WHY have you got rid of All On One Page?

I HATE pages.

Please give them back!

OP posts:
MrPoppy · 13/12/2013 14:31

I'm struggling to see how it's quicker to load two pages than one.

MrsCakesPremonition · 13/12/2013 14:35

The worst bit is not being able to use my browser search to find things on a thread that is split over pages.

I use it all the time. And now I can't without hopping backwards and forwards.

MrPoppy · 13/12/2013 14:38

I use that too.

bruffin · 13/12/2013 14:38

Well its now 14.38 and still cant get onto second page.

bruffin · 13/12/2013 14:39

I use the find on a page a lot as well.

@MrPoppy

It's quicker if one of the pages takes ages to load because it's so long. We see the aggregate numbers so we can tell how it effects the majority. Obviously individuals can have individual issues but it doesn't mean it's the same for everyone.
Looking at the situation for all the move to two pages makes logical sense. You won't find many sites that don't paginate and those that allow show all don't tend to have threads that reach 1000 posts. Because of our size, we do. The reason for the change in entirely to help with site loading speed - a slow site is one of the most annoying things about any website, Mumsnet included.

Yes MrsCakes that is a disadvantage of this move to improve site speed - you will sometimes have to make an extra click to search on those small proportion of MN threads that run into two pages. Sorry about that. All I'd say is that on a great deal of sites which paginate after 10-20 posts you'd be clicking a lot more than that.

JustineMumsnet · 13/12/2013 14:50

@bruffin

Sorry you're having problems bruffin but don't think it's a site problem - if it was we'd have heard from a lot more users about it.

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 13/12/2013 14:51

The site keeps timing out for me as well, not all the time but every now and again. It will be down for about 5-10 minutes.

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 13/12/2013 14:53

And on the search issue - most sites with smaller pages do actually have a function to search within a particular thread which the advanced search here doesn't (in fact, the advanced search desperately needs updating as the site has grown so much - even just the option to sort results by date could help.)

SconeForAStroll · 13/12/2013 14:54

But I don't go in those other forums Justine. Just this one.

Oh and MN was awfully slow last night. Wouldn't load at all, and that was after all this stuff.

It seems that this is a fix that has made nothing better for the users, because the load time on your stats don't tally with the experience I am receiving.

Xmas Sad
bruffin · 13/12/2013 15:14

The only problem i have loading anything on phone is a second page on mumsnet if I dont have a book mark. I have just loaded a bookmarked thread straight onto second page, have managed to get back to the first page but now cant get back to the second page.
I never had a problem until this 500 page thing came in. My mobile is loading everything else ok from other sites.
The app works ok and that is still loading posts of more than 500 on one page, but as i said there are lots of things wrong with the ap ie my posts and OP cant be customized.

From what Scone says its no just me

BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability · 13/12/2013 15:29

Mine is timing out, but its hardly a new issue so didnt start a thread about it.

If the 500/page thing is un-negotiable, what about maryz suggestion of making all threads 500/posts max?

But you are but one user Scone!

SconeForAStroll · 13/12/2013 15:45

Well that's me told.

Did you mean to be so patronising?

I think that would be a very fundamental change that could have quite profound consequences tbh. I'm not against it per se, but I do think it's a big step. Have observed over the years that a 1000-thread post has a natural cycle to it and usually (not always) even a contentious issue reaches a natural end after 1000 posts. Or maybe people have simply had enough after a 1000 posts. Often it means threads which have become rather entrenched or unpleasant come to a natural halt and folks can move on. I'm not sure this could happen in 500 posts - it might but it might not be enough and I wonder if as many people would be against it as for it...

JustineMumsnet · 13/12/2013 15:46

No. I don't think I was patronising tbh.

There are two of us Scone Grin

@Maryz

I can't access the threads I want on my phone at all atm. And my iPad isn't much better.

I have to load page 1, wait for ages, until the "next" button appears and then wait for ages more.

I don't believe it's just a few of us experiencing this. And Deck's Thread in Chat seems to back up the fact that there are an awful lot of us pissed off.

However, I presume from the posts on this thread (and your answer to Scone in particular) that you aren't going to believe that this is a problem for many users, and therefore aren't going to change it back.

So at least give us the choice of 500 post threads (on one page) vs 1,000 post threads (on two).

I'm sorry you're having problems Maryz - there are tonnes of reasons why that could be but as far as we can tell - and we can only go on what folks tell us but they are not usually shy in informing us if the site isn't working - this is not a general problem.

We agree 1000 posts on one page is ideal for some (myself included tbh) but I don't agree that it's preferable to a speedy site, so we think one extra click is a fair compromise.

As said, I think going to 500 post threads is a much more fundamental move that could actually change the way discussions pan out. We'd be more than happy to consider it but think we'd need to consult and let everyone have a say and it might be better to leave it a little while just to see how things settle down. We'll start a thread on it after Christmas if that's ok?

BackOnlyBriefly · 13/12/2013 16:51

A 500 post limit would solve the problem caused by the err 500 per page limit, but it probably would be too short for some threads.

I still believe it would be possible to let people have the choice, but make shared links go to the standard paged view. Depending on the internal structure it could be simple or difficult, but I'm sure it could be done and this would also be better for bandwidth than sharing 500 post pages.

bruffin · 13/12/2013 16:54

As you have been now told by several people the 1 extra click isnt working

BitOfFunWithSanta · 13/12/2013 17:12

I'm finding it to be much as Maryz describes, Justine, on iPhone and iPad.

Can I suggest that those that are having problems with more than one page start a new thread? As I think it's getting buried in this one and if there was a thread with the title 'Can't get to the second page' more people would come forward saying 'yes, me too.'

Justine: the site may be showing faster on Google. I am not personally experiencing any speed change at all. So I can only think the increase in speed is negligible.

But you have spoken. It's your site.
