Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

BeccaMumsnet · 04/08/2015 12:52

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers
MNHQ

Yes you're right - I'd obviously only gone onto threads I'd already looked at and already cancelled the auto-add - but now I've been onto a new-to-me thread and seen that the box is still ticked Angry

STILL don't see the fecking point of that. STILL want it gone.

DarkEvilMoon · 07/08/2015 02:35

At least if you are lucky you missed the serial spammer tonight. I got report fatigue from reporting all the spammy posts. I am hoping the night shift got them all.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 07/08/2015 02:47

I haven't been into Active convos yet, so yes, haven't seen them. PITA though!

diddl · 07/08/2015 07:30

Waaaah!

The green is still here!

msrisotto · 07/08/2015 08:09

Yeah i'm still not a fan of the green. I miss my pink/purple combo!

Plus my Threads i'm on is still ridiculously long and untidy.

Seffina · 07/08/2015 08:40

I think that the word 'improvements' may not be used by MNHQ again when referring to planned changes Grin

UptheChimney · 07/08/2015 08:51

Another one recoiling from the lime green OP highlighting. I had a lovely muted grey, and my posts in a muted lavender.

Improvements, my foot. But that's what the techs say at work, and your heart sinks. You just know that means harder to use, less modifiable, and with more passwords.

CheeseBaguette · 07/08/2015 09:28

Is it safe to come back and start using MN again yrt?

I just buggered off for a few days as could not be arsed to use it.

I have to say I have not gone into cutomise to change the email thing because after the Heartbleed debacle I closed my old MN account I had used for years and years and opended this account using an email address I only use for Mumsnet and nothing else. I rarely log into it but think I best had to see how full my inbox is.

What is the latest advice for those of us not wanting the changes?

CheeseBaguette · 07/08/2015 09:31

Right just seen - That Green has to go - Sorry Its making for hard reading. There is no way I can mumsnet for hours using that colour.

I used to have a muted green before on my customised settings.

I like th eLavender. I used to have that too.

But please - do something to mute down that green!

nickelbabe · 07/08/2015 09:49

Oh Jesus wept.

Now I'm on my pc, the colour of the OP and my colour are completely different!!
Shock

here was i going "they're close enough for me"
but on the laptop, i'm a kind of pale grey with a purple tinge if you look right, and the OP is a minty but bright green.

On my PC, I'm an awful pinky shade of pale purple (quite obviously purple) and the OP is a very bright and sunny green that's almost luminous.

I can live with the purple, i think, but that green is not nice at all.

Can I just at this point say that green is my favourite colour in the whole world and even I don't like the green of the OP

nickelbabe · 07/08/2015 09:53

i still think that the green i did in my last picture post is better.

nickelbabe · 07/08/2015 09:57

I would also like to highlight to MNHQ what DarkEvilMoon has said:

" The ability to select colours to suit individual was a fabulous accessiblity tool."

and this suggestion is great too
" And I do think that new registers should have to watch a short this is the features video/work through a welcome to the site we have lots of boards not just aibu and we have some fabulous accessibility tools to help make the site user friendly. The number of people who said they just did not know about the feature was high compared to the number of different posters."

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/08/2015 11:06

We seem to be back to normal! Hurrah! Still not going anywhere near Customise for a bit to be on the safe side though....

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/08/2015 11:06

Spoke too soon there. The post of mine above is lavender. The one I just looked at on another thread was my own choice of dark green. Hmm.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/08/2015 11:07

Now all green again. I think I'll just retreat for a bit...

Seffina · 07/08/2015 11:07

The green seems to have changed, but now my posts are the same colour Confused

Let's see what happens when I post this.

Seffina · 07/08/2015 11:09

Oh it's ok, I have choices again!

Yay!

Seffina · 07/08/2015 11:10

Thanks MNHQ Brew

Jux · 07/08/2015 11:11

Do we still have profiles? It would be nice if more people did profiles Grin, so that feature could be included too, so that people would at least know it was there.

cozietoesie · 07/08/2015 11:11

The choices have just Gawn - back to green for everything again. A better brand of elastoplast is needed, MNHQ.

Jux · 07/08/2015 11:12

Yay!!!! Thank you Tech! My colours are back! I am sooooo happy that I almost - almost - don't kind about the clicky box TIW thing.

Dawndonnaagain · 07/08/2015 11:14

Thank you! Everything back to normal. I can read it properly, hurrah!

WorraLiberty · 07/08/2015 11:15

Seffina, thank god you said we have choices again because I was just about to throw my toys out of the pram, at the fact both mine and the OP's posts were green again! Grin

cozietoesie · 07/08/2015 11:19

Sorry, Worra. It all reverted about 10 minutes ago.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 07/08/2015 11:24

Just posting to check mine.
