Do you want to run a Mumsnet Local site?

Do you need a new packet of biscuits project to perk up Autumn and beyond?

Mumsnet Local is expanding all the time and we are looking for new Local Editors. Our current team of brilliant and dedicated Local Editors make sure their site is full of relevant listings, encouraging local Mumsnetters and businesses to post listings and reviews on the site and filling the gaps, so it's a useful community hub for local parents.

They also oversee Local Ambassadors, who are busy organising meet-ups all over the country, as well as encouraging community links locally. What Local Editors can't do is see anyone's private Mumsnet membership details or posting history (sorry, only the Community team are allowed in there).

We don't expect Local Editors to do all this for free; Local Editors get revenue from Local advertising and offers.

We know we're not quite there with Local yet, but we're moving along, and we're on the brink of launching some whizzy new stuff that Tech's been putting together in a bunker all summer.

We've pasted a list of the sites needing Local Editors below so if you're interested in finding out more please email [email protected] with 'interested in becoming a Local Editor' in the subject field.

Some of the sites are still a bit empty, so take a look around Kent to see what a site looks like when it's populated with meet-ups, listings, Local Talk, Offers, etc:

Ideally you would have had some experience in a media, advertising sales or organisational role and be able to spell, but bags of enthusiasm and strong community links can go a long way to making a local site a success.

Oh Tee, that Active Convos thing will make such a difference. I honestly think it will revolutionise Local - my area is packed with MNers I know, but the Local chat is really slow.

That's how it used to be Lulu but we lost it with the site upgrade.

I know it's on what we call Listzilla, but how far down it is? That I don't know!

trouble is that you volunteer, you put up a few posts, you get no interest from posters and mumsnet ignores you once you've signed up and that's that. then they advertise that they need someone for your area rather than get in touch with you.

it's all a bit bizarre. like yes i'll do it, great go for your life, no demand, err let's pretend that person doesn't exist and advertise for someone else.

Swallowed what on earth are you talking about?!?! Is this recently? Because the LEs, I assure you, are not ignored by HQ in any way shape or form.

Maybe get back in touch with MNHQ then, cause perhaps they lost your mail volunteering. There has been a lot of contact since we officially signed up as LEs. Weekly updates, and lots of mails inbetween. Or do you mean as Local Ambassador?

The LAs are assigned to the LEs, so you need to chat to your LE if there is nothing doing.

So what you are taking about is being a Tsarina, not a Local Editor.

Just so we're clear.

I'm hesitating slightly before taking the plunge with this....can Tee, or any other local editors give an idea of how much work they put into this per week - and, if it's not too sensitive a question - how much you can actually make in advertising revenue? I'd love to go ahead and do this, but have other job possibilities as well....

LEDundeeAngusFife · 07/09/2013 11:28

Joey
if you are looking for a job, then I would say it is the same as any other freelance job. You get more out of it, the more you put in.

I'd say a minimum of a couple of hours a week, but you won't make much money. That will just keep it ticking over. It is quite time intensive at first, but once it is up and running, it doesn't take lots of work.

You do have to get out there and approach businesses to sell ads, and that takes a bit of time and networking.

Disagree about Highlands and Islands....totally. This seems to be an area including Orkney, Shetland, Skye, Inner and Outer Hebrides, the Highlands (Caithness, Sutherland, Inverness, Cairngorms, Spey side, Lochaber etc. Huge. I am in Lochaber and would have something in common with many of the mainland places, even Skye, but Shetland is a different world, as are Lewis, Harris, Uists etc. I just don't like the way we are all lumped together like also rans.

Rant over. LadyBeagleEyes is from around these parts....what does she think?

I think the issue is that there is limited potential for advertising in more remote areas, and it is the advertising revenue that makes people want to be an LE. I see your point, but I don't know how else it could be done, from a practical POV.

I also don't think that the MN Local thing works so well in more rural and insular communities. The whole point is to connect local mums, and local businesses. If you go up to eg Badachro, everyone knows everyone anyway!

Don't worry though - we Scottish LEs have been whingeing about the London-centric stuff, such as the fuss made of half-term, and the differences in school holidays. We will be able to change that in the future, so we are not advertising school hols when our schools are almost going back!
