Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

You'll be able to opt out of those safely as far as I can see, MrsVamos.

Jux · 05/08/2015 17:34

My posts are still green (smug! That's the colour I chose years ago) and op's are pink/lavender/whatever it's called. If I never go anywhere near Customise, will that stay the same, or will Tech be over-riding it?

Hooray! Thanks, Becca.

Think I'll maybe venture into Customise some time next week, just to be sure it's all settled down.

Stormtreader · 05/08/2015 17:40

Maryz by jiminy I think you've cracked it! Excellent work, have a Biscuit on me! Smile

cozietoesie · 05/08/2015 17:44

Who can tell, Jux ? Who can tell? We live in interesting times. Smile

MrsVamos · 05/08/2015 17:47

I'll pop along if you're doing it after GBBO.

Couldn't miss it.

Currently thoroughly enjoying watching GB (well, Adam Peaty) swim bloody brilliantly !

Team GB are doing really well at the World Champs. Women's Team just got gold in Relay. Yay !

MrsVamos · 05/08/2015 17:51

Oops. Blush Might have been a mixed team got Gold.

Finding it increasingly hard to mn & listen to tv. Or anything else.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/08/2015 17:57

Thank you Becca.

However, I have to agree with this post

As someone earlier noted, thus is just the latest in a series of tech bungles by mnhq. They're losing users' goodwill rapidly over this. I suggest that you call a halt to all your tech strategy and plans mnhq and start from scratch by getting a serious digital user experience expert on board. Because whoever is in charge of your tech decision making at the moment is a dangerous liability.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/08/2015 18:00

Also, Maryz - can I join CUNTS even if I don't actually use Classic view?

(In my case the C could stand for 'customise')

Pleeease?

MrsVamos · 05/08/2015 18:03

I think we have to give it a chance, Bore.

I completely agree with how you feel, but I suppose changes and improvements do have to be made. It would just be nice if it was felt users opinions about things mattered.

It looks like HQ & Tech have listened with the colours, which has left me a bit astonished, to be honest. But at least they have, this time.

I'm sure its the various threads that are running about the various changes that have helped, the thread in AIBU this afternoon is pretty conclusive. From afternoon mnetters, anyway. There might be a row when evening posters come on !

WorraLiberty · 05/08/2015 18:04

Yaaaay! Becca Grin Wine

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/08/2015 18:10

It's the lack of consultation and testing though MrsVamos.

Many posters who are in the industry (I'm not) have said on this and other threads that this is not the way to do things, and MN never used to do things this way either.

MrsVamos · 05/08/2015 18:15

I know, Bore.

I'm trying to be reasonable & fair. Its hard. Grin

When they rolled out the new mobile site, lots of pps came on saying they had tested it, it was brilliant, when it clearly wasn't.

Hard to find people willing to test perhaps ? I don't know.

Just changing things and rolling them out doesn't necessarily mean improved. Not sure HQ & Tech get that.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/08/2015 18:23

You are indeed being v reasonable MrsV Grin

We are in agreement. We are both v reasonable Grin

MrsVamos · 05/08/2015 18:28

I like reasonable. Grin

Bet we get told off for whinging complaining at some point though. Wink

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/08/2015 18:31

Well, I think if we get told off for whinging complaining then we can just start a thread whinging complaining about being told off Grin

I hope they hurry. I don't likes being green. I wants to be purple again. Purple is my favourite colour.

Jux · 05/08/2015 19:20

Green is my favourite colour. I like being green. And now they're going to make me grey.Sad

Why have they taken the colour choice away? It's not actually a hard thing to do and doesn't use much code or anyfink. I'm trying to work out what sort of utter mish-mash of crap they've got in their coding that makes choosing colours so hard. But I can't come up woth anything.

Except one of those things (like my house) where along the years, they've taken an electricity spur from here, and another from there, and then put in an extra gas pipe there and capped one off over there, and eventually, when we move in after 20 years of 'improvements', it takes nearly 2 days for an electrician to find out where everything goes so he can put in a safe fuse box, and no one can work out what goes on with the gas.

I think the site's code is like that.

Suddenly remembers why I gave up programming, after having to update a major stock control system which called something like 903 sub-modules. None of which worked with the new compiler. Thank god my COBOL days are over. Grin

ExcuseMyEyebrows · 05/08/2015 20:26

Our Tech team are currently working on the colour issues - this will mean that your own posts and the OPs posts will be different colours again

Thank you Becca, I don't like the green

Also, I've supposedly hidden the
