Do you want to run a Mumsnet Local site?

EmmaMumsnet · 04/09/2013 11:19

Do you need a new packet of biscuits project to perk up Autumn and beyond?

Mumsnet Local is expanding all the time and we are looking for new Local Editors. Our current team of brilliant and dedicated Local Editors make sure their site is full of relevant listings, encouraging local Mumsnetters and businesses to post listings and reviews on the site and filling the gaps, so it's a useful community hub for local parents.

They also oversee Local Ambassadors, who are busy organising meet-ups all over the country, as well as encouraging community links locally. What Local Editors can't do is see anyone's private Mumsnet membership details or posting history (sorry, only the Community team are allowed in there).

We don't expect Local Editors to do all this for free; Local Editors get revenue from Local advertising and offers.

We know we're not quite there with Local yet, but we're moving along, and we're on the brink of launching some whizzy new stuff that Tech's been putting together in a bunker all summer.

We've pasted a list of the sites needing Local Editors below so if you're interested in finding out more please email [email protected] with 'interested in becoming a Local Editor' in the subject field.

Some of the sites are still a bit empty, so take a look around Kent to see what a site looks like when it's populated with meet-ups, listings, Local Talk, Offers, etc:

Ideally you would have had some experience in a media, advertising sales or organisational role and be able to spell, but bags of enthusiasm and strong community links can go a long way to making a local site a success.

So how much money do Local Ambassadors realistically make? And how many hours do you need to put in. All the info seems very vague!

Thanks LEDundeeAngusFife (my husband grew up in Wormit and went to St A). I agree about the London centric thing. I am really fed up of threads questioning people saying their child is at school when they can't possibly be at school, it is still late August etc etc. I am too busy to run one of these sites anyway but would welcome being involved if there is a Scotland section on the site or any developments.

UnhappyHammy- that's a fair question and this is my answer:

I think the info is vague because it varies from Editor to Editor. It's really hard to quantify. I have been doing this since May and made nothing at all. (So far at least). One Editor has made a thousand pounds.

However, I am really enjoying it, and I've definitely got every faith that this is the start of a big snowball. It depends on area too. I'm out in the sticks a bit so have to do a bit more on brand recognition and really get the name out there on Twitter and FB.

This is no get rich quick scheme, but it's great to have the experience on your CV, it's genuinely satisfying and a very good way of networking in your area. It's also flexible. You can do your stuff around jobs and kids.

There's no single definite answer about time and money, which is why it comes across as vague. It's very early stages. Remember though- Mumsnet took years to take off, but it's in a great place now. Local is still very young by comparison.

Oh sorry unhappyHammy- Ambassadors don't make anything, but Editors can. My answer was directed as though you'd asked about editors, not Ambassadors.

Ambassadors can hopefully get perks and discounts arranged by their Local Ed as a reward for helping to arrange Meet Ups.

Know this is off topic but does anyone know how to change your local username? Thought I might as well ask where all the local Eds seem to be hanging out Smile

While I was looking, I came across this webpage. MNHQ does it need updating? Smile

i was confused over names. volunteered to do one thing a while back and did it for a while but not much response or activity then saw this and hadn't realised that in the interim they'd created new 'roles' with potential revenue streams.

i guess my point was that it would be nice to be kept informed. if there are local editors making money surely us ambassadors and tsarinas aren't needed anymore?

Any reply to offers upthread? as I said, think theres a nailsea site but I cant relate to that a great deal as that is furthest north somerset you can go, almost on the border of somerset so a more central somerset site would be better, Im slap bang in the middle of somerset so well placed!

I'm doing Suffollk if that's what you were referring to Give. Will be an interesting challenge and have suggested a few ideas to MN re linking into the 'This Is My Child' on a local level.

I've emails about a few things after being appointed West Susse editor but no reply for a week, I'm keen to get started! :)

I heard back from Emma saying she'd move my suggestion upwards but I guess now they're well absorbed w/ the details of getting everything set up.

I imagine it is actually a fairly major job as they indicated setting up training days and it makes no sense to do that until as many are in post as possible.

If you have been offered an editorship did you have to give further details etc after initial email? When did you hear? Has anyone been given Shropshire to look after? Thanks.

I didn't even get an email back with more info! I hope my area gets a good editor as we are lacking in my area with that kind of local info!
