What you would like to see in MN Local?

We are redesigning Local and want to hear what you think. What would you like to see on there? How could we make it better?

The plans are to make it easier to navigate and make your local talk threads visible when you use the main talk boards. We will also be adding lots more listings. There will be all the existing stuff, toddler groups, afterschool classes etc, but we're thinking of expanding. Would you be more comfortable buying a car from other MNers than from a second hand car dealer, for example?

Let us know all your thoughts on function and content.

Thanks,
MNHQ

@TheJoyfulPuddlejumper

I would love to see a 'meet a local mum' section like Netmums has. I have met so many great people through that, it's the only thing that the huns do better than Mumsnet! As far as I can see, at the moment the only way on MN to find local mums who want to meet new friends is to start a thread.

Hello. We do have have Meet-ups section in Local already (if you go to your Local and look to the right of the Local Directory, you'll see it) but clearly we need to make that more obvious!

@peggyblackett

A 'For Sale' section - would be great to be able to sell baby stuff locally.

There is a Nearly New/For Sale section on all Local pages, peggyblackett. (Again, we obviously need to flag that up more!)

@completenamechange

Also there is a lot of abuse of the local EVENTS section. This is quite a high profile listing as they are displayed when you are in the Talk section. Some groups list courses running for several weeks so they are displayed for ages, which means that individual events (like my Children in Need event last year) didn't get a look in.

Please do report this kind of stuff to us. We'll happily move courses, wrongly listed in Events, to the Listings Directory - where they should be.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and criticisms. All v v useful

Please keep 'em coming...

HelenMumsnet · 09/02/2012 12:19

@MissKittyMiddleton

You could respond a lot quicker to reports of dodgy listings (the report button was my suggestion btw ).

On average it takes about 2 reports and a week plus a thread in site stuff to get things done. You need more staff manning the local section.

Well that's obviously not good, MissKittyMiddleton, and we apologise. Turns out the local reports were going into a weirdy place. We've now spotted that and fixed it - so, hopefully, they should now be dealt with much more quickly and efficiently.

HelenMumsnet · 09/02/2012 12:27

@MissKittyMiddleton

Ah I thought you were just filtering my reports. A special KatieMiddleton spam folder... possibly marked PITA.

@QED

So will you be able to do something about the 12 year events in York? Grin

Yes, if you report them, QED

HelenMumsnet · 09/02/2012 16:54

@QED

I have done twice. Will happily do again in case they got stuck in the local events black hole.

Oh right. Sorry

And please do, QED.

HelenMumsnet · 09/02/2012 16:55

@MissKittyMiddleton

And QED posted on my latest thread in site stuff about it.

[unforgiving]

Aw, your bullets were v v good, MissKittyMiddleton. Really.

We've put them in special highlighted red on the spreadsheet

@migratingsouth

Oops I was trying to be helpful, but on reading it back my (long!) post sounds more like I'm complaining - I really didn't intend to winge at you Helen, honest!

No that's fine, migratingsouth - we did ask for feedback and we can take it!

Completely get what you're saying about Netmums meet-a-mum set up (we've peeked) and about the Meet-ups Topic in Mumsnet Talk.

But there is a separate Local meet-ups doodah on each Local that was set up to put MNers who live locally in touch with each other. It's obviously not doing the job, though, cos no one can see it!

EmmaMumsnet · 17/02/2012 10:00

Thanks so much for all your comments and feedback. There are some really great suggestions here and we'll be keeping a close eye on them while redesigning Local.

Do keep posting local recommendations when you can.
