Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

Great post nickelbabe.

I'd love to know what percentage of the members of Mumsnet post at least 5 times a week.

And a wave & [tennis} to Mrs V. You must be happier with Rafa now!

FanOfHermione · 05/08/2015 16:08

The thing is when MN added the FB thingy it changed the way I post. I name change very very often. I change details all the time (number of dcs, age, where I live etc..).

One of the pleasure on reading MN is to find names that come back again and again. Bt I would never keep my name anymore (And I have been ion here like for ever... think about 11~12 years).

This change will affect the way I post, something along the lines, I'm not going to post or read (because that's where it's a pain!) anymore or as much as I have in the past.
I'm sure others will do the same.
Having even just 1% of the 'just 8%' not posting WILL make a difference because these are the posters who keep the site alive (and therefore attract advertisers).

Unless of course, everythig now is done through FB and the likes. In which case, I am very very clearly out of here.

nickelbabe · 05/08/2015 16:10

Also, i have discovered in the past 20 minutes that I fucking hate having more than 6 posts in my TIO threads.
18 is far too cumbersome, and a tad excessive.

nickelbabe · 05/08/2015 16:11

I would however like to say that if you're keeping same colours for things, i like this shade of green, but i think it should be much paler for those who can't see properly on dark backgrounds but who still want to be able to see what they're doing.

but "me" still needs to be nickel, not green. it's weird

MrsVamos · 05/08/2015 16:11

I think people would be missed, nickel.

Because once this place does become an extension of fb, twatter or, dare I say it, the Daily bleedin Mail, what's the point of MN ?

This place used to be different. It still is in pockets but I do fear a bit for the future. Its got very dumbed down.

I wouldn't flounce. I'm not that noticable. But I know plenty who would be missed, like you. When you don't see people for a while, you wonder how they are and hope life is treating them well.

That used to be one of the best things about this place. Its changed. And not necessarily in a good way. I'm not here much anymore.

As for being well ? I'm alright. Alive, you know. Not going to bore anyone with my woes. Blush

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 05/08/2015 16:12

I cope with 10, Nickel - I agree 18 is waaay too many!

nickelbabe · 05/08/2015 16:13

agreed, MrsV - it's becoming very "similar" isn't it.

tickers next, i tell you.
I'm looking forward to being able to tell everyone how long it is since my last poo, and whether it had sparkles in it.

MrsVamos · 05/08/2015 16:13

To my shame, rl has been so full on I have no idea what you're on about re Rafa. Blush

nickelbabe · 05/08/2015 16:14

you'd be missed.
I like walking onto MN and seeing names I know (or recognising posting styles of those who have NC)
It's familiar, and it's nice.
comforting, even.

magimedi · 05/08/2015 16:15

Rafa won a tournament in Germany - beat quite a few people who have beaten him lately.

Stormtreader · 05/08/2015 16:18

...And thumbs post is now on my facebook wall Grin

Oh, that's great news, magi. Smile

nickel. Nah, I wouldn't. You even get grief on tennis threads these days, eh, magi ? Wink

That's the thing. Us 'oldies' like seeing familiar names and having chats about nothing and everything.

These days it seems that's not the Done Thing. We all have to be very serious, very busy, working hard, pledging political allegiance and talking about Things That Matter.

God forbid if you don't fit the perceived rhetoric. You're shouted down, told off and made to feel like you have nothing to contribute here or in society.

I don't like it. Which is why, apart from the tennis, or when you can see some posters really are utterly self absorbed planks, I'm not here much anymore.

Sad, but perhaps a sign of the times. I don't like life much. Sad

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 05/08/2015 16:25

Happy to oblige, Storm! Grin

mathanxiety · 05/08/2015 16:51

YAY -- my green OP posts are restored!
O frabjous day, etc.
My own posts were never highlighted, so I am back where I started.

However, MNHQ, please read Nickel's posts here it seems there is a head-to-desk-worthy lack of understanding of the function of colours on threads. The whole point of not having everything white is to be able to distinguish some posts from the rest of them. Now it seems that for some posters there are two sets of posts that, while distinguishable from the rest, are indistinguishable from each other does anyone at MNHQ understand how this may be a problem?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 05/08/2015 16:56

NEW ISSUE I've just had a thread added to my watch list despite customising my settings to say don't do it and not even posting on the thread!

I clicked a thread link from an email regarding a MN product test and it came up with a green "This is in your watched threads header". I did not accidentally hit watch thread of whatever, I literally clicked the link in the email and it opened in safari like that.

FryOneFatManic · 05/08/2015 16:59

I like the colours because I know my brain processes visual stuff best. And the colours help.

FryOneFatManic · 05/08/2015 17:00

And my previous post was added without being automatically added to the watch list!

As I type this one, I've realised the "watch this thread" box is unchecked without me having to do anything.

Thurlow · 05/08/2015 17:09

I really hate the green. It's just too dark so I can't subtly MN at work which means I will use the site less

Plus having different colours for your posts and the OP's posts - it meant you could skim through a long threads and have the colours jump out at you, so you'd know when the OP had responded, instead of thinking the OP had responded and stopping but then realising it was actually one of your posts.

I get that the number of colours people could choose from might be an issue, but

1 - why chose such a BOLD colour, that is so much bolder than the other MN colours?

2 - why decide that people didn't like having the OP and their posts different?

Confused
BeccaMumsnet · 05/08/2015 17:25

Hi all. Thank you for all your feedback and we apologise for the late update.

Our Tech team are currently working on the colour issues - this will mean that your own posts and the OPs posts will be different colours again.

They will also be changing the colours so they will be more accessible for visually impaired users.

Thanks again everyone.
