What you would like to see in MN Local?

We are redesigning Local and want to hear what you think. What would you like to see on there? How could we make it better?

The plans are to make it easier to navigate and make your local talk threads visible when you use the main talk boards. We will also be adding lots more listings. There will be all the existing stuff, toddler groups, afterschool classes etc, but we're thinking of expanding. Would you be more comfortable buying a car from other MNers than from a second hand car dealer, for example?

Let us know all your thoughts on function and content.

Thanks,
MNHQ

@MissKittyMiddleton

You could respond a lot quicker to reports of dodgy listings (the report button was my suggestion btw ).

On average it takes about 2 reports and a week plus a thread in site stuff to get things done. You need more staff manning the local section.

Well that's obviously not good, MissKittyMiddleton, and we apologise. Turns out the local reports were going into a weirdy place. We've now spotted that and fixed it - so, hopefully, they should now be dealt with much more quickly and efficiently.

Instead of having just a list of local mums it would be better if you could write a bit of blurb about yourself and your DCs, their ages and whereabouts you are like on netmums

MissKittyMiddleton · 09/02/2012 12:23

Ah I thought you were just filtering my reports. A special KatieMiddleton spam folder... possibly marked PITA.

The local section in my area is seriously lacking!

I even went over to the dark side to their meet a mum section but didn't find anyone I clicked with (different strokes and all that). Not many MNers in my area, or if they are they don't like to admit it.

I'd like local reviews. Things like days out, attractions, as well as practical stuff like plumbers, handymen, babysitters, that kind of thing. Feedback from local mums would be very helpful.

MissKittyMiddleton · 09/02/2012 12:44

I knew it. And to think I gave you bullet pointed suggestions!

QED · 09/02/2012 12:45

So will you be able to do something about the 12 year events in York? Grin

breatheslowly · 09/02/2012 13:15

I would quite like to be able to separate my local presence on MN from my normal username without the faff of having to name change each time. I value the anonymity of MN when posting about my fanjo sensitive topics and while I would love to meet up with other MNers I would rather that they couldn't delve into all of my MN posts.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 09/02/2012 13:17

Totally agree breathe. Changing your name for local boards is a total faff.

glenthebattleostrich · 09/02/2012 13:43

A meet a mum bit would be great, also a local childcare thread for childminders / nursery's. A nearly new section and a local chat board would also be good.

Yes, if you report them, QED

QED · 09/02/2012 16:50

I have done twice. Will happily do again in case they got stuck in the local events black hole.

MissKittyMiddleton · 09/02/2012 16:53

And QED posted on my latest thread in site stuff about it.

Oh right. Sorry

And please do, QED.

Aw, your bullets were v v good, MissKittyMiddleton. Really.

We've put them in special highlighted red on the spreadsheet

MissKittyMiddleton · 09/02/2012 17:09

:)

aliciaflorrick · 09/02/2012 17:11

I would like an local section for those MNetters who are overseas, France, Belgium and Italy seem to have a large number of posters.

desertgirl · 09/02/2012 19:46

and the UAE has quite a few.... (although we are all evil slave owners or something apparently)

wellbegunishalfdone · 09/02/2012 20:09

As a Tsarina I see many a tumbleweed go past on our Local directory & local board. No-one seems that bothered by it. Have to agree with other posters. I also prefer Netmums for local info. All I could add is that I think mumsnet has too many local directories available. They should be grouped together by county/area instead then maybe have a Tsarina or two per town/city within that. :)

QED · 09/02/2012 20:13

Have reported the (long running) events again so hopefully they won't go into the hole :)

notveryinventive · 09/02/2012 20:14

Whats a Tsarina? Sorry to hijack here, but better than to start a thread. Ive tried to google it, but just got wife of a Tsar.

wellbegunishalfdone · 09/02/2012 20:53

Grin notveryinventive A Mumsnet Tsarina basically looks out for posts on their local board, helps with questions etc. Tsarina's also post local information via the directory. Not quite as flashy as being the wife of a Tsar though teehee.

QED · 09/02/2012 21:19

Thank you - the very long events have gone :)

SuePurblybilt · 09/02/2012 21:30

I would also like a way to post on local without the faff of NC. I'm too outable and too bitchy bout rl people Grin.
It's probably not practical but it would be brilliant.

Don't you have to pay to advertise nearly new atm? I think that's a bit short-sighted tbh, if it were free I think you'd lure more into the local section.
