WHY have you got rid of All On One Page?

Pascha · 10/12/2013 20:18

I HATE pages.

Please give them back!

OP posts:
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/12/2013 09:36

*Its very unfair to take away the ability to view the whole thread from those of us who like it that way because people moan about slow loading and have the option to change that themselves by using page views.

Why force all of us to use it??*

I think Rowan meant that allowing all posts on one page was fundamentally slowing down the site for everyone - not just those who chose the all on one page option.

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 09:40

@Huitre

So we're hoping that the irritation of having to go to a second page will be allayed by a noticeable improvement for everyone in page loading times.

Um, not for me. It totally breaks the functionality of the site for me because I can no longer go to the last read post if it's on a second page.

That doesn't sound right - so are you saying the Bookmark function is effectively not working? If so we'll definitely try to get that fixed

Yes, this is right (as I understand it). The server load created by serving up threads bigger than 500 posts was slowing down loading times for everyone. (I think - disclaimer: I am not a Tech. But that's my understanding)

Huitre · 11/12/2013 09:41

The thing is, if they could make the 500 post pages actually functional, nobody would really mind that much - it's the loss of being able to go to the new posts immediately rather than click and click again and scroll etc that's annoying. So maybe they should wait until the page function works properly before making us use it?

Also, how much actual data is contained in 1000 posts? It can't really be that much and I bet the actual text isn't the largest part of it. It's probably the massive giant banners and adverts that are the biggest bandwidth stealers!! Grin

Huitre · 11/12/2013 09:43

Sorry, Rowan, cross-post.

Actually, I am using Classic but I can no longer click on the most recent unread post eg when I am in Threads I'm On or something. I saw someone elsewhere saying that bookmarking wasn't working for second pages.

SootikinAndSweep · 11/12/2013 09:43

I have that issue too, on my Threads I'm On page I can click on the name of the most recent poster, and instead of being taken to that post I'm taken to the start of page 1 of the thread.

I can cope with the pages abomination if I can go back to the most recent post I've read.

OK - apols for stupidity on our part - could you explain exactly what's not working?

Are bookmarks not working?

Obviously (well, maybe not obviously) we didn't intend this change to mean that people would have to spend ages finding the most recent post

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 09:45

Aha, thanks for info

If you could keep outlining exactly which bits have stopped being functional we'll get Tech to have a look ASAP

bruffin · 11/12/2013 09:49

agree with Huitre. It takes a lot longer to wait for the 500 posts to load then press the next page, wait for those to load, then have to scroll to the bottom of the screen on my phone, than waiting for the 1000 to go straight to the bottom.

sorry cross posted

Bookmarks do appear to be working but i dont use them much as i find them annoying.

custardo · 11/12/2013 09:52

yes yes - I just had to 'go to next page' tis not on

Huitre · 11/12/2013 09:54

Hi there. Just for you, I have tested bookmarks and they do work, so that is a partial solution. However, I do find the look of Mumsnet New a bit irritating. I will probably use it for the time being until Tech can fix the other issue.

What Sootikin said ("on my Threads I'm On page I can click on the name of the most recent poster, and instead of being taken to that post I'm taken to the start of page 1 of the thread") is exactly the issue I have too. If you could fix that, I could live with the pages.

Having said that, I still prefer everything on one page - on a long thread, it means you can scroll up and down more easily and it's nice to be able to do a Ctrl F for the OP's name and skip to their posts if it's something where you want to know what actually happened. 1000 posts really isn't that much, you know. Another site I use allows people to see 1000 posts at a time but some of the actual threads are 20,000 posts long! It doesn't seem to impede functionality at all (obviously the poster numbers are smaller than here, but then the infrastructure is also less advanced, at least I assume so).

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 09:54

Yup sure

I guess we need some way of distinguishing between people who've opened a thread before (and thus probably want the most recent post) and people who've not opened a thread before (and thus probably want to start with the oldest posts)

TEEEEECCHHHHH!

Bookmarks are great! But the look of Mumsnet New is quite annoying. I would like to be able to click on a poster name in the list of Threads I'm Watching and be taken to that post in that thread, not to the top of page 1.

custardo · 11/12/2013 09:57

ooh, must investigate bookmarks further

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 09:58

Thanks huitre

OK - for everyone being frustrated by this - could you switch on and use bookmarks for now, if you haven't already? While we try to see what can be done about it.

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 11/12/2013 10:02

Okay now I'm getting pages.

I hate it.

And I use bookmarks.

What I really hate about pages is the repeating of the OP in each page. It's confusing and pointless.

And I've never had the site load slow specifically on a long thread.

Mckayz · 11/12/2013 10:02

Where are the bookmarks?

I am finding it really annoying not to be able to go to the post when I click on the posters name on Threads I'm On.

bruffin · 11/12/2013 10:03

They make the page bounce about. My phone keeps insisting on going back to the book mark. It is a while since i have used them, so may try again.

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 11/12/2013 10:03

Oh but what I really hate? When HQ changes shit with no warning.

Mckayz · 11/12/2013 10:04

Yes God!! Why not tell us you were going to do this? I had no idea what on earth bookmarks are until this thread.

Why not just leave it be?
