Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

Back to dark lavender and mint :)

AuntieStella · 07/08/2015 11:30

I turned off the (imposed) colours yesterday. And have just been able to reset them to the ones I chose and am so used to. Thanks for fixing it!

cozietoesie · 07/08/2015 11:32

Well you all may have separate new colours but I'm stuck with the old green for everything. They haven't fixed it properly I'm afraid.

cozietoesie · 07/08/2015 11:33

Screen shots available of course. Smile

cozietoesie · 07/08/2015 11:38

Ah - my apologies. They've restored the colour choices if you go into Customise. (I had to log in again but Hey Ho.)

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 07/08/2015 11:38

Sigh. Back to sludge green for all highlighted posts for me. So mine and op posts the same again Hmm

cozietoesie · 07/08/2015 11:40

Go back into Customise Moving - if you dare! They've restored the ability to choose colours.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 07/08/2015 11:42

I've just been in. Luckily my iPad knows my password because I don't!

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/08/2015 11:50

Hurray!

Thank you MNHQ Flowers

BeccaMumsnet · 07/08/2015 11:51

Hi everyone - thank you so much for your feedback; we have very much heard you and apologies that you haven't liked the recent changes.

We are going to revert back to allow you to pick a colour and you will see the options to change colours of OP and own posts in the customise section shortly.

WRT TIO and TIW, by default you'll still automatically watch threads you post on and receive email notifications but you can turn it off in customise (which will be safe to go into once more - we PROMISE).

Apologies again for springing these changes on you, the last thing we want is to upset anyone. Most of the changes happen to simplify MN as the vast majority of traffic now comes from mobile or tablets and we are trying to streamline things to make them more accessible and easier to use all round. However, please do keep feeding back your thoughts and we will take a look.

Thanks all.

Could you please, pretty please, tell me if the option to change to MN classic or new or whatever has gone & if it hasn't WTF it is?

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/08/2015 12:32

I don't have the option to change views in Customise but I was already on 'New' view. Since you are still on 'Classic' you may well still have the option to switch but then probably won't be able to switch back.

Why not just have a look in customise? Becca has said on the other thread that it's safe to go in there now.

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/08/2015 12:33

Sorry Magi, getting my threads mixed up!Didn't realise you w ere already addressing Becca Blush

cozietoesie · 07/08/2015 12:36

Check your Customise again Bore ? I'm on New and I have them.

FreshsatsumaforDd · 07/08/2015 12:39

Thank goodness! Thank you thank you thank you. Normal colour restored.

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/08/2015 12:43

Deffo no option for me to change view in Customise, cozie

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 07/08/2015 12:43
  • so, if I go into customise to get rid of the auto-add to TIW, I'll still be on MN CLassic view when I come out again?
BoreOfWhabylon · 07/08/2015 12:46

Theoretically yes thumb Grin

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 07/08/2015 12:46

Wibble!

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/08/2015 12:50

Just give me your login details and I'll have a look for you

What could possibly go wrong with that? Grin
