Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

The green is much too dark - there is insufficient contrast between the background and the type. FWIW, I am not visually impaired.

Why are my "i'm on" threads so looooooooonnngggggggg now?

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2015 21:27

I don't know cashew, long is not good. Sad

cashewnutty · 05/08/2015 21:34

I can't handle change. I am too old. Make it back to how to was.

BikketBikketBikket · 05/08/2015 21:42

I don't like having all the green - I was just for me before, and now all these OPs (who used to be a nice purple) have honed in on the act... For heaven's sake, who thought that removing the colours (or making them all the same) would be a good idea..? Hmm

It was like this when I was at work - Library IT systems designed by IT people for IT people - and not for us Librarians... Angry

BertieBotts · 05/08/2015 21:45

Thank you Becca Flowers Sorry for being such a pain!

CrabbyTheCrabster · 05/08/2015 22:46

Dear fucking god, now the OP's (and presumably my) posts are the most hideous and hard to look at green! WTAF??

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/08/2015 00:44

Good to see this is still rumbling on. DO NOT CHANGE YOUR CUSTOMISE OPTIONS.

I'll just keep saying that because so far I'm very happy that my colours and view are the same.

Maryz - where's that CUNTS thread then? I'll be on my way when I find it :)

DarkEvilMoon · 06/08/2015 01:40

this always makes me giggle (except when I am trying to fix bugs) because it pretty much sums it up. MN code must be an exciting beast with all the tweaks and changes...

Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/08/2015 03:33

haha - that's brilliant! Grin

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/08/2015 09:41

Am really getting the arse now with this wanky "thread has been added to your Watch list" situation - I DON'T WANT IT ADDED TO MY WATCH LIST.

Nor am I going to go into Customise to change it.

It's seriously pissing me off, having to remember to untick the stupid sodding box Every Single Fucking Thread I go on.

WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THIS?!

Jux · 06/08/2015 09:46

DO NOT CHANGE YOUR CUSTOMISE SETTINGS

Just reiterating Thumbwitch's warning.

I agree with you, TheTruth.

In the old days, Tech used to come and talk to us. Many (all?) of the Techs did. We had BigTech, LittleTech, OtherTech etc (I don't think it was actually OtherTech, but you get the idea). It was like a little family

Jux · 06/08/2015 09:56

And they lived in a shack in the woods.

DarkEvilMoon · 06/08/2015 10:30

And we fed them biscuits and gin.

Elysianfields · 06/08/2015 10:49

Mumsnethq - I CANNOT read the green/black combo on an ipad, no matter what the settings. I just about can on the desktop if I fiddle with the brightness to read the op's posts, then change it back for the rest of the thread.

It makes mumsnet unusable.

mummylin2495 · 06/08/2015 11:56

After all the warnings I am not going to change a single thing ! I still have pink as my highlighted colour and I think everyone should still have a choice as we all have different needs. Some people may be able to read in one colour. Others may not. So I think choice is very important. It shouldn't be that there is a blanket colour for everyone
I also don't want to change from classic to new !

SoupDragon · 06/08/2015 12:09

My feedback is that, give nothing was meant to change, I would like the opportunity to get my custom colours back.

Failing that, something in the same tones as the minty green and lavender rather than Shrek Green would be good.

ElementaryMyDearWatson · 06/08/2015 12:15

Gah, I don't want to change anything in case I lose my current colours, but I keep forgetting to untick the "Watch this thread" box when I post, as a result of which I have to keep deleting things from my watched thread box. Seriously MN, why on earth did you think that would be a helpful thing to do? I can work out all by myself if I want to watch a thread without having it done automatically for me.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/08/2015 12:30

For the love of God please put it back to how it was.

I don't want threads I reply to added to threads im on. I keep forgetting to do the box. My watched threads list will get huge and I won't be able to find the important, saved for ever stuff.

I need the colours for my posts and OPs posts.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/08/2015 12:39

"I can work out all by myself if I want to watch a thread without having it done automatically for me."

Exactly this! Whoever thought it needed to be "made easier" to watch threads?? Where was the thread asking about it?

UptheChimney · 06/08/2015 13:11

Arrrghhhh. What has happened to the highlighting options????

I used to highlight the thread starter in one colour and my posts in another. Easy to scan thread etc.

Now they're BOTH in a rather nasty shade of bright green. NSFW for a start.

Another example of bloody tech people making "improvements" that are actually crap. We get it at work, and now here. Yuk

Currently it is sludge green for both OP and you.

BIWI · 06/08/2015 13:52

PLEASE. TURN. OFF. THE. AUTOMATIC. ADDING. TO. 'THREADS. I'M. WATCHING.'

Because you seem to be a bit hard of hearing MNHQ/Tech team!

'Threads I'm On' is totally different from 'Threads I'm Watching'. I'm wondering if you actually know how your users use your site?

I'm not going to click on anything about customisation because I don't want to bugger up the other settings.
