Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

I'm wondering - does anyone out there actually think that these are improvements?!

nickelbabe · 06/08/2015 22:52

That blue bar keeps popping up on my laptop too - it's just crap - totally useless and disruptive.

However, I also need to say that Bertie - on my laptop your amended green is too pale.
I'm on windows 8 here and it has a really annoying habit of brightening a picture when it thinks it's too dark, and that shade is too close to white for it to realise that it's not actually white.

A little bit darker than yours is good

DarkEvilMoon · 06/08/2015 22:54

BIWI i can no longer read highlighted posts because the colours are too dark. It is discriminatory against people with disabilities and medical problems. In short NO it is not an improvement.

DarkEvilMoon · 06/08/2015 22:56

Oh and I still have a double/multiple posting issue Hmm

nickelbabe · 06/08/2015 22:59

It is indeed discriminatory against visual impairments etc

nickelbabe · 06/08/2015 23:05

~Bertie- as your thread is too long - is this any darker than your one?
i just lightened it by 3 clicks in photoshop
its shade number is #CBF0CF
HSB is 126/15/94
and RGB is 203/240/207

but if i click "only web colours" ity changes to #CCFFCC

MNHQ please rethink the colours of the highlights. It's very unfair for those that have eyesight problems. What you have done today is certainly not an improvement. Please give this more thought and return to the original colours so that anyone with visual impairment can enjoy being on this site.

BertieBotts · 06/08/2015 23:10

I think it is darker yes but hard to tell - you have to lighten only the green part and not the rest because you have to look at colours in relation to other colours. So having lightened all of the blue and even the black text doesn't work I'm afraid :( If you just draw the selection over the green part it would work better (text isn't as important as all the surrounding bits in judging a colour.)

Don't click only web colours. That's an outdated standard and unnecessary :) The six digit # (hexadecimal) code is fine for today's browsers.

when i clicked one again, it was too light for my liking

nickelbabe · 06/08/2015 23:14

I just did it quickly - I cut out the section and then lightened it and pasted it back onto the original.
So I didn't touch any of the rest of it.
But I might have lightened the blue too, i can't remember how much i cut out (and of course the text is lighter too - I could have painted it - hang on, i'll try another way)

BertieBotts · 06/08/2015 23:15

It should be subtle. If it's noticeable then it stands out too much. The purple works because it's very similar in saturation and lightness to the blue - in fact, it's less saturated, which is a good thing. But it looked grey initially. I've got used to it now and it looks nice and just calm. But the green is still jarring whenever I open a thread.

However folk are saying green is causing dyslexia/accessibility issues. I don't know if this is an issue with the paler greens too.

Grey would be fine. Not sure why they don't just do grey like the mobile site TBH.

BertieBotts · 06/08/2015 23:17

Ah okay. You need to "cut" a smaller section, like just literally the green bit. Looks like you've cut a section which is an entire half of the page.

You can paint bucket fill it but it's not great because you have to fill in all of the os and ps and ds Grin

Don't worry about the text. It's the blues and purples surrounding which need to be normal.

They have every colour in the world to choose from. It's bonkers that they've picked this! Though it does look pretty pale when you isolate it or place it next to darker colours. It just looks overwhelming in the midst of MN's white and pale blue theme.

Here's mine from earier. I am going to bed :)

nickelbabe · 06/08/2015 23:21

what about?

I sharpened the writing so that it stands out, and the pale green is still the paler green but only the green has been paled.

DarkEvilMoon · 06/08/2015 23:21

Hq recently posted on this thread re colours. Said will get back to us tomo.

nickelbabe · 06/08/2015 23:24

i think it's the contrast of the green that was the problem, not the colour - the darker the background, the harder it is to see the words

nickelbabe · 06/08/2015 23:24

more threads! Shock

thank you Evil

nickelbabe · 06/08/2015 23:26

ah, yes, i read that one in the park when i couldn't log in because the mobile site couldn't remember my password and i couldn't either.
(that'll be the password that i'd never changed and then decided to change it )

DarkEvilMoon · 06/08/2015 23:33

But it is not just the green. I can't read either colour background. The ability to select colours to suit individual was a fabulous accessiblity tool. And I do think that new registers should have to watch a short this is the features video/work through a welcome to the site we have lots of boards not just aibu and we have some fabulous accessibility tools to help make the site user friendly. The number of people who said they just did not know about the feature was high compared to the number of different posters.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 07/08/2015 02:12

Well that was a shock!

I mean, the colours are still basically the same as I had chosen myself to start with (I had the same as nickelbabe, the forest green and silver) but oo that green is a bit eye-popping! Worse on the tablet than on the laptop, but then I have my laptop screen set to be as dark as it can be, so that might be why. Tablet is seriously "BANG" in the face!

The grey for my own posts is definitely grey on the tablet though and that's fine for me, although clearly not for everyone.

I gather the auto-add to TIW has stopped now, is that right? Well that's ONE bonus at least.

I just don't see why any of this was considered necessary - all it's done is create chaos and confusion. :(

DarkEvilMoon · 07/08/2015 02:20

Nope i still have the auto add to tiw Hmm
