frothing, I really, really dont know Xmas Sad maybe we should just stick to the "never give more than you can afford" mantra.

and put this whole sorry saga to bed.

although, it will be referred to again next year/time someone posts a "skint" thread.

I do think that if anyone posts on a donations thread advising caution then they should not be rounded on and attacked, though.

theyoungvisiter · 21/12/2011 16:33

TBH the whole idea of cash whip rounds sits really uneasily with me - even for deserving causes. I just think it's wrong that the person who shouts loudest gets most. There are loads of MNers going through tough times but not posting about it.

The board should stick to doing what it does best - offering emotional and practical support, but not financial.

richtea, although we arent supposed to be specifically discussing that situation I totally agree.

IIRC, the redrug stuff was a a poster claiming she was skint series of disasters etc, then posted about a new rug she wanted to buy. this isnt dissimilar imo.

I may be wong though, redrug was before my time.

me too

theyoungvisiter · 21/12/2011 16:44

Also, to clarify, I didn't see the thread last night. My unease has built up over a while and is not about any one specific case.

RichTeaAreCrap · 21/12/2011 16:45

the threads deleted didn't help either I don't think. Why are people not allowed to post their thoughts whether they agree or not? It's only fair that everyone can have an opinion surely.

AgentProvocateur · 21/12/2011 16:47

I spent too long trying to work out what re-drug meant! Blush

higgle · 21/12/2011 16:48

I am a grown up person and if I want to give someone money I will. Having read what is on here (didn't see the original thread) I'll contact people by pm if I want to send them something. I think giving to individuals you feel you can help is a good thing and a couple of times a year I'll give some cash to someone I think needs it if I see them in a supermarket or the street and they seem to be struggling. I much prefer this to all the secret santa nonsense which goes on on here which is just inked to knowing someone who puts your name forward.

ChristmasFuckers · 21/12/2011 16:48

looks like nowdays threads are going ops way or no way

OP posts:
TheFallenMadonna · 21/12/2011 16:48

I missed it all too. And having posts referring to it all obliquely is bloody annoying....

See, thass what I said in my first post oop there. The deletions are feeding the myth.

scottishmummy · 21/12/2011 16:49

someone posted bout being skintight in run up to Xmas, benefits stopped
cue offers of cash by palpal, grocery orders. sent to her, flurry of pm to mn in question. conspicuous giving

few folk queried this, and sums being raised. certainly it was speculated to be high hundreds

melee ensued, threads and discussion of it deleted

AwayinaKayzr · 21/12/2011 16:52

But if she starts a thank you thread is she just going to get rounded on again? Which then gets deleted.

I have donated to a few things on here. OJ, Trinity and to Wiltedrose and TBH I probably would do again.

But as far as I remember these were organised. I certainly remember an online food shop being done for one of them.

I refrained from posting about my XH being made redundent 2 days after DS2 was born and 2 weeks before Xmas. Except to my ante-natal/post-natal friends. I had been here long enough by then to know if I posted in Chat then people might offer money and other forms of help.

How is anyone meant to police it? If MNHQ end up saying don't post about money problems because other posters might give you money then what is the point of MN? I must moan about heartburn something almost everyday.

If anyone has anything they can give me to stop heartburn that isn't gaviscon I will take it Xmas Grin

VajazzleMyFoof · 21/12/2011 16:54

But if she had started a Thankyou thread last night or this morning then maybe all these other threads may not have been started.

I think there is a huge difference between posters organising help for others and a poster starting a thread themselves knowing that the outcome of thread will be that they recieve cash.

theyoungvisiter · 21/12/2011 16:57

I think of course you should be able to post about problems - but you shouldn't be able to post direct requests for financial assistance (yes - it's happened) nor should you be able to post your paypal address for donations, even if people ask for it.

If people want to help via PM or off-board then fine - that's their business. But MN is not some kind of crisis loan/fairy godmother charity.
