10 but I saw it there last night after I converted. (I'm on 8.1 at the moment.)

cozietoesie · 08/08/2015 14:48

Yes it is - here's a Win 10 snip.

Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming
RatOnnaStick · 08/08/2015 15:02

I've never come across the snipping tool before, I'm on Win7. Thats a useful little thing isn't it?

New is good. I like new. I've only been here a smidge over five years though and it was default then.

Just out of interest, why don't you like the Floaty Bar? Its so useful.

Don't do it - seriously, don't. If you go in and change ANYTHING you'll be fucked.
if you just go and look you might be ok, but save any changes and you're DOOMED.
