I HATE pages.

Please give them back!

Alt + print screen

evilgiraffe · 17/12/2013 22:48

Exit - press the home and power buttons simultaneously to take a screenshot on an ipad.

Sorry, Tech, I have no intention of sharing screenshots with you. Good luck anyway, though :)

ExitPursuedByAChristmasGrinch · 17/12/2013 22:48

Can I do that on my iphone?

Sorry

Jux · 18/12/2013 08:11

Idea, Exit. Google it. I googled "iPad how to take a screenshot".

Jux · 18/12/2013 08:12

That was, of course, No idea aaaargh!

evilgiraffe · 18/12/2013 08:19

Yes, exit, it's the same on an iphone. When trying it the first time I asked a friend and she told me how to do it on an iphone; I tried it on my ipad and ta-da it works the same way on both Grin

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 18/12/2013 08:25

I had a similar problem on my Kindle yesterday, using Silk, which has been much improved over the last few months and MN doesn't usually hate it, only I was trying to hide a long thread after it had finished and I was in a never ending loop of:

Open thread.
Thread opens to bookmark
I click 'Top'
It would go to the top of the page for about a second then
Back to bookmarked post
And repeat.

I finally managed to stop the bookmark loading by hitting the 'stop loading' x and the thread finally hid.

After about 5 tries.

Yes. Pages is much better. Hmm

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/12/2013 12:20

I've sent screenshot.

Jux · 18/12/2013 16:22

Have you done something? Something different has just happened though it started off the same.

This time when I re-opened Safari it had 3 tabs (live tab being TIO) as per the closed session but it just crashed immediately. I opened it again, and this time only two tabs (had been 3) were there, TIO was missing. It's going in the right direction Grin

Jux · 20/12/2013 17:52

I'm really sorry Tech, but it is still happening. Not so often, but it's still really really annoying.

I have mince pies if you need sustenance.

BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability · 20/12/2013 19:29

My safari has always crashed randomly, I just assumed it was their problem? I do spend about 90% of my time online on here though, so not saying it isnt a mn problem, just that it hadnt occurred to me

Huitre · 20/12/2013 20:27

Without wishing to be rude, this site crashes way more than every other board I frequent. I don't think it's limited to Safari or indeed iPads.

If I were MNHQ, I'd think about a proper rewrite of the entire board software from the ground up. There's no reason it would have to look different but there must be a way of doing things that doesn't result in random outages for lots of people lots of the time.

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/12/2013 20:54

Still. Driving. Me. Mad.

Fortunately, most of the threads I frequent are fairly unpopular and therefore shortish Grin.

There are a lot of crashes, though. I think the last week has surely shown that the pages thing hasn't helped much. Maybe those who actually get to load a page load it faster, but there haven't been fewer complete outages from what I've observed. Those are way worse than the slow loading times!

Yes, I can't see how it can't be the pictures, really. Even tiny pictures are so much more data than lines and lines and lines of text. If the servers are struggling, it's nuts to be allowing people to post pictures (given that they clearly can't afford to upgrade the server provision). And the SODDING GIANT banner with the gurning baby and woman with grey bump. Surely that has an impact.

To my shame, I posted a picture the other day. I was a little bit tipsy and I thought, well, let's try it. But it's interesting. Actually, not being able to post a picture makes you work harder to make your post funny/interesting/descriptive. The post I posted with a picture was really extremely dull because the picture had done the talking for me.

It is crap at the moment. It keeps freezing and often you can't navigate away from a page without clicking on Active Topics.

Pictures are pointless. They add nothing to the site apart from making it fall over more often.

Huitre · 20/12/2013 22:16

Yeah, the banner is ridiculous. It's really badly thought out. The size is excessive, the place it's in makes it highly likely that you'll see one or other of the drop-downs every time you refresh a page or open a new one and the massive pictures, none of which are anything I want to see on a daily basis, are just plain irritating.

Jux · 20/12/2013 23:08

I like the emoticons though Grin

Will I need a hard hat and popcorn when Tech comes back?

Huitre · 23/12/2013 20:46

Hello, MNHQ, just tried to go direct to the second page of a thread and it appears it isn't working again (Mumsnet Classic, desktop, Chrome, Windows 8).

NetworkGuy · 23/12/2013 21:04

"and about the recent introduction of notification emails on Threads I'm Watching). "

Oh, news to me. I guess it's because I've not been lurking very much.

I'd really like to subscribe for such REAL news to come via e-mail and not (necessarily) see anything about all the other things (funny hilarious/ funny peculiar threads) that make it into the newsletter.

Or is there an option to get MNHQ "News about the Site" that I don't know about, please ?

NetworkGuy · 23/12/2013 21:05

Can see this one will hit 500 items soon... so I might see what the fuss is about... certainly can be annoying to have a really long thread broken into pages, esp if one is hunting past comments for an important link, etc, and not realise it's on the 'other' page.

Jux · 23/12/2013 21:35

It's still getting stuck, freezing and crashing. Not as often, so whatever Tech has done has helped. Not quite solved yet.
