WHY have you got rid of All On One Page?

I HATE pages.

Please give them back!

I'm struggling too.

Regarding thread limits: 500 posts isn't an issue for quiche threads as they run into multiples anyway, and Tech has already said that 99.5% of threads are less than 500 posts, so why on earth would limiting to 500 be an issue? It wouldn't be a "fundamental move that could change the way discussions pan out" seeing as most of them are already running within those limits. It would just make life easier for the one-page viewers, with very little impact otherwise. Except for keeping your servers happy. Everybody wins.

I'm using iPad and Safari.

I can't search a thread properly when it's in pages. This is partly an iPad thing, but it wasn't a problem when you could get a whole thread on one page.

Now I have to go through the godawful search rigmarole for every single page on a thread. I've set prefs to 500 now, so there's unlikely to be more than 2 pages (sometimes a thread overruns 1000 by a few posts, so what happens then, btw?), but having to go through that 'find' process more than once is just too horrible.

I suppose it would be far too complicated to write a script which detects the 'find' function and then makes a thread one page? No, I know it's not a small thing really, and fairly hopeless.

I do hate pages. Sad

MrPoppy · 14/12/2013 20:18

I'm also finding it's pesky if you want to click to go back a page (have to click 'back' let page 1 load again, then click 'back' again)

BoreOfWhabylon · 14/12/2013 22:38

And if you have finally got to page 2 and then refresh it takes you back to page 1 again!

Hate hate hate it.

We're looking at the refresh thing - hopefully we'll be able to fix that soon

Again, iPad/Safari freezes on longer threads now (didn't before). Tried to open this from TIO. It loaded 4 posts and then sat there. I scrolled until the grey blob got to the bottom - blank, this is normal, but it used to load the end of the thread after a short while - so I waited. Then I put on the kettle, 10:17. I watched the time click over until 10:19 and went to the loo. Came back and made tea. Sat down. 10:21 I teied to close the tab. Safari frozen. Closed it. Re-opened it. Stuck. Closed it and did other stuff until now. Now it's OK.

Boring to read all that, isn't it? More boring for me. This is happening repeatedly, every day.

Whatever has been tinkered with may have helped some people. It has turned MN to crap for others.

(ooh double quote) We've had a look into this BoW, and we can't seem to replicate it. Can we ask which browser you're using?

Is anyone else having problems with it taking you back to page one?

ExitPursuedByAChristmasGrinch · 16/12/2013 13:35

Yep - it does it to me as well on the ipad. Haven't tried on my laptop yet/

evilgiraffe · 16/12/2013 14:06

Yep, MN is freezing safari on my iPad too, grrr.

RowanMumsnet · 16/12/2013 17:11

Hello

It's starting to look as though there's a correlation between page freezing/very slow loading and iPads. Is anyone having problems who isn't on an iPad?

I can't drink any more after last week

More questions from the Shed of Tech:

  • Has anyone noticed whether this happens particularly when using either wifi or 3G?
  • Can you copy/paste the URL that's making your device freeze and paste it up here or send it to us at [email protected] (with the subject line 'page freezing')?
  • Can you let us know whether you're on the desktop or mobile site?

Thanks

Jux · 16/12/2013 17:43

It has taken me 20+minutes to get this up. I opened MN - TIO. From there I opened 6 threads in new tabs, this thread being the last (and I usually open the max number of tabs so was being circumspect). I closed the tab for TIO and waited for this thread to finish loading. It didn't. Scrolled down as above (blank screen right down to the bottom), waited a bit more, then found it had frozen again. Closed Safari. Played a couple of rounds of some stupid game.

Opened Safari, which automatically brings up the last session so all the tabs were there. Tried to close TIO, but Safari had frozen immediately. Closed Safari. Played another couple of rounds of said stupid game.

Opened Safari. All tabs there. Closed TIO. Froze while loading this thread. Closed Safari. Played stupid game.

Opened Safari. All tabs there. Closed TIO. Finally got here.

Jux · 16/12/2013 17:44

Please. This is almost unusable as it is.

bruffin · 16/12/2013 17:47

I did start a thread in saturday about this because i was told on this thread it must be my phone.
Problem is on mobile site. Doesnt seem to make a difference between wifi or 3g.
Using android 4.1.2 but seems ok on ds phone using 4.2.2.
Phone locks trying to get to next page. Although does take longer to load on most long threads now. Also takes ages to post

Page locked up trying to post this and had to go on app to actually post this.

Jux · 16/12/2013 17:48

There is no particular URL. This afternoon it was TIO and this thread. Yesterday it was some other thread. The day before it was something else again. It will be different every time unless you get stuck in a loop like I have just been. Now it seems to be Ok, but it might not.

I don't have 3G, so this is WiFi. iPad/Safari/desktop.

evilgiraffe · 16/12/2013 18:31

No particular thread, Rowan. I don't use 3G, wifi only iPad and safari. The more threads I open the worse it is, so I'm only opening one at a time. I hate the mobile site, so use the desktop version. Page loading time is actually fine, but freezing happens without warning, sometimes during loading and sometimes when I'm halfway through reading a thread.

BoreOfWhabylon · 16/12/2013 18:59

Kate & Rowan I'm using iPad Safari and desktop site on WiFi. The refresh thing I haven't tried to replicate today as am just fed up with it all.

The freezing is happening A LOT and can't copy link as is frozen! It then either throws me out or I have to just exit Safari and try again.

Also getting lots of v slow loading and intermittently MN won't open at all - get the 'page not available' message.

It's not really usable any more Sad

BoreOfWhabylon · 16/12/2013 19:03

YY am having same experiences as Jux and evilgiraffe

Jux · 17/12/2013 17:22

I've been having similar problems today - not all the time, but this morning I gave up, and this afternoon I couldn't load TIO properly; it got halfway and then just sat there gazing at me mournfully, with a thread title (3rd or 4th on the page) and then acres of blank space. I tried scrolling and it would scroll a bit then get stuck and sit there like a little sick thing pushed beyond endurance. I almost felt like that myself Grin

ShamTech · 17/12/2013 17:29

If you're having trouble on your ipad, could you please go to Settings, then your Wifi and tap on the far right of the wifi network you're connected to (it's a little arrow symbol or the 'i' symbol). Then you'll be on a page that looks like below. Please send us a screenshot of that to [email protected]. Thank you.
