Ok, that's enough now MNHQ

Stop it with the mad deleting.

OP posts:
rhondajean · 29/05/2012 20:06

Surely " you are making yourself look bigoted" is less confrontational than " your views are bigoted" as it's merely implying that the person may want to think again about how they expressed themselves rather than saying all out what they said was bigoted?

But I am running a temperature tonight.

tethersend · 29/05/2012 20:07

I've never been called 'too subtle' before, LeMarchand... should I be pleased? Or angry?

I'm confused and frightened.

So cold...

So cold...

Pinot · 29/05/2012 20:07

ooh what norty person put the luffly HQers on The List?
tsk tsk :o (i agree though)

CoteDAzur · 29/05/2012 20:07

""you are making yourself look very bigoted" and "You really don't sound nice on this thread" if you'd said, say, "I think your opinions are bigoted/not very nice", your posts would have been fine. It is a very fine line and we can be very pedantic about this."

So if I say "You sound like a control freak" or "You really don't sound like you believe in freedom of thought or expression", I would be deleted.

But if I say "I think this new style of moderation in MN has a whiff of control freakery and a distaste for freedom of thought or expression" I should be fine, right?

So, basically, we can type anything we want and it purely depends on who's on duty, what mood they're in and how they choose to 'interpret' our posts?

I've not read that part of the guidelines.

When did doublethink become so prevalent at HQ, anyhow?

@Maryz

So, to be clear:

We ARE allowed to say a post is racist.

Are we allowed to say an opinion is racist - because I was deleted for saying "opinions like that are bigoted" Confused

I don't think that the instructions are clear enough.

Basically, are we allowed to disagree with the op - or can an op get everyone who disagrees with her deleted?

Yes, yes of course you can disagree - it's Mumsnet!

Ultimately, though, it's a futile exercise trying to pin down exactly what form of words is and isn't allowed because, as has been noted here several times, context is very important.

I think it's worth thinking about whether we all accept the core MN ideals - ie freedom of speech, polite and reasonable discourse, all posters treated the same, no trollhunting, no breaking the law etc etc - if you don't then that's clearly going to be a problem on the deletion front. If you do then there is a question of whether our talk guidelines are the best way to achieve them (and if not then what would work better) and if they are then are we implementing them consistently/sensibly...

ShirleyKnot · 29/05/2012 20:14

I'm sorry to go on and be a massive wanker about this but I'd would very much like a response to my point about threads being started to attack regulars being allowed to stand.

Does MNHQ think it's ok for me to be called stupid and cliquey and as if Mumsnet is "all about me?", mean and bullying, a person of a certain "ilk"?

Is that all ok because the poster(s) don't use my name? Even thought they made it, and make it, very clear who they're talking about, in the most recent case going so far as to say the topic of conversation we were having.

It goes both ways doesn't it? If there are going to be deletions a-plenty for saying "I am reporting this thread" or "this post makes you sound like a racist" then why should any regulars have to put up with being constantly slagged off because we have the temerity to use the site to make friends?

ThatVikRinA22 · 29/05/2012 20:14

are they still at then? i think HQ has a trigger happy newbie.....someone must have a very sore deletion finger....

I have highlighted the portion of your post, Justine, that has been put forth several times with no satisfactory answer appearing.

The offensive post remains visible, while the poster calling the OP on it is deleted. How is that treating everyone fairly?

SuePBlovesaDiamondJubilee · 29/05/2012 20:17

I'd be interested in that too Shirley

Blatherskite · 29/05/2012 20:18

I still don't get why "I'm reporting this thread" posts are being deleted. They attack no-one. Do they?

I'm honestly getting more confused and frustrated the longer this thread goes on.

PARD is always to be desired and sought.

That is not the issue.

The issue is the massive and bizarre increase in deletions of posts that once would not have been deleted.

Somefing has changed. That is the issue.

So, if Hitler pitched up on a thread (bit of a thought experiment, him being dead and everything) and started going all Final Solution on us, I would only be allowed to say "I think your opinions are making you look bigoted".

No problem, there at all. Nope. None. Just dandy.

Pan · 29/05/2012 20:20

I don't think only posts that are reported get deleted - on occassion there has been a sort of sweep where the Grim Reaper of MN harvests a few with the scythe in one big SWISH!!!!
