Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

"As part of that we have removed the option to choose different colours. It shouldn't have changed the choice you had already though."

But it hasSad

RealHuman · 06/08/2015 20:13

Look how tiny my reading area is. Begone, foul blue bar.

Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming
MrsVamos · 06/08/2015 20:15

Its horrible, isn't it, Real ?

Mine also delightfully jumps up the page a bit. Hmm

msrisotto · 06/08/2015 20:21

Eugh. My OP posts are now green and the threads i'm watching are 20 posts long! I preferred it when it showed the newest 5 or so posts.

BIWI · 06/08/2015 20:31

This is really weird now. On some threads my posts are still pink. On others they are blue, as if I was from MNHQ!

Have I been offered a new job?!

WishIWasWonderwoman · 06/08/2015 20:32

My colours haven't changed back. It's still the lime green for OP instead of the purple I had selected.

BIWI · 06/08/2015 20:32

Oh no. They're not MNHQ blue, they're some kind of shade of lilac.

Why? Why did you have to change it from the pink that I chose?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 06/08/2015 20:38

I need to lie down. I cannot cope with all this change.

MrsVamos · 06/08/2015 20:41

Here, Hearts

Fiderer · 06/08/2015 21:03

I did a test earlier here but I haven't gone bright, I've gone pale.

Am quite happy with it but now I wonder, am I fading away?

TalkingintheDark · 06/08/2015 21:15

Really do not like the new colours! Wrong way round for me - I used to have OP in pink and mine in green, now it's the other way but also that really horrible harsh green.

Can I have them back the way they were before? Last MNHQ update said Tech were working on it but mine are still wrong...

I'm coming to add my voice to the I hate it brigade

I don't like it - I was on MN classic - I probably will get used to the chosen colours but the actual shades of green and lilac are too harsh, they would be much better muted.

DoItTooJulia · 06/08/2015 21:19

Phew. Me and OP are separate colours again. Wrong, but separate. The green is dire though. I was green, so don't mind it per se (even though it's now random OPs and not my posts) but that is a particularly, spectacularly hideous shade of green.

Bile green. C'mon! Give us a break! How about newborn-chicken-korma poo yellow?

MrsEmmaPeel · 06/08/2015 21:20

I have just posted about this on another thread. My colours changed today.

I don't like the Co-operative Food snot green colour, are they now sponsoring Mumsnet?

I just want the original colours that I chose to highlight OP and my own posts when I customized my settings when I first registered on Mumsnet.

The compulsory colour scheme is not to my taste. I don't like being dictated to by MNHQ, which is becoming like 4 Matthew Parker Street.

And I use the desktop version of MN when posting on my cell phone. I hate the new mobile version that was inflicted on us last year!

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 06/08/2015 21:23

I just don't see the point and am none the wiser having read the thread.

I'm not bothered about picking colours but the watch thread thing is just strange.

brownfang · 06/08/2015 21:24

I almost never used 'My watched threads' before.
I probably will never use it now because it will list all these threads I'm not interested in long term & I don't want to faff about with unticking boxes or customising to not watch every thread I post on coz there are stories about it all going wrong or having to do long searches.

I had the dark olive green before for OP that apparently everyone hates. Don't really care what it changes to. 'Cept Maybe not that garish mustard colour, that would move me to customise after all.

Mess about with Threads I'm On function and you're DeadMeat MNHQ. Angry Grin

Apparently they stated they never meant to get rid of it, they just meant to lock everyone into one colour choice. But I suspish.

Do you think this will be looked back on as Highlightgate? Customisegate? None are particularly pithy. WatchGate? CUNTSGate? (That acronym is inspired).

MrsEmmaPeel · 06/08/2015 21:59

They reckon only 8% of MNers colour highlight posts. Hmm

This will be the tech guys idea, because they get bored.
Bloody men, talk about boys and their toys.

bungmean · 06/08/2015 22:05

The new green is vile.

SoupDragon · 06/08/2015 22:19

They reckon only 8% of MNers colour highlight posts

I think they reckoned only 8% chose custom colours to highlight posts, not that only 8% used the highlight option.

MamehaSan · 06/08/2015 22:24

My eyes....

To MNHQ: THE GREEN IS AWFUL. PLEASE MAKE IT GO AWAY!

I'm being shouty, because that's what the green is Sad

NoahVale · 06/08/2015 22:31

not a nice green

AnnaBegins · 06/08/2015 22:33

Ugh the green is horrendous and giving me a headache. I truly hate it. I had purple before. Please change it back as I won't be able to read posts anymore if this headache continues!

I reckon the 8% must be of all registered users, not all active users. If you think how many people join and post once, they'd have no need to customise. I bet the % of regular users who have customised colours is much higher.

Could you not have picked a calmer colour? Even just grey? Green is discriminatory against users with dyslexia, who will struggle, let alone the rest of us getting headaches!
