Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

BeccaMumsnet · 04/08/2015 12:52

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

I'll join you on a CUNTS thread, Maryz.
It would be interesting to see how many people do prefer Classic.
I find New utterly unreadable - too much white space! I like the delineation in Classic.

I just don't understand them making such a noticeable change without consulting members first.

That's not like MNHQ, as normally they tend to consult and gather opinions first. Sometimes for the smallest of things.

Listen ?

Not really, from the mobile site experience.

They appeared too, then lots of pps appeared on threads where some of us were trying to help, saying what were we moaning for, moving with the times and in line with other social media is A Good Thing etc, and some things never got sorted. Then you get a stance of "well, we made the changes, you still use MN, so it cant be that bad, we think change is good, overall opinion from users is positive" and that's the end of it.

I've said it many times before. If we all wanted an effing like button wouldn't we all eff off to Fakebook ? If we wanted quick, short retorts, would we all eff off to twatter ?

Perhaps one day there will be no mn site because it will all be linked via other sites ?

I'll miss you all if that happens. I will have lost my little safe haven. Sad

Bloody hell, its happening.

Help me, I'm getting sucked in again.......

I'm trying. to. fight. it..........................

nickelbabe · 05/08/2015 15:54

No, OP and "me" need to be two different colours.

Because it's confusing enough in threads where I am the OP, without every thread looking like that - I don't want to be just another poster and i don't want to be the OP on threads where i'm not the OP.

Even if you made it green for the OP and grey (nickel) for me, then that would be fine.

And the reason it was only used by 8% of users is because hardly anyone knew about it!!
Remember when you introduced it and everyone said what a bloody brilliant idea it was? hmm? well, then you have to make sure that people know about it.

Stormtreader · 05/08/2015 15:56

Whenever I hear some massively unpopular change get brushed off with the "overall response has been good", I always think of

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 05/08/2015 15:56

Ugh. Both mine and the OP's posts now appear exactly the same awful deep green colour. That's useful not

It was so much better when the OP's posts were highlighted in a colour of my choosing and mine in a different colour of my choosing.

I'm Hmm about this 8% figure.
How many of the published membership are 'active'?

MrsVamos · 05/08/2015 15:56

I don't think we'll get the sort of response we would like, ie, perhaps a discussion about changes.

HQ are probably reading and are noting its the same users complaining who complained about the mobile site, same ones who say no to twatter and FB similarities on here.

Diversion tactics. Let them have their moan, then they'll go away.

Its a thing, isn't it ? If you let people moan, they get it out of their system then shut up.

"Maybe only 8% of users look at the colours, but I bet 100% of the users who use mn every day use them."

I concur.

Maybe look at frequency of posters visiting and posting (not necessarily posting, but visiting), look at those who browse, look at those who have threads open. Work out who is using your site on a regular basis, and then work out how many of those use the function.
It's not the kind of function that matters to people who join the site and never use it, or who join because they've seen the facebook link, or even those who come on very couple of months.
It's the kind of function that's important to those of us who will cite MN as a very important tool in our lives - who consider that they've made friends becuase of it, those who wouldn't have been able to cope with certain RL situations without it, those who see it as a lifeline, and those of us who spend rather too much time on the internet.

You know, when I see people ask advice, the first thing I think is "MN would say..." or "you should look on MN"
I'm one of your 8%, you know.

Stormtreader · 05/08/2015 16:00

I couldnt find a way of posting the actual image on here, sorry Blush

MrsVamos · 05/08/2015 16:01

Very apt, Storm. Smile

nickelbabe Long time no see, lovely ! Hope you & yours are well. Lots of love xxx

(alopogies for digressing)

nickelbabe · 05/08/2015 16:04
Grin hello MrsV - someone earlier said that no one would notice if the complainers flounced. I'm happy to note that by you saying that you missed me, that I would be missed if I flounced Grin

(althought I would like a :P emoticon - t hat's the one thing that's missing)

I've been going through odd stuff recently, and I've found myself sucked into facebook more and more, which is awful really.

cozietoesie · 05/08/2015 16:04

'I haven't listened to a single complaint'. Grin

I like it, Stormtreader.

nickelbabe · 05/08/2015 16:04

and hope you're well too xxx

I like the Catbert cartoon.
I will add this too, as it has similar undertones.

In the beginning was The Plan.
And then came the Assumptions.
And the Assumptions were without form.
And the Plan was without substance.
And darkness was upon the face of the workers.

And they spoke among themselves saying,
"It is a crock of shit and it stinketh."

And the workers went unto their supervisors and said,
"It is a pale of dung and none may abide the odor thereof."

And the supervisor went unto their managers and said,
"It is a container of excrement and it is very strong, such that none may abide by it."

And the managers went unto their directors, saying,
"It is a vessel of fertilizer, and none may abide its strength."

And the directors spoke among themselves, saying to one another,
"It contains that which aids plant growth and it is very strong."

And the directors went unto the vice presidents, saying unto them,
"It promotes growth and is very powerful."

And the vice presidents went unto the president, saying unto him,
"The new plan will promote the growth and vigor of the company, with powerful effects."

And the president looked upon the Plan and saw that it was good.
And the Plan became policy.

This is how shit happens.

Yup.
