WHY have you got rid of All On One Page?

Pascha · 10/12/2013 20:18

I HATE pages.

Please give them back!

SconeForAStroll in the vast majority when a thread is shared on the internet it is the 'all-in-one' link that is shared. So actually most random punters coming off the net end up on the all-in-one page.

BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability · 12/12/2013 15:36

"When a thread becomes really popular...shared...higher than normal traffic"

Ah, so its that damn beakers fault...

BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability · 12/12/2013 15:38

Can you not set it so unregistered users automatically do see the 100/page even if the 1000/page is shared?

BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability clearly that was an exceptionally popular one that gave Tech a run for it's money, but it's by no means the only one. We have traffic spikes on a daily basis and we have to deal with them and make sure they cause the least amount of disruption to the site and its users.

BackOnlyBriefly · 12/12/2013 15:47

Regardless of what else you do you will want to redirect those not logged in to the standard layout. You don't want links to a 500 post thread either. Not when you can show them the minimum.

SconeForAStroll · 12/12/2013 15:52

beyond and deck exactly. Make all shared threads only 100/page - thus normal users like us can still have all on one page.

I think rather than a work around it needs to be thought out from a regular users POV. It seems another instance where random viewers are accorded more courtesy than all day campers regs.

ShamTech · 12/12/2013 15:54

BackOnlyBriefly there are other reasons which make it detrimental for us to redirect not logged in users to the standard layout. We don't take decisions like this lightly.

SconeForAStroll · 12/12/2013 15:55

Go on then Sham, share it with us. Some of us not me are remarkably techy, we might have an idea that helps.

Problem shared and all that.

Well hang on, surely the all-on-one link will still be shared. Because that's the link that comes up automatically if there is a post number hashtag.

If you access a thread from your own thread's I'm on or a bookmark you created before, then it comes up as a post number hashtag link. This then translates (when posted elsewhere) as an all-on-one-page link, whether the user uses pages or not.

Surely it would be better to change the software so that links either don't honour the hashtag coding (which most people don't notice and hence don't intend to post at all) or so that the link redirects to standard logged-out layout (20 posts per page) AND respects the hashtag post position.

SconeForAStroll · 12/12/2013 16:06

Been here donkeys meself (er, 2008 I think?) I know the green fields thing is a cliche, but it has changed. So rarely see a member of HQ on a thread just for a laugh anymore. :(

See - I just posted on this thread and then immediately afterwards decided to share it. So I copy and paste it in here which includes my "msgid=####". If you click the link, it will take you to this thread, on one page, and my post in particular.

SconeForAStroll · 12/12/2013 16:07

There we go - knew someone would know what they were talking about be around with an idea. Sounds good Bertie. And yes. Bow ties are cool. Tardis

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 12/12/2013 16:10

Oh! Huh. Well, that's changed. It goes to page 4 for me. I view 100 posts per page. So this doesn't really affect me, but I know lots of folks aren't keen.

People who like one page - the button for "Show all messages" seems to work.

I am a bit baffled that if you've apparently fixed the coding to allow links with message ID numbers to respect pages why you have to disallow the option for individual logged in members.

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 12/12/2013 16:11

Oh, the shame. Blush Threads I'm On, of course. I do know how to use an apostrophe.

SconeForAStroll · 12/12/2013 16:14

Just followed your link Bertie and it took me to the op of that thread.

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 12/12/2013 16:16

The thread is this thread?

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 12/12/2013 16:16

I'll see if I can find an older link, I've done it accidentally before.

SconeForAStroll · 12/12/2013 16:22

Def pascha's op - this thread, not you unless you have namechanged

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 12/12/2013 16:23

No not me. Hmm, maybe they have changed that as well then.

Huitre · 12/12/2013 17:22

Yup, took me to the OP, too.

Surely it would be better to change the software so that links either don't honour the hashtag coding (which most people don't notice and hence don't intend to post at all) or so that the link redirects to standard logged-out layout (20 posts per page) AND respects the hashtag post position.

The second of these options seems very sensible indeed to me.

Interressant, let's see where this takes us, should be huitre's post...
